Dr. Bulama Bukarti has established himself as one of the most insightful analysts of extremism, governance and social change in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. Through his academic work, policy analysis and media commentary, he has become a leading voice on issues of security, ideology and development across the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, and beyond.
A lawyer and human rights advocate by training, Dr. Bukarti has served as Analyst, Senior Analyst and later Senior Fellow at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in London, where he focused on extremist movements in sub-Saharan Africa. He has provided evidence-based analysis to policymakers, governments, and international organisations, combining scholarly rigour with a deep understanding of the cultural and religious dynamics shaping security and governance in the region. As Vice President for DDR and Deradicalisation at the Bridgeway Foundation, he has overseen the rehabilitation and reintegration of more than 300 former members of the Islamic State’s Central Africa Province.
Dr. Bukarti’s commentaries appear frequently on the BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, and other global media outlets, where he brings clarity and nuance to complex African and international issues related to security. He has written over 50 articles and papers, with his works published in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The Independent, The Telegraph, and African Arguments, among others.
He holds a PhD in Law from SOAS, University of London, where his research explored the ideological justifications of Boko Haram, as well as degrees in Common and Islamic Law from Bayero University, Kano and a masters from the same university. He is a dual-qualified lawyer in Nigeria and in England and Wales.
Dr. Bukarti lectures and advises widely on counter-extremism, religion and politics and human rights, and is recognised for his ability to bridge scholarship, policy, and public discourse with rare insight and authenticity.
