y3015-30 **vlm.lIlA and Saraswati (Padma’s body on the shrine) — Queen lIlA and King Padma lead an idyllic life, but as they age lIlA fears he might die first, in which case her own life would be intolerable. She does #tapas to Goddess Saraswati and obtains the boon to have her husband’s spirit always with her. She and the goddess astral travel and time travel to see the couple’s prior life as simple brAhmaNas when her husband sees a lavish royal hunting party, creating a desire in him to possess the wealth of an empire. That desire manifests after King Padma dies and the queen and goddess see another reality in the deceased king’s mind. He is now King Viduratha ruling a vast empire with a second lIlA as his wife. Here the Goddess and lIlA speak of other lives, in one of the "jAtaka" stories of YV, recounting previous births.

वज्राङ्गसाराद्ब्रह्माण्डकुड्यान्निबिडमण्डलात्

कोटियोजनसंपुष्टात्कथं ते निर्गतेऽबले ॥1॥

How did they get out?

From the Essence of the Thunderbolt,

from the shell of the Cosmic Egg,

from that compact sphere,

from that expanse of a million leagues,—

how did they break out, without brute force?

 

 

vasiSTha said:  

 

क्व ब्रह्माण्डम् क्व तत्-भित्ति: क्व_अत्र_असौ वज्र-सारता

किल_अवश्यम् स्थिते देव्यौ_अन्तःपुर-वर.अम्बरे ॥३।२८।२॥

तस्मिन्नेव गिरिग्रामे तस्मिन्नेवालयाम्बरे

ब्रह्मण: वसिष्ठाख्य आस्वादयति राजताम् ॥3॥

Where is this brahma-Egg?

where is the shell of That?

where now is its adamantine strength?

O, clearly, the two goddesses were within the space of the anta:pura:

yet in that very mountain-town,

there in that very sky-abode of the brAhmaNa vasiSTha,

who imagined* himself a king.

तमेव मण्डपाकाशकोणकं शून्यमात्रकम्

चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तं भूतलं सोऽनुभूतवान् ॥4॥

In that very tomb.space-corner,

consisting of emptiness,

they experienced the entire world with its four encircling oceans.

 

आकाशात्मनि भूपीठं तस्मिंस्तद्राजपत्तनम्

राजसद्मानुभवति सा चाप्यरुन्धती ॥5॥

In the Space-Self,

seated upon the EarthThrone there in the royal city,

in the royal palace,

he is with his arundhatI.

 

लीलाभिधाना सा जाता तया ज्ञप्तिरर्चिता

ज्ञप्त्या सह समुल्लङ्घ्य खमाश्चर्यमनोहरम् ॥6॥

And one born with the name lIlA the Lovely,

who worshipped the Goddess,

flew with her,

a _jJapti Image

in wondrously delightful space.

 

प्रादेशमात्रे नभसि सा तत्रैव गृहोदरे

ब्रह्माण्डान्तरमासाद्य गिरिग्रामकमन्दिरे ॥7॥

In the region of spacious sky,

while there indeed inside the house in that mountainside village,

she was within the Cosmic Egg.

 

ब्रह्माण्डात्परिनिर्गत्य स्वगृहे स्थितिमाययौ

स्वप्नात्स्वप्नान्तरं प्राप्य यथा तल्पगत: पुमान् ॥8॥

Emerging from the Cosmic Egg, she found herself in her own home,

as.if awakened from a dream,

—or entering another dream,—

a bed-traveling human.

 

प्रतिभामात्रमेवैतत्सर्वमाकाशमात्रकम्

ब्रह्माण्डं संसारो कुड्यादि दूरता ॥9॥

But all this was just Pratibhâ

Imagining in the Space-sky:—

no Cosmic Egg, no _saMsAra,

no obstruction,

no near,

no far.

 

 

स्वचित्तमेव कचति तयोस्तादृङ्मनोहरम्

वासनामात्रसोल्लेखं क्व ब्रह्माण्डं क्व संसृति: ॥10॥

When it is their own _citta that affects such a shocking show,

made entirely of _vAsanAs,

tell me where is the Cosmic Egg?

or else, where is the _saMsAra?

