Overheard on the BattleField
jd: This is an unusual canto, a sort of montage of voices. In that respect, it is very 'modern', and uncommon in saMskRta, except in works like the amaru-SaTakam. In the original text, there is no indication of who is "speaking" at any particular point. So I have improvised quotation marks, and used indentations to indicate the change of speakers. Each —" … " denotes a different speaker. Where you find —( … ), it is vasiSTha poetizing upon the ongoing events. ¶ The original, of course, has no quotation marks. It does not even use the Sanskrit <iti>, which performs a similar function. So my divisions of the speeches are an addition to the text, and the reader is welcome to disregard the attributions. More interesting would be to guess who is talking at any particular time. There is at least one pompous _brAhmaNa, and one excellent poet: probably vasiSTha quoting himself. ¶ The last stanza shows a sense of humor that is curiously modern.

"What is this, Lord? The sky looks like a pile of straw!"
"That is no straw!
That is a cloud of arrows, shot by the champions of this war."
यावन्तो भुवि सिच्यन्ते रुधिरै रणरेणव: । तावन्त्यब्दसहस्राणि भटानामास्पदं दिवि ॥5॥
"Insofar as the dusty field of battle becomes wet with blood,
the bleeding thousands of soldiers
are sure to find their home in heaven."
मा भैष्ट नैते निस्त्रिंशा नीलोत्पलदलत्विष: । अमी वीरावलोकिन्या लक्ष्म्या नयनविभ्रमा: ॥6॥
"Do not fear!
not these short.swords—these blue.lotus-splendid things."
"Fear those eye-catching snares,
those violent hero-sought riches of _lakSmI."
वीरालिङ्गनलोलानां नितम्बे सुरयोषिताम् । मेखला: शिथिलीकर्तुं प्रवृत्त: कुसुमायुधा: ॥7॥
लसद्भुजलतालोला रक्तपल्लवपाणय: । मञ्जरीमत्तनयना मध्वामोदसुगन्धय: ॥8॥
"She longs for the embraces of some Hero,
of some love-god who would let loose the girdle from her buttocks,
and make love with her."
"Those arms wave like vines in the wind,
those hands with painted fingertips;
those maddening eyes are like flowers,
perfumed with honey-sweet perfume."
गायन्त: मधुर-आलापै: नन्दन-उद्यान-देवता: । तव_आगमनम्_आशङ्क्य प्रवृत्ता: परिनर्तितुम् ॥9॥
(There was much singing,
much sweet talk,
from those eye-gladdening women come from the garden of the gods
to dance their dances as they watched.)
प्रत्यनीकं भिन्नत्यन्त: कुठारै: कठिनैरियम् । सेना ग्राम्येव वनिता दयितं दृष्टिचेष्टितै: ॥10॥
"The army breaks-into the town with ruthless battle-axes.
They come like a country girl
who strikes her lover with her shifting eyes!"
हा पितुर्मम भल्लेन शिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम् । सूर्यस्य निकटं नीतं कालेनेवाष्टमो ग्रह: ॥11॥
"Oh, my father's head is flying towards the sun!"
"And it goes there like _rahu, to eclipse it."
आपादशृङ्खलाप्रोतभ्रमत्स्थूलोपलद्वयम् । भ्रामयंश्चित्रदण्डाख्यं चक्रमूर्ध्वभुजो जवात् ॥12॥
"Look there—
a pair of boulders, linked with chain:
they call that flying, whirling pair
the 'citra-daNDa Wonder-Stick'.
Cuts.off more heads than discuses!"
योध: यम इव_आभाति याम्यात्_आयाति दिक्तटात् । सर्वत: संहरन्_सेनाम्_एहि याम: यथागतम् ॥13॥
"This battle is like _yama, come from the south country.
Where he goes,
the armies are destroyed by him."
"I think we should get out of here!"
सद्यश्छिन्नशिर: श्वभ्रमज्जत्कङ्ककुलाकुला: । कबन्धा: परिनृत्यन्ति तालोत्ताला रणाङ्गणे ॥14॥
(Suddenly, heads are split,
there,
in a canyon,
and the birds dive down.
