Queen lIlA and King Padma lead an idyllic life, but as they age lIlA fears that he might die first, in which case her own life would be intolerable. She does tapas to Goddess saraswatI and obtains the boon to have her husband’s spirit always with her. She and the goddess astral travel and time travel to see the couple’s prior life as simple brAhmaNas when her husband sees a lavish royal hunting party, creating a desire in him to possess the wealth of an empire. That desire manifests after King Padma dies and the queen and goddess see another reality in the deceased king’s mind. He is now King Viduratha ruling a vast empire with a second lIlA as his wife (III.15-30). –Palotas ed.

they looked toward the spacious sky...

एक-अर्णवम्_इव_उच्छूनम् गम्भीरम् निर्मल-अन्तरम्

कोमलम् कोमल-मरुत्-आसङ्ग-सुख-भोग-दम् ॥२॥

आह्लाद-कमलम् सौम्यम् शून्यता-अम्भस्-निमज्जनात्

अत्यन्त-शुद्धम् गंभीरम् प्रसन्नम्_अपि सज्जनात् ॥३॥

It was like an ocean,

expansive, deep, immaculate,

with comforting winds of constant happy delight,

refreshing rosy calm,

sunk in waters of Emptiness,

overwhelming and pure,

and deeper and more gracious than the very wise….

शृङ्ग.स्थ-निर्मल-अम्भोद-पीन-उदर-सुधा.आलये

विशश्रमतुः_आशासु पूऋन-चन्द्र-उदर-अमले ॥४॥

On a mountain-peak pregnant with clouds they played,

where the full moon shone on every part.

सिद्ध-गन्धर्व-मन्दार-माल-आमोद-मनोहरे

चन्द्र-मण्डल-निष्क्रान्ते रेमाते मधुर-अनिले ॥३।२४।५॥

Passing among the siddha Adepts and gandharva Choristers,

they smelled the fragrance of the mandara flowers

that wafted in the wind.

सस्नतुर्_भूरि-घर्मान्ते तडिद्-रक्त-अब्ज-संकुले

सरसि_इव जल-आपूर-मन्थरे मेघ-मण्डले ॥३।२४।६॥

They bathed in their own sweat, perspiring in the day's heat;

and the sun was in a maNDala of clouds,

a lightning‑bright lotus in a still pond.

भूतल-ओघ-महा.शैल-मृग-अलङ्कर-कोटिषु

दिक्षु बभ्रमतु: स्वैरम् भ्रमर्यौ सरसीष्व् इव ॥३।२४।७॥

They saw the earth crowded with great mountains,

with many thousand beasts.

They wandered anywhere, those two, like two bees exploring a pond.

धारा-गृह-धिया धीर-गङ्गा-निर्झर-भारिणि

भ्रेमतुर् वात-विक्षुब्ध-मेघ-मण्डल-मण्डपे ॥३।२४।८॥

They saw a waterfall, a stream coming home to great gaGgA.

They wandered in a pavilion of blowing, flowing, wind-blown clouds.

ततो मधुर-गामिन्यौ विश्राम्यन्तौ स्व.शक्तित:

शून्ये ददृशतुर् व्योम महारम्भ-अति.मन्थरम् ॥३।२४।९॥

Thereafter those two sweet travelers,

depending on their own powers,

saw,

in the Emptiness,

a sky of great extent, but very still.

अदृष्ट-पूर्वम् अन्योन्यम् सर्व.संकट-कोटरम्

अपूर्यमानम् आशून्यम् जगत्-कोटि-शतैर् अपि ॥३।२४।१०॥

It was not ever seen before by anyone,

that whole-crowded hollow:

an emptiness that's not filled,

even with a million worlds.