 

निरावरणम्_एव_इदम् ज्ञप्ति-आकाशम्_अनन्तकम्

किंचित्.स्व.चित्तेन-उन्नीतम् स्पन्द-युक्त्या_इव मारुत: ॥11॥

This boundless knowing-space becomes un.veiled,

up.led somehow by your own affective citta,

just as the winds arise with spanda Vibration.

 

चिदाकाशमजं शान्तं सर्वत्रैव हि सर्वदा

चित्त्वाज्जगदिवाभाति स्वयमेवात्मनात्मनि ॥12॥

cit.Space,

unborn, peaceful,

is now everywhere, and always.

From this _cit.ness, the world as.if shines forth

itself by the self in the Self.

 

येन बुद्धं तु तस्यैतदाकाशादपि शून्यकम्

बुद्धं येन तस्यैतद्वज्रसाराचलोपमम् ॥13॥

For one who understands,

all This is emptier than Space.

But for one who does not understand, This is an adamantine mountain.

 

गृह एव यथा स्वप्ने नगरं भाति भासुरम्

तथा_एतदसदेव_अन्तश्चिद्धातौ भाति भास्वरम् ॥14॥

In this house,

just as

in a dream a city appears clearly,

just so

the unSuch shines brightly here within the _cit.Consciousness=ground.

 

यथा मरौ जलम् बुद्धम् कटकत्वम् हेमनि

असत् सद् इव भाति_इदम् तथा दृश्यत्वम् आत्मनि ॥15॥

As in a desert mirage cool water is apprehended;—

as braceletness in gold,—

what is not.So, appearing as.if-So, is This.

Thus there is perception in the Self.

 

एवमाकथयन्त्यौ ते ललने ललिताकृती

गृहान्निर्ययतुर्बाह्यं चारुचंक्रमणक्रमै: ॥16॥

So they went-on dialoguing sportively,

acting just like two courtesans;

and they sauntered from the house:

mark their dainty footsteps!

 

 

अदृश्ये ग्रामलोकेन प्रेक्षमाणे पुरोगिरिम्

चुम्बिताकाशकुहरं संस्पृष्टादित्यमण्डलम् ॥17॥

But they would not be noticed by the townsfolk.

...

Those two ladies saw the face of the mountain, caressed by the Sun,

kiss the Cave of Space.

 

नानावर्णाखिलोत्फुल्लविचित्रवननिर्मलम्

नानानिर्झरनिर्ह्रादकूजद्वनविहंगमम् ॥18॥

All differently colored, the blossoms sparkle within a forest park.

A waterfall cannot outsing all of the curtly chirping birds.

 

विचित्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जपिञ्जराम्बुदमण्डलम्

स्वभ्रमच्छगुलुच्छाग्रविश्रान्तखगसारसम् ॥19॥

Clusters of blossoms, clouds of white and gold create

a hemisphere of white bouquets with golden hearts, a fair cloud;

and crystalline _sArasa Cranes reposing in _guluccha trees.

 

सारवञ्जुलविस्तारगुप्ताखिलसरित्तटम्

असमाप्तशिलाश्वभ्रलतावर्तनमारुतम् ॥२०॥

The river has its groves of ungrieving _azoka trees

spreading their safety down the slopes to its banks;

and down the endless chasm pour blustering vine-tossing winds.

पुष्पाग्रपिहिताकाशकोशकुड्यकवारिदम्

पतद्दीर्घसरित्स्रोतःस्फुरन्मुक्ताकलापकम् ॥२१॥

The flower-tips are hidden Space ensheathed by wallish clouds.

Below,

the water is a long vibrating mass of pearls flowing downstream.

 

चलद्वृक्षवनव्यूहवातवेल्लिसरित्तटम्

नानावनाकुलोपान्तच्छायासततशीतलम् ॥22॥

The trees tremble as the wind blows through the forest,

shaking the vines along the river-bank.

On many banks in many forests the shade is not any more cooling.

