Good evening,

TLDR: I would like us to spend £192.33, raised by selling the mini lathe.

We have been loaned an older, larger, more capable lathe by Leeds Hackspace, on the same sort of basis I loaned mine. Myself and a few other members have spent the last couple of days cleaning, oiling and generally going over the lathe to check for any problems.
For this reason, we are now getting rid of my old lathe, by selling it to another member. The proceeds are going to the space.

They will be taking the following
Mini Lathe
Drill chuck
12mm 55 degree carbide insert tooling
Vertical slide and vice
3 and 4 jaw chuck Tool post and holders
MT2 dead centre

I now believe we should now buy the following to fit out the new lathe, from Arc Euro Trade:
16mm 80 degree carbide insert tooling - 060-325-11016 060-325-12016 060-325-13016
Inserts for the new tooling (Aluminium and Steel) - 060-326-10936 060-326-31936 060-326-11934 060-326-32934
A keyless drill chuck and arbor - 040-011-00013 040-020-02500
2 backplates - 040-060-11400
MT2 dead, carbide, live and half centre - 030-010-00400 030-010-00700 030-010-01100 030-010-00200
4 jaw chuck - good, 8 inch second hand if possible

The total for this is, by my calculations, £192.33, excluding the new 4 jaw chuck, which I would suggest we buy second hand (a new 8 inch 4 jaw would be very expensive).
If it is agreeable with everyone else, I think the 4 jaw should be a separate purchase, as we will need to work out what size and how much we are willing to spend.
The majority of the cost of this, with the probable exception of the 4 jaw chuck should be covered by our selling the mini-lathe.

The numbers above are Arc part numbers.
I am recommending we get new tooling because the lathe is significantly larger than the old one, and more rigid tooling should help make it easier to use. It would require two types of inserts, but one of those is square, and thus has twice as many cutting tips.
The old chucks are really a bit small for this lathe, and a keyless chuck is much nicer to use, along with the fact that we don't keep losing the key.
The backplates are to fit the current collet chuck and new 4 jaw chuck to the lathe.

We have already had donations of a new quick change tool post, a new nut for the cross-slide, and a few other parts.
I am happy to machine the few replacement parts if they are required, and mostly absorb the cost of materials (they would probably be out of my scrap bin anyway), and Andy has offered the use of his lathe for making repairs into the future.

Thank you
Joseph

Hai,

Firstly, thanks so much for all the work that you and others have put into the stripdown, cleaning and general fettling.

I have no objection to this in principle, on the basis that:

  • The drill chuck, insert tooling, 3-jaw chuck and dead centre are directly being replaced with more suitable and rigid new ones
  • Live, carbide and half-centres are all being added to the inventory

I have a couple of queries:

  • You've included a new live and half-centre; what's happening to the broken live centre and the old half centre, are they going too?
  • Does your purchase suggestion include toolholders to fit the new tool post (how many)?
  • What is happening with parting tools (HSS and/or carbide)
  • What is happening with boring bars
  • You mentioned square inserts with 4 points; which tools would these be for, as you also mentioned 80° tooling?

Cheers

Lissa

Hello,
My intention  was that the old centres go with the mini lathe, as they are somewhat worn, but still usable. The broken live centre may only be useful for bearings and stock though.
We have a few tool holders for the new tool post already, and my thoughts were that they will be sufficient for now, and can be increased as required at another time.
The direct-in-qcth hss tools can go with the lathe, but I suggest we keep the carbide one for now, though it may also want upgrading later. The hss ones probably won't fit the larger tool holders, even if we bought a blade holder.
The 55 degree boring bat can go with the lathe, but we should retain the rest.
I realised the middle tool is actually square, not 80 degrees, unlike the left and right tools. I'm only suggesting we get one spare insert of ferrous and aluminium for it for now, as I don't think it will be as heavily used, and given the number of cutting edges, that should last a while. I have suggested packs of 10 of the 80 degree tools.

Thank you,
Joseph

Hey,

First off, I'll agree with this in principle, but would like to double check that the proposed parts will fit the new lathe.

To answer one of Lissa's questions; we have 3 tool holders for the new toolpost that were small-purchased with YHS funds.

Best regards

Hello,

Yes, that makes sense.
If you or one of the others can check the centre height against the holder, that would be great.

Hello,

Given we have worked out that we can modify the bits that need modification, would it be possible to get these bits ordered soon?