The headless bodies dance about, clapping time in the battle-field.
गीर्वण-गण-गोष्टीषु प्रवृत्ता: संकथा: मिथ: । कदा लोकान्तरम् धीरा: कथम् यास्यन्ति के कुत: ॥15॥
(Some eloquent observers asked,
doubtfully wondering:)
"When will they go to the other-world, those heroes?"
"And how?"
"And who?"
"And why?"
निगिरत्यागता: सेना: स्रवन्तीर् इव सागर: । समत्स्यमकरव्यूहा अहो नु विषमो भट: ॥16॥
"The columns of advancing troops
are rivers running to a sea with schools of nibbling fish and sharks.
Death's a devilish warrior!"
कटेषु करिणाम् कीर्णा: धारा-नाराच-राजय: । पतिता: इव संपूर्णा: शृङ्ग-संघेषु वृष्टय: ॥17॥
"The heads of elephants are stuck with rows of arrows—
thick as rain on those elephantine mountains."
हा कुन्तेन शिरो नीतं ममेत्येवं विवक्षत: । शिरसाऽजीवमित्येवं खे खगेनेव वाशितम् ॥18॥
"Oh, no! My head is riding on a javelin!"
(That's what seems to be said by a catapulting dead head,
like a crow croaking in the sky.)
यन्त्रपाषाणवर्षेण यैषास्मान्परिषिञ्चति । सेनानुशृखलाजालवलना क्रियतां बलात् ॥19॥
"A shower of catapulted stones,
and then the men who sent them."
"Now they're setting the Elephant Hobble,
quickly deploying in encirclement."
वलीपलितनिर्मुक्तं पूर्वभार्याप्सरा: सती । अङ्गीकरोति भर्तारं परिज्ञाय रणे हतम् ॥20॥
"There is an _apsarA widow claiming a body from the field."
"It's free at last from doddering Old Age,
a body in the battlefield."
आदिवं रचिताकारा: कुन्तकाननकान्तय: । वीराणां स्वर्गमारोढुमिव सोपानपङ्क्तय: ॥21॥
"Toward the sky, troublesome forms:
a glory-forest of lances climb the mountain."
"It's their staircase,
leading them up to Svarga Heaven."
कान्तकाञ्चनकान्ताङ्गे भटस्योरसि कामिनी । दृष्टा देवपुरन्ध्रीयं भर्तुरन्वेषणान्विता ॥22॥
हा हतं सैन्यं अस्माकं भटैरुद्धतमुष्टिभि: । महाप्रलयकल्लोलै: सुरशैलस्थलं यथा ॥23॥
"There's a girl seeking her lover's body,
a golden chested soldier:
she is a goddess looking.for her man.
But oh, another soldier's slain
by warriors with their upraised swords!"
"A holy mountain falls
before the billows of the Great Doomsday."
युध्यध्वम्_अग्रत: मूढा नयता_अर्ध-मृतान्_नरान् । निजान्_पाद-प्रहारेण मा_एतान्_दारयता-अधमा: ॥24॥
"Fight the enemy we face, fools,
and don't be trampling our wounded!"
धम्मिल्लवलनाव्यग्रे घनोत्कण्ठेऽप्सरोगणे । भटो दिव्यशरीरेण पार्श्वप्राप्तो निरीक्ष्यताम् ॥25॥
(Their heads circled with braids,
eager for men,
the crowd of heavenly apsarA-s watch the warriors.)
फुल्लहेमारविन्दासु छायाशीतजलानिलै: । स्वर्गनद्यास्तटीष्वेनं दूरायातं विनोदय ॥26॥
"Among sun-golden lotuses,
with cooling breezes, by shaded
waters, rivers of Heaven,
on such shores, hard to reach, let them
find at last their heavenly rest."