 

अथ ते ललने तत्र तदा ददृशतु: स्वयम्

तं गिरिग्रामकं व्योम्न: स्वर्गखण्डमिव च्युतम् ॥23॥

Next,

those two ladies, sporting there,

saw by itself that mountain-town, here in the sky,

to be a piece dropped-from the edge of _svarga Heaven.

 

रटत्प्रणालीपटलं पूर्णपुष्करिणीगणम्

द्विजै: कुचकुचै: कूजत्स्वलीलाश्वभ्रकच्छकम् ॥24॥

There are many chattering streams,

telling of valleys full of hordes of flowers,

and lovebirds crooning "cootchy-coo" in their pleasure-caves.

 

गच्छद्गोवृन्दहुंकारकरालाखिलकुञ्जकम्

कुञ्जगुल्मकखण्डाढ्यं सच्छायघनशाद्वलम् ॥25॥

A home-going herd of cattle lowing

"Hooommm!"

overflows the thicket-patches in the great arbor,

and all of the meadowlands shaded by clouds.

 

दुष्प्रवेषार्ककिरणं दृषन् नीहारधूसरम्

उदग्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जजटालं विशिखान्तरम् ॥26॥

The sunlight rattles at the gates,

feeling the foggy dust of frost.

We're in a grove of flame-crested Fig trees that gather about a glade,

like braids about a balded head.

 

शिलाकुहरवाःस्फालप्रोच्चलन्मुक्तनिझरै:

स्मारिताचलनिर्धूतक्षीरोदकजलश्रीयम् ॥३।२८।२७॥

Woe-moaning mountain caves echo waterfalls,

scattering cascades of pearls—

like the exploring ChurningStick, drilling the Milk Ocean.

 

फल.माल्य-महाभार=भासुरैर् अजिर-द्रुमै:

आनीय पुष्प-संभारम् तिष्ठद्बिर् इव संकुलम् ॥28॥

Bearing glorious burdens, garlands of flowers, and heaped hills of fruit,

the courtyard-trees gather to make their offerings,

all in a crowd.

 

तरत्तरङ्गझांकारकारिमारुतकम्पितै:

कीर्णपुष्पसमावृष्टं द्रुमैरपि रसाकुलै: ॥३।२८।२९॥

Murmuring, crossing the waves with a "jhoomm",

the wind fluttered and shook the trees,

scattering flowers soaked with rain, from trees bursting with their sap.

 

अशङ्कित-शिला.कूट=स्रवद्==अम्ब्व्.इन्दु-"टं".कृतै:

किंचित्.कृत-रवम् गुप्तैर् अशङ्कै: शङ्कितै: खगै: ॥३०॥

Water flowed-down from the moonlit mountain crest,

a tum.tum-trickle that soon became a roar that scared the birds

in the safety of their nests.

 

उत्फाललहरीश्रान्तसीकरास्वादनाकुलै:

नद्यामुडुपरावर्तवृत्तिभिर्विहगैर्वृतम् ॥31॥

Wearied with galloping,

the waves let loose their spray to the bright flock that hovers over the river:

a burst of birds sipping the spray like a shower of shooting stars.

 

उत्तालतालविश्रान्तकाकालोकनशङ्कितै:

बालै: प्रगोपितामिक्षाखण्डं जीर्णस्वभुक्तकै: ॥३।२८।३२॥

Crows rest atop the tall _tAla palms,

while fearful boys, below, hide their leftover milk candies,

for their later, safer enjoyment.

 

पुष्पशेखरसंभारवसनग्रामबालकम्

खर्जुरनिम्बजम्बीरगहनोपान्तशीतलम् ॥३३॥

A village boy with flowers in his hair,

dressed in his finest,

goes wandering in a cooling grove of date, and Neem, and citron trees.

 

क्षौमाग्रहस्ताम्बरया मञ्जरीपूर्णकर्णया

क्षुत्क्षीणयाक्रान्तरथ्यं ग्रामकीटककान्तया ॥34॥

Her hand holding the tip of her garment,

wearing a flower on her ear,

sniffling and sneezing,

the town rat-lady walks down the highway.

