what did viduu.ratha do next,
did he make a charge from his camp?
vasiSTha said:
विदूरथ: स्वसदना-न्_निर्गत: परिवारित: ।
परिवारेण महता ऋक्ष-ओघेण_इव चन्द्रमा: ॥2॥
Surrounded,
viduu.ratha now led a foray from his camp—
and he was the moon in that company,
shining within a sea of stars.
सन्नद्ध-सर्व-अवयवो लग्न-हार-विभूषण: ।
महा-जयजय-आरावै: सुरेन्द्र इव निर्गत: ॥3॥
Girded in armor,
glorious in garlands and jewels,
with cries of "jaya jaya",
the _raajaa came forth like indra the GodKing.
समादिशन्_योधगणम् शृण्वन्_मण्डल-संस्थितिम् ।
आलोकयन्_वीरगणान्_आरुरोह नृपो रथम् ॥4॥
Disposing his troops,
and learning the state of his surroundings,
and inspecting all of his warriors,
the king mounted his chariot.
कूट-आकार-समाकारम् मुक्ता-माणिक्य-मण्डितम् ।
पताका-पञ्चभिर्_व्याप्तम् द्यु-विमानम्_इव_उत्तमम् ॥5॥
It seemed as huge as a mountain,
it was adorned with pearls and jewels,
bearing five banners,
a chariot as fine as the divine skycars above.
चक्र.भित्ति.परिप्रोत.प्रकचत्.काञ्चन-अङ्कुरम् ।
मुक्ताजाल.रणत्.कार.चारु.विक्रम.कूबरम् ॥6॥
Its wheels were hooped in glistering gold,
clattering with the strings of pearls
that bounced against the axle-tree.
सुग्रीवैर् लक्षणोपेत-इ: प्रशस्तै: प्रचलै: कृशै: ।
जव-उड्डयन.वेगेन प्रवहद्भि: सुरान् इव ॥7॥
The long-necked horses ran like lean thoroughbreds,
trembling as they sped fast as the wind,
as if they carried sura Brightlings off to war in heaven.
वायुम् जवेन सहसा असहद्भिर्_गति.क्रमै: ।
प्रोह्यद्भिर्_इव पश्चार्धम्_आपिबद्भिर्_इव_अम्बरम् ॥8॥
Their flanks took the spur,
and they ran,
galloping faster than any wind:—
they seemed to swallow-up the sky.
योजितैः_इव संपूर्णैः_चन्द्रैः_चामर-दीप्तिभि: ।
अश्वैः_अष्टभिः_आ=बद्धम्_आशा-पूरक-हेषितै: ॥9॥
Yoked in harness, those horses shone like eight full moons,
and their tails whisked-about like royal fly-whisks.
Their neighing filled the hills everywhere.
अथ उदपतद्.उद्दाम-नाग-अभ्र-रव-निर्भर: ।
शैल.भित्ति.प्रतिध्वान.दारुणो दुन्दुभि-ध्वनि: ॥10॥
But now the elephants let loose a rowdy roaring.
It echoed awfully from the canyon walls,
like loud _dundubhi Doubledrums.
मत्त-सैनिक-निर्मुक्तैर्_व्याप्तम् "कल.कल"-आरवै: ।
किंकिणी.जाल-निर्ध्वानैर्_हेति.संघट्ट.घट्टितै: ॥11॥
And the wild soldiers too
shouted their war-cries,
"kala-kala".
And there was a tinkling of bells,
their armor struck by missiles falling everywhere.
धनुश् चटचटा.शब्दै: शर.सीत्कार.गायनै: ।
परस्पर-अङ्गञिष्पष्ट.कवच-ओघ.झण.झणै: ॥12॥
There was a twanging
"chata-chata"
that sounded from the flexing bows,
as a procession of arrows whistling
"sheet",
jangled their
"jhana-jhana"
upon the armored throng.
ज्वलद्-अग्नि.टणत्-कारैर् आर्तिमत्-क्रन्दन-आरवै: ।
परस्पर.भट-आह्वानैर्-बन्दि.विक्षुब्ध.रोदनै: ॥13॥
There were flashing flames and crackling
"tanat"...
and the noises of painful wailing;
and troopers' challenging each-other, one-on-one;
and, too,
a loud lamenting of captives.
शिला-घनी-कृत-अशेष-ब्रह्माण्ड-कुहरो ध्वनि: ।
हस्त-ग्राह्यो_अभवद् भीमो दशाशा-कुञ्ज-पूरक: ॥14॥
It is stone-thick throughout, this brahma.egg-cavern!—
stone-thick enough to hold the awful sound
that fills the ten directions of the place.
अथ उदपतद्-आदित्य-पथ-पीवर-रोधकम् ।
रजो-निभेन भू-पीठम् अम्बर-उड्डयन-उन्मुखम् ॥15॥
And then there is upflying dust,
dust thick enough to hide the sun;
and everywhere the wind-blown earth flies through the sky:—
dust everywhere!
गर्भ-वासम्_इव आपन्नम् तेन आसीत् तन् महापुरम् ।
मूढत्वम् यौवनेन इव घनताम् आययौ तम: ॥16॥
As light comes to a dweller in the womb,
dust overcame that great city.
As folly comes to a youth,
dimness grew to darkness.