विविधायुधसंघट्टखण्डितोग्रास्थिकोटय: । खे कवन्त्य: कणत्कारै: प्रसृतास्तारका इव ॥27॥
व्योम्नि जीवनदीवाहे वहत्सायकवारिणि । चक्रावर्तिणि गच्छन्ति गिरयोऽप्यणुपङ्कताम् ॥28॥
(From every sort of weaponry fragments lie in the battlefield,
mingled with kotis of bare bones clunking 'kaNat-kaNat',
like hard sea-crests colliding in the air.
In the sky, there is a river of jIva-s;
from the sky a shower of missiles,
rolling discuses that grind the mountains into dust.)
भ्रमद्भिर्ग्रहमार्गेषु शिरोभिर्वीरभूभृताम् । आयुधांशुलतानाललग्नासिदलकण्टकै: ॥29॥
केतुपट्टमृणालाङ्गदलैर्लब्धशिलीमुखै: । वहद्वातचलत्पद्मं नभ: पद्मसर: कृतम् ॥30॥
"The heads of the heroic EarthLords drift like planets along the ecliptic,
and their weapons are their planetary radiance.
The torn banners are lotus-filaments, the bodies its petals;
the arrows come like browsing bees, the lotuses flow with the wind."
मृतमातङ्गसंघाते गिराविव पिपीलिका: । भीरव: परिलीयन्ते स्त्रिय: पुंवक्षसीव च ॥31॥
"Like the arrows stuck in a dead elephant
—like ants on a hill—
they hug each other, the fearful women,
as if they were clinging against their husband's barrel chest."
अपूर्वोत्तमसौन्दर्यकान्तसंगमशंसिन: । वान्ति विद्याधरस्त्रीणामलकोल्लासिनोऽनिला: ॥32॥
"They have no rival,
no,
not those most beautiful _vidyAdhara Sorcerer women!
They whisper their secret promises of love,
their fair hair blowing in the wind."
छत्रेषूड्डीयमानेषु स्थितेषु व्योम्नि चन्द्रता । इन्दुनेव यशोमूर्त्या कृता शुभ्रातपत्रता ॥33॥
"The parasols that fly about the sky
are tiny satellites beneath the full moon,
the emblem of glory,
and the moonbeams make a great white umbrella of light."
भटो मरणमूर्च्छान्ते निमेषेणामरं वपु: । स्वकर्मशिल्पिरचितं प्राप्त: स्वप्नपुरं यथा ॥34॥
"After his death-oblivion, a soldier attains a deathless body,
fixed by the nature of his own karma.
It is just like seeing a city in a dream."
शूलशक्त्यृष्टिचक्राणां वृष्टयो मुक्ततुष्टय: । व्योमाब्धौ मत्स्यमकरसंकुलावयवा: स्थिता: ॥35॥
"The pikes, javelins, discuses, battle-axes—
let loose, they fall like rain."
(In the sky-sea, schools of fishes and sharks nibble at limbs.)
शरोत्कृत्तसितच्छत्रकलहंसैर्नभःस्थलम् । भाति संचितपूर्णेन्दुबिम्बलक्षैरिवावृतम् ॥36॥
"Those arrow-torn white parasols go drifting like a flock of geese.
The sky is covered with them all, like a disintegrated moon."
क्रियते गगनोड्डीनैश्चामरैश्चारुघर्घरै: । वातावधूतसंरोधतरङ्गनिकरद्युति: ॥37॥
दृश्यते हेतिदलिताश्छत्रचामरकेतव: । आकाशक्षेत्रविक्षिप्ता यशःशालिलता इव ॥38॥
वहद्भिर्व्योम्नि सक्षेम पश्य नीता क्षयं शरै: । शक्तिवृष्टिरुपायान्ती सस्यश्री: शलभैरिव ॥39॥
(Sky-flying fly-whisks make a subtle gurgling radiance of sound,
like drops of wind-shaken waves colliding.
Shredded by flying javelins,
scraps of parasols,
fly-whisks,
banners—
the sky-field is overspread with them,
a garland to the warriors' abounding fame.
Floating in the sky, we hear:)
"Look out!
there's a piercing of arrows coming, a shearing of spears!"
(They reap a rich harvest,
like locusts.)
