vasiSTha has kept this story just for you and me and rAma.

there are two higher paths, rAma, suitable for your fulfilment

~sv.2 In the case of those who have taken birth in this world, two possibilities exist for the attainment of liberation.

#vRj -> #apavRj -> #apavarga-: —¶mw [*apavarga Fulfilment], completion, end (e.g. paJca.apavarga, coming to an end in five days) the emancipation of the soul from bodily existence NS1.1.2, exemption from further transmigration; final beatitude; - #svargApavarga – Heaven & Fulfilment. {Dying o&r Living}

the first of these is to hear the teaching of a guru

and practice it step-by-step, in this o&r other births,

is known to be a means granting empowerment.

*jd. when you study this vAsiShTha.shAstra your guru is vasiShTha

एकः तावत् as.for the first of these गुरु-प्रोक्तात् after guru-teaching अनुष्ठानात् undertaking शनैः शनैः step by slow step जन्मना जन्मभिः वा अपि in one birth or many सिद्धि-दः granting empowerment समुदाहृतः is declared.

.

#sthA -> #anusthA -> #anuSThAna-m carrying out, undertaking; doing, performance; religious practice; acting in conformity to; #anuSThAni f. performance, action

~vlm.3. And there are two methods of gaining these objects; the one being the observance of the instructions of the preceptor, which gradually leads one to his perfection in the course of one or reiterated births.

~sv.3 The first is: treading the path indicated by the master, the seeker gradually reaches the goal of liberation.

~vlm.4. The second is the attainment of knowledge by intuition, or by self culture of a partly intelligent being; and this is as the obtaining of a fruit falling from heaven.

~sv.4 The second is: self-knowledge literally drops into one's lap, as it were, and there is instant enlightenment.

*AS. The last word is
समश्नुवन्ति samaznuvanti and should mean "eat".
I don't see what to make of samazruvanti!
Thus, I agree with KG and AB.
I derive a meaning rather different from yours:
O fortunate one, listen to the story (and benefit from it) just as people with great experience, during their final life (before liberation), with the flood of auspicious and inauspicious events subsided,  partake of pure discernment (viveka), like eating a fruit fallen from sky.
The implication is that people who are about to be liberated acquire viveka without effort; and you being fortunate, are getting to hear this story, so listen to it!

listen, dear boy, to a tale of

those Great Experients who've overcome the mess of their past acts

of good and bad--as.if a fruit

*sv.3 The first is: treading the path indicated by the master, the seeker gradually reaches the goal of liberation.

*VLMitra.p.5 Hear now about the attainment of intuitive knowledge, which is like getting fruit fallen from the sky, from an old tale which I will now relate.

Listen, dear boy, how those of great experience

have removed a crowd of obstacles, pure and impure.

Out.of their viveka Discernment, its fruit falls

from the sky, and they come to their final perfection.

zRNu subhaga kathAm mahA.anubhAvA vyapagata.pUrva.zubha.azubha.argala.oghA: kha.patita.phalavat.param vivekam  carama.bhavA vimalam samazruvanti

*vlm.6. Hear the happy and holy story, which removes the fetters of our good and evil deeds, and which the last born men (now living), must taste with a zest for their enlightenment, as others relish a fruit fallen from heaven for their entertainment.

*AS. The last word is समश्नुवन्ति samaznuvanti and should mean "eat". I don't see what to make of samazruvanti! Thus, I agree with KG and AB. {KG/AB has <samuzruvanti>; VLM has <samazruvanti> only TPD has <samaznuvanti>, which I agree is the better reading. jd}.

The implication is that people who are about to be liberated acquire viveka without effort; and you being fortunate, are getting to hear this story, so listen to it!

listen, dear boy, to a tale of those Great Experients who've overcome the mess of their past acts of good and bad**as.if a fruit

fell from the sky: windfall? Skyfall from their vive

ka Discernment. In their last days they reach perfection.
