Ori and Cleansing--Rogation (Ori owun Aweda)

Ori Awo we

Awede*, we'leke, Ifa ni yi o we ori ti emi fun mi
Silver-washer, bead-washer, Ifa is that who wash head is mine for me
[With awe'de as sponge, it is Orunmila who will cleanse me thoroughly].

For most people, bodily cleansing is a daily ritual. Some of these people even cleanse their bodies two times in a day: when they get out of bed (in the morning) and before they go to sleep (at night). To some people, the cleansing is not done daily: they cleanse their bodies, perhaps, every other day. They, however, wash their faces daily and, may be, other parts of their bodies alongside the faces. Then, there are few people whose cleansing of their bodies is sporadic. Other than the aroma of sweat that sometimes results from one's daily run-arounds, a stale sweat that has been doused with fragrance, which in turn gives its own poignant aroma, is the silent signature of a sporadic cleanser.

On the spiritual level, there are similar stages of cleansing. The daily spiritual cleansing includes the purity of our thoughts, acts, deeds and conscious connection to Odumare through the positive energies we each believe in. The non-daily cleansing can be categorized as the not-so clean state of the minds in terms of one's acts and deeds. A high pollution of the mind can be compared to the poignant smell that comes from a sporadic, bodily cleanser. Just as the physical body needs to be thoroughly cleansed when it is encased in an unseen mound of dirt that is doused with stale smell, so does the spiritual essence requires thorough cleansing.

Ironically, humans are most times unaware when weighed down by a heavy mound of spiritual dirt. Knowledge about this condition is most times through spiritual consultation with Ifa. At which point, cleansing agents, primary of which is ebo, will be employed. Then, cleansing of the physical head, which is actually symbolic of destiny, will follow. As humans, it is our belief that we are all spiritually cleansed. On that note, may we stay bodily and spiritually cleansed every day and at all time. Ase. A ji ire ni oni o (we wake up with ire today—"Good Morning").