एषा प्रसृतदोर्दण्डभटखड्गच्छटात्कृति: । कठिनात् कंकटाज्जाता मृत्योरेवोग्रहुंकृति: ॥40॥
"The outstretched arms of a soldier brandish a cudgel.
'Cha-ta-ta-ta' it sounds."
"On armor it sounds 'Hoom!',
which is the resonance of death."
हेतिकल्पानिलक्षुण्णा दन्तनिर्झरवारय: । जनताक्षयकालेऽस्मिन्भग्ना नगा नगा इव ॥41॥
"Mountains are shattered by the Doomsday winds;
mountainous elephants are felled by snares,
or fall from cliffs of the elephantine mountains."
सचक्रनाथसूताश्वं व्यूधं रक्तमहाह्रदे । हाहाभिभूतगतिकं चेष्टिते रथपत्तनम् ॥42॥
(A DiscusLord,
his driver,
and his horse,--
they lie-down together in a pool of blood.
Not cries of war,
but cries of woe,
when fear strikes-at
charioteers and villagers.)
करकंकटकुट्यङ्कखड्गसंघट्टटांकृतै: । कालरात्र्या प्रनृत्यन्त्या रणवीणेव वाद्यते ॥43॥
"The armor-denting cudgels strike
'tomm-tomm' like the drums of Doomsday Eve,
but the delightful lute cannot be heard in battle,
although it speaks."
नरेभखरवाजिभ्यो ये च्युता रक्तनिर्झरा: । पश्य तद्बिन्दुसिक्तेन वायुनारुणितां दिश: ॥44॥
"The warlike men and elephants fall down, pour waterfalls of blood!"
"Look how the drops of blood are scattered by the wind,
making the sky sunset."
शस्त्रांशुजलदे व्योम्नि कालीचिकुरमेचके । शरकोरकभारस्रङ्मेघे विद्युदिवोदिता ॥45॥
"Mist in the sky?"
"Clouds of arrows!"
(...Dark clouds, dark as the darkness of deadly kAlI...
And now another cloud, budded with flashing flowers!"
अनन्तरक्तसंसक्तसन्नावनितलायुधै: । भुवनं भात्यभिज्वालमग्निलोक इवाकुलम् ॥46॥
Everywhere unbounded blood-red sticky weapons cover the ground.
The red earth seems to have caught fire,
it is Agni-loka Fire-World.)
भुशुण्डीशक्तिशूलासिमुसलप्रासवृष्टय: । अन्योन्यच्छेदभेदाभ्यां करप्रकरतोऽपतन् ॥47॥
"The warclubs,
and the javelins,
the spikes and pikes,
swords and maces,
and barbed spears
—all fall in a rain—
a cutting rain, a splitting rain."
अक्षोभैकप्रहरणाद्यातुधान्योऽन्यचेष्टितम् । संरम्भावेक्षणप्रज्ञं रणं स्वप्नमिव स्थितम् ॥48॥
"A lone soldier with his weapon can be like a Magician,—
he makes the enemy disappear!"
"Another kind of soldier,
in the heat of battle,
sees it all as something like a waking dream."
अनन्यशब्दाविरतहताहतिरणज्झणै: । गायतीव क्षतक्षोभमुदितो रणभैरिव ॥49॥
"It is like singing, the rattle of battle;
they are like dancers, the warriors.
It is the dance of Lord ziva's fearsome _bhairava-s."
अन्योन्यरणहेत्युग्रचूर्णपूर्णो रणार्णव: । वालकामय एवाभूच्छिन्नतरङ्गक: ॥50॥
सरभसरसवद्विसारितूर्य-प्रतिरवपूरितलोकपाललोक: ।
रणगिरिरयमुग्रपक्षदक्ष-प्रतिसृतिवृत्त इवाम्बरे युगान्ते ॥51॥
(After many fierce encounters,
the javelins are smashed to dust:
they make a sandy seashore in
the battle-sea, where the waves break.
Impetuous, impassioned,
battle-horns resound through every quarter of the world.)
"The battle roars like a mountain stream,
with fierce fighting on the wings, and fast advances.
