Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid to join the Panel Discussion on “Islam in Africa” on April 28, 2024
Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid is the Chief Executive of Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA). The NPA is Ghana’s downstream petroleum regulator. From August 2018 to January 2020, he was the Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development. Prior to becoming the Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid was the Minister for Information and Presidential Spokesperson, a position he occupied from February 2017 until August 2018.
He is an Islamic scholar and Senior Lecturer who, until he was appointed minister in 2017, taught in the Department of Religion & Human Values at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. His areas of research are Political Thought in Islam, Islamic Civilisation in West Africa, and Islam and Gender. Dr. Abdul-Hamid is a seasoned politician and member of the ruling party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has served variously as its National Youth leader and Spokesperson for its Presidential Candidate and now President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, in which President Akufo-Addo secured a second four-year term, he served as Deputy National Campaign Manager in charge of communication.
Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has published widely in reputable journals around the world. His publications include Religious Language and the Charge of Blasphemy: In Defense of Al-Hallaj; Christian-Muslim Relations in Ghana: A Model for World Dialogue and Peace and Was it a Nine-Day Wonder?; A Note on the Proselytisation Efforts of the Nation of Islam in Ghana: 1980-2010.
