Yoruba Writers Since the Nineteenth Century: Draft List

Dear all:

As we expect the release, in 2016, of both the Encyclopedia of the Yoruba and the Handbook of Yoruba Culture and Customs, we want to embark on the third project on Yoruba Writers Since the Nineteenth Century, to be completed in 2016 for a release date of 2017. We want to compile a comprehensive list before we assign entries to authors.

Using our definition, do please see that we have not omitted any author. This is not a project about “scholars” but “creative” writers. Many contemporary ones would have been omitted, and do please bring their names and work to our attention.

We are grateful.

YORUBA WRITERS SINCE THE 19TH CENTURY

In this project, a “Yoruba writer” will be taken to signify a scholar of Yoruba origin who has committed his/her scholarship, either in English or in Yoruba, to a creative and fictional representation of the Yoruba culture and tradition. Yoruba writers is a list from the nineteenth century to date. Any one on the list must have engaged the Yoruba language and culture in creative manners, specifically in the forms of poetry, prose, short stories, and drama.

Is there not a contradiction, though, between the description of the project as not being "about “scholars” but “creative” writers" and the other decsription of a Yoruba writer as a

I agree with Toyin Adepoju on the status of Soyinka with reference to Yoruba writing. WS has transferred a great deal of Yoruba into the English text. Look at the poem, "Abiku," though written in English was it not simply saying "Abiku so oloogun d'eke," which is a quintessential Yoruba speak? 

Mose Mabayoje's observation about Duro Ladipo and Ogunde should also be looked into. He seems to be right. I know works have been done about these actors, I'm just not sure if they wrote in Yoruba. I believe R. G. Armstrong documented a good number of Duro Ladipo's plays (e.g., Oba Koso) and those of Ogunmola (e.g., Omuti) but neither one of them actually did write those plays.

I am also not sure if Olatunde Olatunji could fall into the group being showcased here. A great scholar he is as  a literary critic and stylistician but I really don't think he did any creative writing. If the likes of Ayo Bamgbose, Sope Oyelaran, O. B. Yai or Oladele Awobuluyi would not make the cut, I believe Olatunde Olatunji shouldn't either.

Yes, Bade Ajuwon, graduate of Indiana University, a folklorist, was a scholar of Yoruba oral tradition, specializing in the theme of the Eremoje - hunters' funeral dirges and wrote a number of books and papers on the subject.  He also worked closely with Professor Wande Abimbola in promoting Ifa practice and scholarship. The last I knew was that he was with the Ifa Institute in Oyo after retiring from OAU as a Professor in African Languages and Literatures. He did not do creative writings, though; and so I'm not sure if he could be considered in the group of Yoruba creative writers.