Skies like this are seen at the end of an Age."
हा हा धिक्प्रविकटकङ्कटाननोद्या=त्प्रोड्डीनप्रकटतडिच्छटाप्रतप्ता: ।
क्रेङ्कारस्फुरितगुणेरिता रणन्तो नाराचा: शिखरिशिलागणं वहन्ति ॥52॥
"Oh, what an unlovely war!
It's their armor:
we shoot arrows like thunderbolts,
streaks of fire from the heavens,
and, with a 'clang!' they bang their rattling target,
and after that rattlle they bounce-back to the mountain-tops."
छिन्नेच्छाच्छमिति न यावदङ्गभङ्गं कुर्वन्तो ज्वलदनलोज्ज्वला: पृषत्का: ।
तावद्द्राग्द्रुतमिति एहि मित्र यामो यामोऽयं प्रवहति वासरश्चतुर्थ: ॥53॥
"It's clearly time for us to split from here!
It's not so very much the body-breaking work,—
but all those fire-arrows,
they fly too fast,
they fly too far.
So my suggestion is:
let's get out of here!

**vlm.4. What are these, says one, that are flying as straws in the firmament? They are, says the other, no straws, but the flight of arrows, that have filled the atmosphere.

As long as the dust of the earth, cries another, is moistened by the bloodshed of the brave, so long are the heroes entitled to glory, and have their abode in heaven for myriads of years. * Notwithstanding the reward of heavenly abodes promised to the slayer and slain in war, in the Sástra and Koran, the Asiatics are far backward now-a-days, both to kill and to be killed than the Europeans, who are forbidden by the Holy writ, to slay and shed human blood. Thus there is a laxity of the injunction and prohibition on both sides.

**DC. Do not fear! not these swords do not bring delusion, they are splendid petals of blue lotus of Lakshmi beholding heroes.
**AS. Both meanings are
mistaken. It says: Don't be afraid, these are not daggers, but glances of Laxmi
with the sheen of a blue lotus eying the brave (with desires). Notice that
all the words nIlotpalatviSaH, vIrAvalokinyA: lakSmyA: are in gen. sing. and
the vibhramas are what are possessed! The Laxmi can be the Laxmi or victory -
termed as jayalakSmI.
**vlm.6. Fear not these sable swords, says the sástra, whose blades are worn by
the brave like petals of blue lotuses about their hecks and breasts; and
bravoes are favourites in the eyes of the goddess of fortune. (Fortune favours
the brave).

the second line, the dancer is kAlarAtri - the Doomsday night. It says, the

clanging sound in the first line is indeed caused by the swords hitting on body
armor. The only problem is what armor? The first is karakaGkaTa and this can be
interpreted as an arm plate. The second is a kuTi-aGka and this is a bit
problematic. The kuTi is a body. aGka has numerous meanings, none of them is an
armor. However, one of the meanings is a solid bolt and thus, it could mean a

**DC. from one’s calm strike another is possessed by demon, wise onlookers see battle like a dream?
**AS. There is a lot going on in this metaphor. On one hand,
it describes the amazing demonic action (yAtudhAnyA - by demonic action) of one
concluding the war with one calm masterstroke (akSobha-eka-praharaNAt) being
witnessed with angry recognition (saMrambha-IkSaNa-prajJam). Then compares it
with a dream where the whole action sequence is wiped out with one swift action
of awakening. There is an interesting twist in the words yAtudhAno'nyaceSTitam.
As is, it would have to break as yAtudhAnya: anyaceSTitam. But yAtudhAnya:
does not fit any meaning, it needs to be instrumental as yAtudhAnyA. The AB
commentary drops the avagraha in its consideration and suggest that anya is an unya
which is a shortened form of unnaya. He says the drop of one "n" is
cCandasa - vedic or ancient!
**vlm.48. The fighting of one man among the motionless many, is like the magic play of a magician* where the conjuror acts his part amidst the bewitched beholders, Lo! there the indifferent spectators viewing the warfare as a dream (by their prajna or inward vision of the mind). * P. mujosi S.
