*vlm.p.1. Râma said, "Sage, describe this warfare to me, as I love stories of this kind."

* vimAna SkyCar - #mA -> #vimAna‑, #vimAnI – vi>mAna – measuring<out [the kilometers), traversing; — #vimAna:, #vimAnam - a car or chariot of the gods, any mythical self-moving aerial car (sometimes serving as a seat or throne, sometimes self-moving and carrying its occupant thru the air; other descriptions make the vimAna more like a house or palace). • modern Hindi calls it an airplane, but that is unlikely in the present club-wielding context. • a summary of the literature is at http://checkforanswers.blogspot.com/2007/01/1-overview-of-literature-word-vimana-is.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vimana

*AS. The whole of this chapter abounds in onomatopoeic [imitative] alliterations, and is more a play upon words than display of sense. It is interesting however, for these jingling words in the language, as also for the names of the warlike weapons in use among the ancients. (Khanda-khanda) against arms, filled the air with their fragments flying like birds in the air.

The compound is rather convoluted. everything after patat is a description of the warriors, but there is no explicit word for a warrior; it is simply deduced. There is no mention of the elephants falling, though. There were rivers of blood flowing from the tracks of chariots (ratha-raya-utpanna) roaring about (raNat).

*AS. There were elephants driven by hooks, horses with the warriors and chariots with flags. kulAcala can mean a clan a stable family, perhaps the army of one side here. So the meaning could be: The whole army (kulAcala) was disturbed by (Akula) of the disrespect (helA) suffered by the slain (hata-AlUna - lit. killed and chopped) in the skirmish fought with ploughs (halAhali). hala or plough was used as a weapon, perhaps it was something like a hoe used for hitting as well as poking.

*DC. - on earth, trees of the forest are dug off as if by a great spade; multitude of rocks and dead and wounded peoplec cover ground on the distance of 2 bow-ranges. *AS. This is probably describing how the battle ground was prepared.

*AS. Tall men (sutAla - lit. tall like the tAla tree) have cleared wooded areas (vanabhUtala) with raised spades. The people (lokazivAvali lit. people and temples - or all ordinary dwelings) have been driven out (astAlUna) for a measure of twice the bow (dhanurdviguNamAtrA - this means twice the distance of the range of a bow, thus, probably to keep the people away and safe from the fight).

*jd. sutAla-uttAla-kuddAla — VLM translates as 3 sorts of sharp weapon that undermine the forest. The dictionaries call a kuddAla a spade, and often words defined as "spade" are also weapons. But the words <sutAla> and <uttAla> are not defined as weapons. Moreover, they are not found in Singh's comprehensive Ancient Indian Warfare. ¶ The only dictionary reference to <sutAla> is as a musical tempo. I take it as a reference to the sutala Underworld, or else perhaps the monotonous chugging of spades as the troops dig entrenchments.

*DC. - as pepper flavoring, yelling soldiers were thrown into agni’s pot - burnt by battle’s discharged weapons, or holding battle’s discharged weapons.

*AS. I think kumbha-agni is a kind of weapon dropped on the soldiers. It can be like a bomb - VLM declares it a petrol bomb! The sounds of weapons falling on the soldiers burning with thrown fire bombs became more colorful by sounds of weapons thrown by the soldiers burning with thrown fire bombs; like condiments become more colorful by addition of pepper. Thus both sides were bombed and yet were firing and receiving weapons. I would not translate marIci as chilies like VLM, but as peppers. The book was produced before chilies were discovered(:-))

jd. if they were discovered in S.Am, by an Inca or Aztec, they might predate the book. in any case, the time.frame here is treta yuga.

*DC. - soldiers thrown into the pot, of horrible look burnt like charcoals; soldiers thrown into the pot, fried in the poison cloud (of battle?) *AS. Again, the soldiers were not thrown into pots, but pots full of fire - bombs were thrown on them. In the first line, their eyes were burnt by the fire. In the second line, they suffered from poison in the pot - perhaps something like mustard gas???

-jd. I use "fallen into the pot" to indicate to indicate a fire ambush from enemy catapults.
