The KING--
What more is there to say?
after that Shantytown Festival
I became known to my friends as Pushta-Pulkasa, the Fat*Cat
.
* A more accurate (but, to some, bitterly offensive) translation would be "Fat Nigger".
VLM reads "... named as Pushta—Pukkusha or cherished Chándála by my fellows."

that would contaminate a caste member.

VLM & KG ceNDaka
#ceNDaka - a support made up of grass, fm3107.009. The word is found in Hindi and some other vernaculars in the form indu or indvA or innu or binnu. Sanskrit also has a word iNDvA meaning covering for hands to protect them when removing the ukhA fire. In sound the Hindi iNDu and iNDvA conform more to Sanskrit iNDva but in meaning they conform more to ceNDaka of the yoga.vAsiSThA. as ceNDaka has not been found elsewhere nothing is known of its derivation, The form of it, however, suggests that it might have been a Desi word accepted into Sanskrit. - Satyavat Shastri +

*vlm. I took my food apart and untouched by any body, for fear of being polluted by the touch of a vile and base born family; and because the pungency of my unsavoury diet, made my mouth wry at every morsel.
*AS: I ate it with my mouth full of many ailments, which led to reduction of my acquired vitality (gRhItateja: kSataye). . Thus, instead of nurturing, the food led to more weakness, perhaps because it irritated his mouth further.
*vlm.20 I dug them out plentifully from the woodland grounds and ate them with a zest, like a fortunate man has tasting his dainty dishes of well cooked meat.

* *mArga.Avika – ABComm. says <mRgANAm mAMsam "mArgam">. *mRga is the generic term for country animals, particularly a deer. The vowel expands to <mArga>, or "meat". Avika is a sheep, but I have translated "mutton", but would rather make it "pork", on the ground that the common term for the meat of many South.Sea cannibals was "long pig".
*VA - I am lost at this one completely I was selling own meat like that of animals to others (human meat???) cutting off best pieces of bodies and limbs???
*AS:He was not selling, but buying. I became plump (pezalaH) on tearing off piece after piece from bodies (tasya prANI-aGga- apuSa: protkRtya utkRtya), which sold by others (vikrItam paNyam anyataH) and which was human flesh, sold as if it was deer or goat (mArga.Avikam iva AtmIyam ) . People were so desperate that they were selling human flesh as well - probably from the dead. The AB commentary does not suggest this gory meaning. It suggests that it was indeed animal flesh, but he felt as if he was buying his own flesh.
*vlm.22. While I was famishing in this manner, I saw others had their venison and sheep's flesh bought from other places for their food; and who pampered their bodies also with the flesh they cut out from other living animals and devoured raw with great zest.
*sv. I cut firewood and often I had to sleep under a tree at night. When the weather became cold, I hid myself in the bushes in order to keep warm. Pork was my staple diet. Time rolled on and I became old. I began to trade in meat.
*vlm.21 I took my food apart and untouched by anybody for fear of being polluted by the touch of a vile and base born family, and because the pungency of my unsavory diet made my mouth scowl at every morsel.

*AS: For a better price (vRddhaye) they sold meats cooked in iron pots, in the poor regions of Vindhya, as if it was their accumulated sin of thousands of births cooked up. It appears as if he was buying raw meat and was reselling it cooked for a profit.
*vlm.23. They bought animal flesh sold in iron pots and stuck in spits, for undergoing migrations into as many thousand bodies as they have killed and fed upon.

*VA - strange story about selling meat while having nothing... still does not make any sense :o(( non-sold (meat) I scattered in lands of black chandalas?? second line - without seeing love ... what does spade do here???!!!! .
*AS: The first line indeed says that lumps (avikIrNam) were scattered in dirt (asatkIrNam) on the grounds of the caNDAlAs. It is not saying that he did it and I see no reference to "unsold" except AB commentary does mention it! Also, AB commentary uses the word avakIrNam (scattered about) even though the text has avikIrNam = in lumps! From second line, a new thought starts and continues through 25. I, who was as if in Hell (raurava.Apatitena iva), looked at the spade, having lost affinity for the evening (was unhappy that the night - and thus the end of opportunities for food- were about to end) and wishing to develop friendship with the bushes in Vindhya region. Thus, he was turning to digging up plants for further sustenance.
*vlm.24. I often repaired to the garden grounds of the Chandálas, with my spade and basket in the cool of the evening, in order to collect the raw flesh, which had been cast about in the fire, for making any food of them.
*sv. I took the meat to the villages on the Vindhya mountains and sold the best part of it there; what could not thus be sold at a decent profit, I cut up into bits and dried in a terribly filthy place. I would often fight with others in the tribe for a piece of meat to eat when I was afflicted with hunger.