उपरि-उपरि-उपरि-उच्चैस् अन्यै: अन्यै: वृतम् पृथक्

विचित्राभरण-आकारै: भूतलै: सु-विमानकै: ॥३।२४।११॥

परित: पूरित-व्योम्नाम् मेरु-आदि-कुल-भूभृताम्

पद्म-राग-तट-उद्द्योतै: कल्प-ज्वाल-उपमा-उदरम् ॥३।२४।१२॥

मुक्ता-शिखर.भा=पूरैर् हिमवत्-सानु.सुन्दरम्

काञ्चन-अद्रि.स्थल-अर्चिर्भि: काञ्चन.स्थल-भासुरम् ॥३।२४।१३॥

महा.मरकत-आभाभि: शाद्वल.स्थल-नीलिमम्

द्रष्टृ-दृश्य-क्षयासक्त-जात-ध्वान्त-उत्थ-कालिमम् ॥३।२४।१४॥

पारिजात-लता-लोल-विमान-गण-केतनम्

अतस् मञ्जरिक-आकारम्_इव वैदूर्य-भूतलम् ॥३।२४।१५॥

Higher,

higher,

higher,

so high they flew:

they saw another and another world,

the various wonderfiul ornamented forms of worlds;

and saw many SkyCars in the fulness of space.

 

They saw Mount meru in its family of mountains,

its slopes crimson in the sun,

a red lotus,

a fire like the conflagration of Doomsday;—

and peaks like pearls, snowy and white;—

and table-lands lustrous with gold, mountains of radiant pure gold;

and shining emerald mountains, covered in grassy green meadows; and they saw darkness, where seer and seen were all unseen,

darkness arising out of darkerness;—

and they saw SkyCars bannered with the pArijAta flower*,

as if they were in the vidUra country.

मनस्-वेग-महा.सिद्ध-जित-वात-गम.आगमम् विमान-गृह-देव-स्त्री-गेय-वाद्य-.घुंघुमम् ॥३।२४।१६॥

And they saw Great siddha Adepts going and coming in the wind,

fast as the mind,

in their SkyCars,

while their women chanted and sang.

त्रैलोक्य-वर-भूत-ओघ-संचार-विरल-अन्तरम्

They saw the triple World

with its great flood of creatures scarcely seen,

Brightlings and Darklings,

good and bad,

each one unseen by another.

पर्यन्त-स्थित-कूष्माण्ड-रक्ष:-पैशाच-मण्डलम्

वात-स्कन्ध-महा.वेग-वहद्-वैमानिक-व्रजम् ॥३।२४।१८॥

there were kuSmANDa-s, rAkSasa Demons, pizAca-s,

maNDala-s of beings riding on the wind,

on the great highway of SkyCars,

riding their SkyCars,

and the clouds echoed the noise of their machines,

and all the planets, all the stars that rose above them as they flew.

निकट-आतप-दग्ध-अल्प-सिद्ध=सिद्ध-उज्झित-आस्पदम्

अर्क-अश्व-मुख-वात-अस्त-दग्ध-मुग्ध-विमानकम् ॥२०॥

The flying siddha Adepts were near-burned,

too far from home,

getting too near the horses of the Sun,

and his great fire seared their faces.

लोकपाल-अप्सरो-वृन्द-संचाराचार-चञ्चलम्

देव्य्-अन्त:पुरिकादग्ध-धूप-धूम-अम्बुद-अम्बरम् ॥३।२४।२१॥

स्व.स्वर्ग-आहूत-देव-स्त्री-स्वाङ्ग-विभ्रष्ट-भूषणम्

सामान्य-सिद्ध-सङ्घ-उग्र-तेजः-पुञ्ज-तमस्-बलम् ॥३।२४।२२॥

They saw Kings, and apsara-s,

a great crowd wandering restlessly;

and a gathering of goddesses in smoky incense-clouds.

The bodies of those goddesses flew down from their heavens

like falling ornaments.

 

They saw the tribe of Siddha Adepts,

with their fierce energy stronger than darkness.

बलवत् सिद्ध-संघट्ट=गम-अगम=विघट्टितै:

घनै: सांशुक-पार्श्व.स्थ-हिमवन्-मेरु-मन्दरम् ॥३।२४।२३॥

काकोलूकैर् गृध्र-भासै राशि-भूतैश् चलैर् वृतम्

नृत्यद्भिर् डाकिनी-सङ्घस् तरङ्गैर् इव वारिधिम् ॥३।२४।२४॥

प्रवृत्तैर् योगिनी.सङ्गै: श्व-काक-उष्ट्र-खर=आननै:

निरर्थम् योजन-शतम् गत्वागच्छद्भिर् आवृतम् ॥३।२४।२५॥

And from the warmth of the siddhas' gathering

snow fluttered down in flakes

that dressed the slopes of mighty meru.