प्रययु: क्व अपि दीपौघा दिवसेन इव तारका: ।
आययुर् बलम् आलोला नैश-भूत.परम्परा: ॥17॥
Where there had been a sea of flames,
like stars in the daytime,
there now appeared in force a rollicking parade of creatures of the night.
...
ददृशु: तत्_महा.युद्धम् द्वे लीले सा कुमारिका ।
प्रस्फुटत्-द्_हृदयेन_इव देवी.दत्त-महा.दृशौ ॥18॥
They watched that great battle—
the ladies,
liilaa with liilaa,–
and she saw everything clearly,
as-if within the heart,
by means of her great goddess-granted sight.
प्रशेमुर्_अथ हेतीषु प्रोद्यत् कटकट-आरवा: ।
एकार्णव-पयः-पूरैर् वालवा इव वह्नय: ॥19॥
Men lay buried beneath missiles
that fell with their crackling kata-kat sound
like the vaadava undersea fire
emerging from the Doomsday flood.
शनै: सेनाम् समाकर्षन्-न् आज्ञायत बल-अन्तरम् ।
विवेश पक्ष-प्रोड्डिनो मेरुर् एकम् इव अर्णवम् ॥20॥
Carefully gathering his army,
he arrayed his battalions,
with his flying wing entering the battle
like Mount su.meru sinking into Doomsday Ocean.
अथ_उदभूद्_गुण-ध्वानम् चटच्-चटद्-इति स्फुतम् ।
रचित-अंशु.मय-अम्भोदाश्_चेरु: परपरम्परा: ॥21॥
And then uprose another sound,
"chatattatat",
the bowstrings' twang,
that made a cloud that came before the fast-advancing enemy.
ययुर् अम्बरम् आश्रित्य नाना-हेति-विहंगमा: ।
प्रसस्रुर् अलम् आत्त-असु-मलिना: शस्त्र-दीप्तया: ॥22॥
They come into the sky for refuge, all those many missile-birds;
but they all fall down soon enough, and mingle with the fallen swords.
जज्वलु: शस्त्र-संघट्ट-ज्वलना उल्मुक-अग्निवत् ।
जगर्जु: शर-धार-ओघान् वर्षन्तो वीर-वारिदा: ॥23॥
They glisten, clanging and banging together, swords making sparks—
they're torches!
And overhead a storm-cloud of arrows pours-down its rain.
विविशु: क्रकच-क्रूरा वीराङ्गेषु च हेतय: ।
पेतु: पट-पट-आरवम् हेति-निष्पिष्टयो_अम्बरे ॥24॥
They entered,
spears that cut like saws,
carving the bodies of the men,
who fell
—a pata-pata sound!—
pounded by weapons from the sky.
जग्मु: शमम् तमांस्य् आशु शस्त्रक-अनल-दीपकै: ।
बभूवुर् अखिला सेना नवनाराचरोम-शा: ॥25॥
The darkness quickly disappeared
before the flashing fire-arrows,
and the entire army appeared to wear a coat
of fur on fire.
उत्तस्थुर् यमयात्रायाम् कबन्धनट-पङ्क्तय: ।
जगुर् उच्चै रणोद्रेकम् पिशाच्यो रणदारिका: ॥26॥
Then there arose,
to join this Feast of Death,
lines of headless dancers
cavorting on the battlefield—
_pizaachii Demonessess,
the daughters of war.
उदगुर् दन्त-संघट्ट-टंकारा दन्तिनाम् बलात् ।
ऊहु: क्षेपण-पाषाण-महानद्यो नभस्तले ॥27॥
Rising,
and with a clatter like the tangling tusks of elephants,
great rivers of stones, flung from slings, flew and descended from the sky.
पेतु: शवा निवातास्त-संशुष्क-वन-पर्णवत् ।
निर्ययुर् लोहिता नद्यो रण-अद्रेर् मृति-वर्षिण: ॥28॥
The corpses lay like withered leaves in a windless forest.
And there flowed red rivers, swelled in that mountain battle by a rain of death.
प्रशेमु: पांसवो रक्तैस् तमांस्य् आयुध-वह्नि-भि: ।
युद्ध-एकध्यान-त: शब्दा भयानि मृति-निश्चयै: ॥29॥
The clouds of dust soaked-up their blood.
The dark grew bright with fire.
The men spoke—
only words of war,
their fears subdued by certainty of death.
अभवत् केवलम् युद्धम् अपशब्दम् असंभ्रमम् ।
अनाकुल-अम्बुवाह-आभाम् खड्ग-वीचिसटांकृतम् ॥30॥
Now on the battlefield there were no angry words,
no confusion,—
only calm flying clouds above,
and head.hammer-waves sounding tumm-tumm.
खद-खद-रव-संवहच्-छरौघ-म्
टक-टकित-आरव-संपतद्-भुशुण्डि ।
झण-झण-रव-संमिलन्-महास्त्रं
तिमि-तिमि-वद् रणम्-आस दुस्तरम् तत् ॥31॥
The"khada-khada" sounds resound in a sea of arrows;—
the "taka-takita" of crowbars that thud "jhana-jhana" as they fall,—
beneath gathering clouds of _astra-weapons whistling "timi-timi",—
so they give battle to the invincible That.