*VA - I left afar compassion to others, like snake leaves old skin, and with cruelty happily made (other beings) cry in rain of angry arrows. AS: The second line connects with the next verse. I easily took up cruelty (krauryam aGgIkRtam ) ringing with showers of arrows, like a dark cloud at the end of the hot summer.
*vlm.38. We have cast off kindness from our hearts, as the snake leaves off his slough; and take a delight to let fly the hissing arrows of our malice, as the thunder storm betides all animals.
*sv. My heart had shed all compassion even as a snake sheds its slough.

kSAra - a. pungent, saline, sharp; m./n. any pungent or saline substance, as caustic alcali, saltpetre, natron, etc.
vikAsin - a. opened, blossoming, expanding, spreading, extensive, great.
039|| *VA - second line - far avoided by people are - smelly wounded people? or open smelly puddles of water? how it is related to the story? . AS: The second line is indeed strange, partly because its subject is people - not the King. Also, note the fem. word "vikAsinyaH". I think this is connected with the image of the raining cloud. People shunned the growing painful (rivers of ) blood.
*vlm.39. Men are delighted at the sight of cooling clouds, at the end of the hot season; but they avoid at a distance the rough briny shore spreading wide before them. (So men hail their happiness, and avoid their troubles).

For the body, they become "with clothing fluttering around the feet" and "roaring wildly".

VLM & KG ceNDaka
#ceNDaka . a support made up of grass, fm3107.009. The word is found in Hindi and some other vernaculars in the form indu or indvA or innu or binnu. Sanskrit also has a word iNDvA meaning covering for hands to protect them when removing the ukhA fire. In sound the Hindi iNDu and iNDvA conform more to Sanskrit iNDva but in meaning they conform more to ceNDaka of the yoga.vAsiSThA. as ceNDaka has not been found elsewhere nothing is known of its derivation, The form of it, however, suggests that it might have been a Desi word accepted into Sanskrit. . People were so desperate that they were selling human flesh as well . probably from the dead.

*vlm.23. They bought animal flesh sold in iron pots and stuck in spits, for undergoing migrations into as many thousand bodies as they have killed and fed upon.

*VA . strange story about selling meat while having nothing... still does not make any sense :o(( non.sold (meat) I scattered in lands of black chandalas?? second line . without seeing love ... what does spade do here???!!!!
I, who was as if in Hell (raurava.Apatitena iva), looked at the spade, having lost affinity for the evening (was unhappy that the night . and thus the end of opportunities for food. were about to end) and wishing to develop friendship with the bushes in Vindhya region.

*VA . (connected with previous) . with my traps/nets in caves/valleys of vindya I was pitiless to animals, like Death to beings. I was resting my head in yak skins??? (connected with next) in sleep without discrimination, like Vishnu on Zesha’s coils.
*AS: I don't see connection with previous line. I romped among the animals like Death itself. The second line should join with the next as you guessed. He is resting his head on sides of heads furry animals as compared to Vishnu on zeSa coils.
*vlm.42. I have caught and killed the innocent deer in the trap; to feed upon its flesh; and have killed the chouri kine, to lay my head on the hair hanging down their necks.
*sv.42.43 With nets and other traps and weapons I caused untold hardship to birds and animals.

*VA . to sky rose flutter of birds, and roars of wild animals . AS: The second line joins with verse 44 line 1, where his body is compared with a cave on the side of Vindhya. For a cave, the adjectives refer to "birds fluttering in the space at the foot" and " filled with roars of wild animals". For the body, they become "with clothing fluttering around the feet" and "roaring wildly".
*vlm.43. I slept unconscious of myself in my ignorance, as Vishnu lay on his huge hydra; I lay with my out.stretched legs and limbs in the brown cell, resounding to the yell of wild beasts abroad.

*vlm.45. I bore it on my back, as a bear bears the long bristles upon him even in the hot season; and suffered the heat of the wild fire, which burnt away many wild animals which perished in groups as in the last conflagration of the world.

*VA . first line is absent in my book? it is about great forest fire, which consumed animals as if time enjoys world cooked in fire of end of ages? As coveousness gives disease, children of my wife were both for happiness and suffering . AS: My book does have the first line too and it joins with the second line of verse 45. Often, with animals dead around me . burnt by forest fires, I became like the destroyer Kala who consumes the world by the doomsday fire. . The rest of the meaning is: As a lecherous one gives rise to diseases, as an obstinate person creates disasters, my wife gave births whic h led to misery as well as pleasure.
*vlm.46. My wife bore her young ones, both for our pleasure as well as pain: as the food of the glutton, is both for his satiety and sickness; and the influence of planets, is for our good and evil also.

*sv.48 Bound by the ropes of evil tendencies, I grew wild with anger and used abusive words, wept in misfortunes, and ate rotten food. Thus I lived for a long time, in that place.
*vlm.48. I raved sometimes in my rage, and wept at others in my bitter grief; I fared on coarse meals, and dwelt, alas! in the abodes of vulgar Chandálas. Thus I passed so many years of my misery at that place, as one fastened to the fetters of his insatiable desires, is doomed to toil and moil for naught until his death. (Bound to our desires, we are dragged to the grave).