And crows

and owls,

ravens,

vultures,--

a multitude of beings rushed about.

The tribe of DAkinI-s,

daughters of mother kAli,

danced like water in the ocean waves;

and the saGga of yoginI-s were there,

some with the faces of dogs, crows, camels, asses,

going a hundred leagues or more

without any purpose at all.

लोकपाल-पुरो.ध्वान्त-धूम-धूम्रे_अभ्र-मन्दिरे

सिद्ध-गन्धर्व-मिथुन-प्रारब्ध-सुरत-उत्सवम् ॥३।२४।२६॥

And as the Regents of the four directions watched,

the Adepts and Choristers coupled in a feast of love,

in the smoky darkness.

स्वर्ग-गीत-स्तव-उन्मत्त-मदन-आक्रान्त-मार्गगम्

अनारत-वहद्-धिष्ण्य-चक्र-लक्षित-पक्षकम् ॥३।२४।२७॥

They heard heavenly songs of praise,

and crazy songs of love,

upon the road.

And they saw meteors marking the moments of the months.

वात-स्कन्ध-निखात-अन्तर्-वहत्-त्रि.पथगा-जलम्

आश्चर्य-आलोकन-व्यग्र-संचरत्-त्रि.दश-अर्भकम् ॥३।२४।२८॥

And in the region of the wind,

as in a ditch flowing,

they saw the sacred river gaGgA,

wonderful to behold,

coursing its way through thirty villages.

.देह-संचरद्-वज्र-चक्र-शूलासि-शक्तिमत्

क्व.चिन् निर्भित्ति भवनम् गायन् नारद-तुम्बरु ॥३।२४।२९॥

Somewhere they saw

mighty thunderbolts, discuses, tridents, and swords at work;

and somewhere they quite clearly saw

tumbaru teaching music to narada*;

मेघ-मार्ग-महा.मेघ-महारम्भ-आकुलम् क्व.चित्

चित्र-न्यस्त-समाकार-मूक-कल्पान्त-वारिदम् ॥३।२४।३०॥

somewhere they saw,

on Cloud Road,

clouds encloud in clouds,

an aggregating multitude,

somehow like a painted likeness of the Cloud of Doomsday;

उत्पतत् कज्जल-अद्रि-इन्द्र-सुन्दर-अम्भो.धरम् क्व.चित्

क्व.चित् कनक-निष्पन्द-कान्त-ताप-अन्त-वारिदम् ॥३।२४।३१॥

somewhere they saw mountains like flying clouds,

lovely as those in indra's heaven,

somewhere;

and somewhere they saw golden, still, fiery.sunset clouds;

क्व.चिद् दिग्-दाह-ताप-आढ्यम् ऋष्यमूक-अम्बुद-अंशुकम्

क्व.चिन् निष्पवन-अम्भोधि-संरम्भम् शून्यता-जलम् ॥३।२४।३२॥

and somewhere clouds of fire,

that were hovering overMount RSyamUka,

sometimes fanning the emptiness of empty ocean, angrily;

क्व.चिद् वात.नदी-प्रौढ=विमान-तृण.पल्लवम्

क्व.चिच् चलद् अलि.व्रात-पृष्ठ=त्वक्-कान्ति.निर्मलम् ॥३।२४।३३॥

and somewhere they saw grass blown by the wind,

looking like SkyCars in the air;

and somewhen saw swarming bees,

with their immaculate many.colored coats;

क्व.चिन् मेरु-नदी-कल्प-वात-धूलि-विधूसरम्

क्व.चिद् विमान-गीर्वाण-प्रभा-चित्र-बल-अङ्गकम् ॥३।२४।३४॥

somehow they saw Mount meru and its river,

grey in the kalpa wind;

somewhere saw the gods, in their radiant beautiful SkyCars;

क्व.चिन् निरम्बर-उन्नृत्त-मातृ-मण्डल-मालितम्

क्व.चिन् नित्यम् नव-क्षीब-क्षुब्ध-योगि.ईस्वरी-गणम् ॥३।२४।३५॥

and somehow saw the naked dance of skanda's garlanded Mothers*;

somewhere also the Company of Yoga Queens, drunk on their booze;

