Hi Folks,

Many of us hikers also kayak the creek in the summer, so this should be of interest to you.  I've also attached a map showing where the business operates.  All of the blue is within County Park.  Over 92% of the operation is within a public park, but they aren't asking the County for any permission to use the park!  We think it's great that a business brings people out to enjoy Yolo County, but it has to be done such that the public resources don't suffer.

Help Us Protect our Public Resources and
Keep Cache Creek Clean

Imagine if a business could use a public park and open space area for free, flooding the park with hundreds of people each weekend, but with no oversight, no limits on how and when they operated, and no compensation to the taxpayers for use of public property.  Is that fair to us, the public that own the park?

On March 27th, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors will vote on a new ordinance regarding commercial use of Cache Creek.  Right now, a large rafting company runs trips down Cache Creek, passing almost the entire way through Yolo County public park land.  Up to 800 patrons a weekend use the public waterways and the County Park land, yet the County receives no money to deal with trash, restroom maintenance, park maintenance, Sheriff's search and rescue, and impacts to the riparian area from hundreds of commercial rafters coming down the river each day.  Right now, the County has no say on how many people use the public property by commercial users, no assurance that basic health and safety procedures are being followed, and the taxpayers subsidize commercial use of public property by having to pay for trash cleanup, restroom maintenance, and restoration of the stream banks.  The County now has a chance to remedy this.  Please contact the Board and urge them to:

Pass the ordinance requiring commercial users of public property and resources to enter into an agreement with the County to allow for such use, and for the County to recover costs associated with commercial use of public property.

Passing this ordinance will allow continued commercial use but will make sure the public resources are protected!