 

सरित्तरङसंघट्टसंरावाश्रुतसंकथम्

कर्मजाड्यघनत्रासवाञ्छितैकान्तसंस्थितम् ॥35॥

दधिलिप्तास्यहस्तांसै: स्निग्धपुष्पलताधरै:

नग्नैर्गोमयपङ्काङ्गैर्बालैराकुलचत्वरम् ॥36॥

Their conversation was drowned in the roaring waves of the river.

They spoke

of the farmhands loafing quietly, thinking "work's a terror"; —

of a group of four boys with curd-smeared fingertips,

wearing flowers of friendship,

otherwise naked,

their limbs besplattered with cowdung.

 

तीरशाद्वलवल्लीनां दोलान्दोलनकारिभि:

तरङ्गैर्वाह्यमानस्य लेखिकाङ्कितसैकतम् ॥37॥

The bank-grass-creepers are tossed back-and-forth by the waves,

as.if by the swinging of a swing,

and each swing scratches its mark in the sand.

 

दधि-क्षीर-घन-आमोद-मत्त-मन्थर-मक्षिकम्

काम-भुक्त-अर्थता-उद्बाष्प-जर्जराबल-बालकम् ॥38॥

The mosquitoes fly slowly, drunk on the thick aroma of milk and curds,

and the children cry, since they're too sick to take their food.

 

गोमयासिक्तवलयकरनारीकृतक्रुधम्

धम्मिल्लवलनाव्यग्रत्रस्तस्त्रीविहसज्जनम् ॥39॥

Their hands braceleted with cowdung, the women grumble.

Ringed in braids, they feel no fear,

not those very good women of the sky-village.

 

दान्तपुष्पच्छदोत्सन्नपतत्ककुदवायसम्

गृहरथ्यागणद्वारकीर्णक्रूरकुरण्टकम् ॥३।२८।४०॥

The flowerbeds are spread with leaves

scattered by squawking mountain-crows;

the roadways and the houses are,

on every door,

strewn with red and yellow oleander blossoms.

गृहपार्श्वस्थितश्वभ्रकुञ्जै: कुसुमितप्रभै:

प्रत्यहं प्रातरागुल्फमाकीर्णकुसुमाजिरम् ॥३।२८।४१॥

The mountain houses, caves, and groves

abounded everywhere with flowers—

_kusuma blossoms, ankle-deep!

 

चरच्चमरसारङ्गजालजङ्गलखण्डकम्

गुञ्जानिकुञ्जसंजातशष्पसुप्तमृगार्भकम् ॥42॥

With tails wagging like chowrie whisks,

in one part of the bush,

the deer roam,

while in a grove of _guJjA,

tiny fawns dream of sprouting grass.

 

एकान्तसुप्तवत्सैककर्णस्पन्दास्तमक्षिकम्

गोपोच्छिष्टीकृतदधिस्वसृक्किस्पन्दिमक्षिकम् ॥43॥

Sleeping apart,

with his left ear slapping mosquitoes,

is an old bull;

and the cowherd boys are slurping mouthfuls of curds,

with the hissing "sssserrrkk!" of bloodsucking mosquitoes.

 

समस्तसद्मसंक्षीणमक्षिकाक्षिप्तमाक्षिकम्

फुल्लाशोकद्रुमोद्यानकृतलाक्षिकमन्दिरम् ॥44॥

The place is a buzz of honey-sucking flies and bees,

in a lac cabin within a budding grove of Ungrieving _azoka trees.

 

सीकरासारमरुता नित्यार्द्रविकचद्रुवम्

कदम्बमुकुलप्रोतसमस्तच्छादननृणाम् ॥45॥

A shower,

streamed by the wind,

blows from that everblooming tree

orange _kadamba buds

that fall

onto the meadowland below.

 

प्रतिकृत्तलताफुल्लकेतकोत्करपाण्डुरम्

वहत्प्राणालपटलीरणद्गुरुगुरारवम् ॥46॥

Vines entwine a bright white jasmine tree.

Water that trickles down the roof bursts from the eaves, a gurgling roar.

 

वातायनगुहानिर्यत्सौधविश्रान्तवारिदम्

पूर्णपुष्करिणीपङ्क्तिपूर्णराजपृथूत्तरम् ॥47॥

Surrendered by the wind,

a cloud rests on a rooftop.