क्व.चिच्_छान्त-समाधि.स्थ-विश्रान्त-मुनि-मालितम्

समम् दूर-अस्त-संरम्भ-साधु-चित्त-मनोहरम् ॥३।२४।३६॥

somewhere saw peaceful Munis,

seated in samAdhi,

garlanded in repose,

daring the danger of Chitta delight;

गायत्_किन्नर-गन्धर्व-सुर-स्त्री-मण्डलम् क्व.चित्

क्व.चित्_स्तब्ध-पुराकीर्णम् वहत्_पुरवरम् क्व.चित् ॥३।२४।३७॥

and singing kiMnara Whatnots

and the gandharva Choristers

and sura Brightling women,

somewhere;

somewhere a bustling city;

even a Royal Capital sometimes:

क्व.चिद् रुद्र-पुर्-आपूर्णम् क्व.चिद् ब्रह्म-महापुरम्

क्व.चिन् माया-कृत=पुरम् क्व.चिद् आगामि-पत्तनम् ॥३।२४।३८॥

sometimes the great Rudra City,

sometimes the City of brahmA;

sometimes the City of mAyA, of increasing population;

sometimes the town of Agama*;

* The Agama-s are scriptures taught by ziva to umA pArvatI, mainly South Indian in origin.

 

क्व.चिद्_भ्रमच्_चन्द्र-सर: क्व.चित्_स्तब्ध-मयम् सर:

क्व.चित्_सरत्_सिद्ध-गणम् क्व.चिद्_इन्दु-कृत-उदयम् ॥३।२४।३९॥

क्व.चित् सूर्य-उदय-मयम् क्व.चिद् रात्रि-तमो-मयम्

क्व.चित् संध्या-अंशु-कपिलम् क्व.चिन् नीहार-धूसरम् ॥३।२४।४०॥

क्व.चिद्_द्_हिम-अभ्र-धवलम् क्व.चिद्_वर्षत्_पयो.धरम्

क्व.चित्_स्थल इव आकाश एव विश्रान्त-लोकपम् ॥३।२४।४१॥

ऊर्ध्व-अधो-गमन-व्यग्र-सुर-असुर-गणम् क्व.चित्

पूर्व-अपर-उत्तरा-याम्य-दिक्-संचार-आकुलम् क्व.चित् ॥३।२४।४२॥

अपि योजन-लक्षाणि क्व.चिद् दुष्.प्राप-भू.धरम्

अविनाशि-तम:-पूर्णम् दृषद्-गर्भ-उपमम् क्व.चित् ॥३।२४।४३॥

अविनाशि-बृहत्-तेज: क्व.चिद् अर्क-अनल-उपमम्

हिमानी-जठर-.शीतलम् क्व.चिच् चन्द्र.आदि-सद्मसु ॥३।२४।४४॥

they saw somewhere meandering moon-lakes;

and somewhere frozen lakes;

somewhen a flock of flying siddha Adepts.

Sometimes they saw the rising of the moon;

sometimes they would see the sunrise,

sometimes the dark of evening;

sometimes a monkey-red sunset,

sometimes only grey drifting mist, somewhen white snow-clouds;

and somewhen pouring rainClouds;

and then sometimes a place that was like Space itself,

at rest,

reposing in its lord.

Above them and below

they saw the Brightling and the Darkling hordes,

sometimes gone east or west or north or south

in their wide wandering:

over a hundred thousand leagues high sometimes,

to unattainable mountains,

that were unbroken darkness, like the heart of stone within;

and vast, inextinguishable fire somewhere, a sun fed by wind;

and somewhere aged cold snowdrifts,

the cooling mountains of the moon;

क्व.चिद् वहत् पुरो.वृत्त=कल्प-वृक्ष=ललता-वनम्

8क्व.चिद् दैत्य-हत-उत्तुङ्ग-प्रपतद् देव-पत्तनम् ॥३।२४।४५॥

somewhen they saw a flying forest, with an ancient Kalpa Tree;

somewhen the ruins of a deva town destroyed by the daitya Demons*.

