There I saw the tree known as Cuta whose flowers and leaves were radiant like jewels. It was a heaven-scraping tree. The celestials who dwelt on it filled the atmosphere with their songs. Perfected sages who could assume any form they liked also dwelt on it. It was an enormous tree of immeasurable dimensions.

I saw the different types of birds that dwelt on that tree. I saw the famous swan which is the vehicle for the creator Brahma. I saw the bird Suka which is the vehicle of the fire-god and which was learned in the scriptures. I saw the peacock which is the vehicle of the god Kartikeya. I also saw the bird known as Bharadvaja, as also other birds. And at a great distance on that tree I saw crows. Among them I saw the great Bhusunda who sat there in utter tranquillity and peace. He was beautiful, radiant and peaceful.

This was the famous Bhusunda the long-lived. He had lived through several world-cycles. He remembered even those who lived aeons ago. He remained silent. He was free from I-ness and mine-ness. He was the friend and relation of all.

~vlm.2. This tree was covered with the dust of its flowers, which shrouded it as a thick mist or cloud; and its flowers shown as bright as brilliant gems upon it; its great height reaching to the sky, made it appear as a steeple or pinnacle standing upon the peak. (Allegorically the Kalpatree is the tree of Desire, which branches out into the various objects of our wish. Its flowers are all our sanguine hopes and expectations, which are hidden under the dark mist of futurity. The crown dwelling in its dark hollow, is the undwelling obscure soul, which is hid under the impervious gloom of our ignorant minds and false egoism. Its nest is in the highest divinity, and it is immortal because it is a particle of Eternal spirit).

Its filaments were more shining than the flash of lightnings, and the pollen of the flowers were brighter far than the circumbent beams of the radiant sun. (The flowers of the tree of Desire being our hopes and expectations, they are of course more numerous than the countless stars in the sky, but it is to say, what things are meant under the allegory of their leaflets farina and pistals).

~vlm.4. The songs of the sylphs dwelling on the branches of this tree, resounded by the buzz of the humming bees, and the nimble feet and waving palms of the Apsaras in their sportive dance on every leaflet, reduplicated the number of the leaves as much again. (The feet and palms are always compared with the leaves of trees, so these meeting on every leaf is the lightsome leaping and skipping of the airy sylphs over them, increased the number of leaves to more than ever so many).

And the clouds gathering about its trunk, have doubled the size of its joints. (i.e. The fruits of high desire are fairer and larger and more cooling than even the orb of the moon, and its sections are as bright as the bodies of clouds).

~VA its fruits doubled in size by closeness with moon disk. Its
joints (what’s that?) doubled by closeness with clouds (of delude).

AS:
The joints are nodes in this contexts. They are the places where new branches sprout from. They are huge!
It could also mean the part between successive nodes. It could also mean that these are elongated.
So, generally, it is describing the hugeness.

AS:

The second is saying that the female bees (apsaras in the context) have reached the inside of the flowers
(after driving away the [male] bees by the sounds of their circular movements [or bracelets for apsaras]).
There is the first word svAkAravipulam it is an adjective for the inside of the flowers: well shaped (su+AkAra) and spacious (vipula) .

also many? Mitra says beak, gloss says saGkha, which is not in
dictionaries).

are like leaves of creeeper in yajna sacrifice (yajJa-vedi-latA-dalAn)

AS:
asthi is a bone.
It could be describing the beaks (it is a bone too) of the parrots resembling flashing lightening in a dark cloud.
AB does mention zaGkha a meaning not attested anywhere else. It Mitra says saGkha, that might be the due to the Bengali custom of identifying s with z and/or S.

*vlm.2. *vlm.3. Its flowers were twice as much as the number of stars in heaven, and its leaves redoubled the clouds in their bulk and thickness. Its filaments were more shining than the flash of lightnings, and the pollen of the flowers were brighter far than the circumbent beams of the radiant sun.

So, generally, it is describing the hugeness.

*VA. I saw (parrots, vehicle of Agni), who chirped many mantras,

sounding like “svaha”,
resembling blue clouds with many lightnings (what is asthi, which are
also many? Mitra says beak, gloss says saGkha, which is not in
dictionaries).
(сontinued in the next)
(I saw) these parrots carrying Agni, always in god’s company, which

are like leaves of creeeper in yajna sacrifice (yajJa.vedi.latA.dalAn)

*AS:

asthi is a bone.
It could be describing the beaks (it is a bone too) of the parrots resembling flashing lightening in a dark cloud.
AB does mention zaGkha a meaning not attested anywhere else. It Mitra says saGkha, that might be the due to the Bengali custom of identifying s with z and/or S.