In the pond,

the lotuses are gathered like the primping court nobility.

 

नीरन्ध्रविटपिच्छायाशीतलामलशाद्वलम्

सर्वशष्पाग्रवार्बिन्दुप्रतिबिम्बिततारवम् ॥48॥

The shoots are sprouting shade, to cool the grass below.

Slipping dewdrops

tremble at the tips of grass-blades,

and constellate like mating stars.

 

अनारतपतत्फुल्लहिमवर्षसितालयम्

विचित्रमञ्जरीपुष्पपत्रसत्फलपादपम् ॥49॥

The grove forever drops snowflake-blossoms to cool our abode;

budding leaves and flowers shower

from the many-marvelous SuchFruit* Tree.

* Here, the _sat.phala Tree is the Such.Fruit, and the not the red-flowered pomegranate [as MW defines the word, since its flowers are said to be white, like hima-varSa snow-flakes —nor is it the GoodFruit tree, with white blossoms in profusion, which I cannot identify otherwise—but in this translation it is a SuchFruit tree, mothering buds even as it snows-down _himAlaya-white sattvic petals. jd

 

गृह.कक्ष-अन्तर्.आलीन=मेघ.सुप्त-चिरण्टिकम्

सौध.स्थ-मेघ-विद्युद्भिर् अन्.आदेय-प्रदीपकम् ॥50॥

The clouds cling to the house

like an unmarried daughter cowering in her dark room,

while lightning flashes from the roof in lieu of a lamp.

 

कन्दरानिलभांकारघनघुंघुममण्डपम्

सरच्चकोरहारीतहरिणीहारिमन्दिरम् ॥३।२८।५१॥

The cavern-wind is booming through the raincloud-gloomy tomb.

Thieving pigeons and flocking partridges rest on yellowish-charming roofs.

 

उन्निद्र-कन्दल-उद्वान्त-मांसल-आमोद-मन्थरै:

मरुद्भिर् मन्दम् आयातुम् आरब्धैर् लोल-पल्लवम् ॥52॥

लावक-आलप-लीलायाम्_आलीन-ललना-गणम्

कोक-कोकिल-काकोल-कोलाहल-समाकुलम् ॥53॥

With slow-moving breezes,

thick with the heady aroma of white profuse kandala blooms,

softly the leaves have got to shivering,

while wanton girls crouch on the grass,

playfully cooing like cuckoos,

or squawking like a flock of crows.

 

शालतालतमालाब्जनीलतत्फलमालिनम्

वल्लीवलयविन्यासविलासवलितद्रुमम् ॥54॥

The _zAla trees and the tall fanpalms are wrappped in clinging creepers,

like the arms of a girl,

among dark

_tamAla-s, and blue lotuses.

 

आलोलपल्लवलतावलितायनाना=

मुत्फुल्लकन्दलशिलीन्ध्रसुगन्धितानाम्

तालीतमालदलताण्डवमण्डपाना=

मारामफुल्लकुसुमद्रुमशीतलानाम् ॥55॥

They traded talk:—

of trembling shoots in vine-adorned pathways;

of the sweet-smelling plantains,

of _kandala Coral trees,

of tapering _tamAla-s and palm-dark leafiness where birds dwell,

a pleasure-grove,

cool,

with blossoming oleander trees;

 

साराववारिचलनाकुलगोकुलाना=

मानीलसस्यकुसुमस्थलशोभितानाम्

तीरद्रुमप्रकरगुप्तसरिद्रयाणां

नीरन्ध्रपुष्पितलताग्रवितानकानाम् ॥56॥

of the trickle of rainwater in the trough,

of the cattle-call to the cowbarn;

of blue grass and oleanders decorating the tableland;

of the river,

half-hidden by the trees on its bank,

bearing scattered petals dropped from clinging vines;

 

उद्यानकुन्दमकरन्दसुगन्धितानां

गन्धान्धषट्पदकुलान्तरिताम्बुजानाम्

सौन्दर्यतर्जितपुरन्दरमन्दिराणां

राजीवराजिरजसारुणिताम्बराणाम् ॥57॥

of gardens with sweet-smelling oleander and jasmine

where, blind to their perfume, the bees lurk among lotuses;

of beautiful antique places, temples, and houses;

of red streaks in a sky painted by the sun of dusk and dawn;