वैमानिक-निपातेन वह्नि-लेखा-अङ्कितम् क्व.चित्

क्व.चित् केतु-शत-उत्पात-मिथ: संघट्ट-पट्टितम् ॥३।२४।४६॥

They saw descending SkyCars, like separate streaks of light somewhere;

somewhen a hundred meteors rushing together in a crowd.

क्व.चिच्_छुभ-ग्रह-गण-प्रगृहीत-अग्र्य-मण्डलम्

क्व.चिद्_रात्रि-तमो-व्याप्तम् क्व.चिद्_दिवस-भास्वरम् ॥३।२४।४७॥

Somewhen a lucky planet shone brightly in its constellation;

somewhen the evening grew dark;

somewhen the day grew burning bright;

क्व.चिद् उद्गर्जद् अम्भोदम् क्व.चिन् मूकामलाम्बुदम्

वात-अवकीर्ण-शुक्ल-अभ्र-खण्ड-पुष्प-उत्तरम् क्व.चित् ॥३।२४।४८॥

somewhere a thundering storm.cloud;

somewhere a mute white rain.cloud;

and a wind-filled, bright cloud,

fragmenting somehow into a rain of flowers.

क्व.चिद् अत्यन्त-नि:शून्यम् अवदातम् अनन्तरम्

आनन्द-मृदु-शान्त-अच्छम् ज्ञस्य_इव हृदयम् ततम् ॥३।२४।४९॥

Sometimes all was boundless‑empty, crystalline, constant,

as gentle as joy, as pure as peace:—

like the vast Heart of a Knower of truth.

शुक्र-वाहन-भेक-ओघै: क्व.चिद् गल-कृत-आरवम्

शून्यता-वारि-वलितम् क्षेत्रम् आकाश-वासिनाम् ॥३।२४।५०॥

Somewhen the throng of SkyCars

was like open-throated frogs croaking in the waters of emptiness,

in the field of the SpaceDwellers.

मयूर-हेम-चूड-आदि-पक्षिभि: क्व.चिद् आवृतम्

विद्याधरीणाम् देवीनाम् वाहनैर् विहित-आस्पदै: ॥३।२४।५१॥

Sometimes it was overspread with gold-crested peacocks,

the SkyCars of magical vidyAdharI goddesses chasing each other.

क्व.चिद् अभ्र-अन्तर-उन्नृत्यद्-गुह-मायूर-मण्डलम्

क्व.चिद् अग्नि-शुकै: श्यामम् शाद्वलानाम् इव स्थलम् ॥३।२४।५२॥

Sometimes they saw a maNDala of skanda's dancing peacocks;

and sometimes fiery parrots on the dark and grassy tablelands;

‑52‑

 

क्व.चित्_प्रेतेश-महिष-महिम्ना वामन-अम्बुदम्

क्व.चिद्_अश्वैस्_तृण-ग्राम-शङ्का-ग्रस्तासित-अम्बुदम् ॥३।२४।५३॥

somewhen they saw a SkyCar drawn by the DeathLord's own buffalo;

and somewhen horses wandering to graze on the village grasslands;

क्व.चिद् देव-पुर-व्याप्तम् क्व.चिद् दैत्य-पुर-अन्वितम्

अन्योन्य_अप्राप्य-नगरम् नग-रन्ध्र-कर-अनिलम् ॥३।२४।५४॥

sometimes they saw the cities of the gods, sometimes the cities of the demons, separated by a chasm where a great wind blew;

क्व.चित् कुलाचल-आकार-नृत्यद्-भैरव-भासुरम्

क्व.चित् =पक्ष-शैलेन्द्र-समनृत्यद्-विनायकम् ॥३।२४।५५॥

somewhere the fearsome bhairava-s,

as huge as mountains,

danced their dance;

and somewhere winged garuDa-s danced their dance,

like mountains in the air;

‑55‑

 

क्व.चिद् घर्घर-वात.ओघ-पक्ष-प्रोड्डीन-पर्वतम्

क्व.चिद् गन्धर्व-नगर-सुर.स्त्री-वृन्द-बन्धुरम् ॥३।२४।५६॥

sometimes also stone mountains flew,

multitudes whistling in the wind;

and somewhen they saw gandharva City,

and it was filled with a throng of curvaceous Brightling women;

क्व.चिद् वहद्-गिरि-ध्वस्त-वृक्ष-लक्ष-उच्छ्रित-अम्बुदम्

क्व.चिन् माया-आकृत-आकाश-नलिनी-जल-शीतलम् ॥३।२४।५७॥

and somewhere flying mountains fell to earth,

smashing the trees below,

raising a cloud of dust,

a sky-lotus formed somewhere by mAyA...

