Thanks to Dr. Fakinlede for helping to synthesise our suggestions so far.
I would like to suggest that we add one more item to the Mission Statements, and this relates to status and use of the Yoruba language in family life. For those of our brothers and sisters in Diaspora, you may not be aware that an active spirit of linguistic suicide is on the prowl in the Yoruba race and we need to arrest the asituation.
I can almost count on the fingers of my hands those of my friends and relations that proudly speak the Yoruba language to their children, even some of my friends who earn their living in Yoruba studies. I must confess that even I am still struggling with this problem with my children, having brought them back from the UK almost too late
However, I am always delighted when I visit some of my friends who make it a point of duty to speak the language to their children all the time. I was recently in an early morning devotion while visiting a family with another German guest. It was so heart warming when we started the devotion in Yoruba with translation for this german friend. What a profound act of isenilalejo, a wonderful manifestation of the true Yoruba spirit of being a good host. So there is hope.
May I therefore suggest that we add a statement reflecting the need to - Promote the active use of the Yoruba language in everyday family life of Yoruba people worldwide.