 

रंहोवहद्गिरिनदीरवघर्घराणां

कुन्दावदातजलदद्युतिभासुराणाम्

सौधस्थितोल्लसितफुल्ललतालयानां

लीलावलोल कलकण्ठविहङ्गमानाम् ॥58॥

of gurgling melodies from hurried, churning mountain rivers;

of jasmine.blossom-white clouds, brilliantly radiant;

of a mansion's pleasure-garden,

with its bright blooms, the abode of flowering vines,

while playing doves are hovering above.

 

उल्लासिकौसुमदलास्तरणस्थयूनाम्

आपादमावलितममाल्यविलासिनीनाम्

सर्वत्र सुन्दरनवाङ्कुरदन्तुराणां

शोभोल्लसद्वरलताकुलमार्गणानाम् ॥59॥

Beneath trees gleaming with flowers are youths sitting in boats,

arrayed from head to foot, all over, in seductive garlands;—

and its beautiful new shoots

are teeth for the seeking and circling, catching, and clinging vine

that slinks toward the tree.

 

संजातकोमललतोत्पलसंकुलानां

तिष्ठत्पयोदपटसंवलितालयानाम्

नीहारहारहरितस्थलविश्रुतानां

सौदस्थमेघतडिदाकुलिताङ्गनानाम् ॥60॥

They spoke of vines creeping among the crowds of bright blue lotuses;

of neighboring houses resting under a shawl of cloud;

and the fog and frost,

as the foothills boom, and lightning crackles on the rooftops,

and the townsfolk hug each-other;

 

नीलोत्पलोल्लसितसौरसुन्दराणां

हुंकारहारिहरितोन्मुखगोकुलानां

विश्रब्धमुग्धमृगसारगृहाजिराणाम्

उन्नृत्यबर्हिघनसीकरनिर्झराणाम् ॥61॥

of blue lotuses unsheathing under the looming sun;

of the low-hooming hungry brown cows looking for the barn;

of trusting deer in the deer-yard,

untroubled by the sound of peacocks prancing in the showers of a waterfall;

 

सौगन्ध्यमत्तपवनाहतविक्लवानां

वप्रौषधिज्वलनविस्मृतदीपकानाम्

कोलाहलाकुलकुलायकुलाकुलानां

कुल्याकुलाकलकलाश्रुतसंकथानाम् ॥62॥

of the sweet smell of his flowers, beaten by the drunken Lord of the Wind;—of herbs spreading their smoke beside a now-unattended oil-lamp;

of the hullaballoo come from the cackling clucking families

(drowned by the waterfall).

 

मुक्ताफलप्रकरसुन्दरबिन्दुपात-

शीताखिलद्रुमलतातृणपल्लवानाम्

लक्ष्मीमनस्तमितपुष्पविकाशभाजां

शक्नोति : कलयितुं गिरिमन्दिराणाम् ॥63॥

Like pearls,

the multitude of dewdrops,

one-by-one,

fall from the cooling trees to splash-upon the vines and glade;

and what strange delight might _lakSmI hold in her treasury—

what did _sarasvatI and _lIlA not see in that mountain home?

ब्रह्माण्डात्परिनिर्गत्य स्वगृहे स्थितिमाययौ

स्वप्नात्स्वप्नान्तरं प्राप्य यथा तल्पगत: पुमान् ॥३।२८।८॥

प्रतिभामात्रमेवैतत्सर्वमाकाशमात्रकम्

ब्रह्माण्डं संसारो कुड्यादि दूरता ॥३।२८।९॥

Oh, certainly situate, were the two goddesses –

antaHpura-varAmbare

in the space of the Antahpura.

**vlm.3.28.2. Vasishtha replied:--Where is the world and where is its support or solidity? They were all situated in the region within the minds of the goddesses.