क्व.चिद् इन्दु-कर-आकृष्टि-शीतला-आह्लाद-मारुतम्

क्व.चित् तप्त-अनिल-आदग्ध-द्रुम-पर्वत-वारिदम् ॥३।२४।५८॥

sometimes the moonbeams made the wind

into a cool refreshing breeze;

sometimes the wind heated the clouds

and burned trees on the mountain-tops;

क्व.चिद् अत्यन्त-संशान्त-वाताद् एकान्त-निर्ध्वनि

क्व.चित् पर्वत-तुल्य-अभ्र-शिखा-कूट-शत-उदयम् ॥३।२४।५९॥

क्व.चित् प्रावृड्-भव-उन्मत्त-घन-अभ्र-रव-घर्घरम्

क्व.चित् सुर-असुर-गण-प्रवृत्-तरण-दुर्.गमम् ॥३।२४।६०॥

sometimes

there was a wind of peace, a lonesome silence;

and somewhere

it was a cloud that crowned a range of a hundred mountains; somewhere

the rains arose, thick rumbling clouds;

somewhere

the Brightlings and Darklings gave battle to each other,

warring furiously in the clouds.

क्व.चिद् व्योम-अब्जिनी-हंसी-स्वन-आहूत-अब्ज-वाहनम्

क्व.चिन् मन्दाकिनी-तीरनलिनी-लुण्ठक-अनिलम् ॥३।२४।६१॥

स्व.शरीरेण गङ्गा.आदि-सरिताम् सन्निधान-:

प्रोड्डीण-मत्स्य-मकर-कुलीर-अम्बुज-कूर्मकम् ॥३।२४।६२॥

पाताल.-अर्क-जनित-भू-च्-छाया-काक-चोपनै:

क्व.चित् सर्ग-अनिल-आधूत-माया-कुसुम-काननम्

पतत्_पुष्प-हिमासार-त्रसद् वैमानिक-अङ्गनम् ॥३।२४।६४॥

Somewhere they saw a lotus-pond in the sky,

and swans drrifting there, crying their calls of love;

somewhere they saw the heavenly gaGgA, with its aromatic lotuses: the very form of gaGgA and its tributary rivers,

filled with flying fish, alligators, and tortoises—

within the clouds.

And they saw the Sun sinking down to Netherworld,

as Earth's shadow covered it like a dark crow, somewhen;

and somewhen the eclipse of the moon.

Somewhere they saw the Garden of mAyA Illusion flying in the wind, with trembling snow-flowers.

जगत्.त्रय-अन्तर-गत-भूत-संचयम्

विलङ्घ्य तद्वर-ललने खम् उच्चकैर्

महीतलम् पुनर् अपि गन्तुम् उद्यते ॥३।२४।६५॥

It was like a cloud of mosquitoes buzzing about

the hollow of a sacred fig tree, when they beheld

the variety of the Three Worlds! But they ended

their sport among the clouds, and returned again to earth.

**DC - here I see very nice comparison - ornament, which fell from the body of a goddess, become heaven for someone, and dark cavern of horrible tajas of some bad siddhas, I suppose, is a hell for someone else... **AS->It is continued description of their surroundings. This is the translation: The ornaments of the heavenly ladies were scattered about as they were hurrying answering the calls by their gods; the dark (tAmasa) harsh powers of ordinary (non enlightened) siddhas were visible in it. Most part of the above description of the heavens, consists of the various appearances of the clouds, and bears resemblance to Shelly's poetical description of them. All this is expressed by one word in the Cloud-Messenger of Kálidása, where the cloud is said to be "Káma rupa" or assuming any form at pleasure.