**sv.3.28.2 VASISTHA replied: O Rama, where is universe, where are galaxies, where are barriers?

Where is the Cosmic Egg? where is

the shell of That? where now is this

brahmaNa: sa vasiSTha-Akhya: – the Brâhmana called Vasishtha —

AsvAdayati rAjatAm – imagines his Kingship.

 

**vlm.3.28.3. They saw in it the hilly tract, where the Bráhmana Vasishtha had his abode and his desire of royalty, (pictured in in their minds).

catuH-samudra-paryantam – four-oceans-embracing –

bhUtalam so anubhUtavAn – the Earth was experienced —

 

**vlm.4. They saw in a corner of it the deserted mansion of the Bráhman, and they saw in it the surface of the earth stretching to the seas. (i. e. in their mental view).

**sv.3.28.4 3-4 The two ladies remained in the queen's inner apartment.

 

In that very tomb-space-corner,

consisting of emptiness, they

experienced the entire world

with its four encircling oceans. --4-

And one born with the name lIlA the Lovely,

who worshipped the Goddess,

flew with her,

in wondrously delightful space.

**vlm.7. It was in the mansion situated in that hilly village, that she beheld the world placed within the space of a span of her mind.

**sv.3.28.7 5-8 It was there that the holy man Vasistha was ruling as king Viduratha; it was he who was king Padma before.

In the region of spacious sky,

while there indeed inside the house,

in that mountainside village,

brahmANDAt parinirgatya

From the Cosmic Egg having emerged –

svagRhe sthitim Ayayau

in her own home situate became –

yathA svapnAt

as from a dream –

svapna-antaram prApya

getting into another dream –

talpa-gata: pumAn

a bed-going man.

 

**vlm.8. Having come out of her vision of the world, she found herself seated in her house, as one finds himself lying in his own bed, after his rambling from one dream to another.

**sv.3.28.8 5-8 It was there that the holy man Vasistha was ruling as king Viduratha; it was he who was king Padma before.

 

brahmANDAtparinirgatya svagRhe sthitimAyayau |

svapnAtsvapnAntaraM prApya yathA talpagata: pumAn ||3|28|8||

 

Emerging from the Cosmic Egg,

she came again to her own home,

like someone in her bed, moving

This was all just Pratibhâ Imagination/Radiance

entirely Space-only

no Cosmic Egg,

na saMsAraH

no samsAra

na kuDya-Adi

no obstruction/house

na dUratA

no distance —

 

**vlm.3.28.9. All that she saw was mere vision and void; there was no world nor earth, nor a house nor the distance thereof.

**sv.3.28.9 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

na brahmANDaM na saMsAro na kuDyAdi na dUratA ||3|28|9||

 

But all this was just Pratibhâ

Imagining in the Space-sky:—

no Cosmic Egg, no Samsâra,

no obstruction, no near, no far.

where the Samsâra?

saMsRti = incipient saMsAra -

 

**vlm.3.28.10. It was the mind which showed them these images, as it presents the objects of our desire to our view; or else there was neither any world nor earth in actuality.

**sv.3.28.10 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

vAsanAmAtrasollekhaM kva brahmANDaM kva saMsRti: ||3|28|10||

 

When it is one's own citta that

manifests such a shocking show,

made entirely of Vâsanâs,

tell me, where is the Cosmic Egg?

nirAvaraNam eva idaM

un-veiled indeed is this

jJapty-AkAzam anantakam

boundless-ish knowing-space

kiMcit.svacittena unnItaM

up-led somehow by your own-citta

spanda-yuktyA iva mArutaH

as the winds are conjoined with Spanda Vibration —

 

**vlm.3.28.11. The sphere of intelligence is infinite, and without any covering; and being agitated by the powers of one's intellect, it presents all the objects of nature to his view, as the sky when agitated by heat produces the winds.

**sv.3.28.11 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

 

nirAvaraNamevedaM jJaptyAkAzamanantakam |

kiMcitsvacittenonnItaM spandayuktyeva mAruta: ||3|28|11||

 

निरावरणम्_एव_इदम् ज्ञप्ति-आकाशम्_अनन्तकम्

किंचित्.स्व.चित्तेन-उन्नीतम् स्पन्द-युक्त्या_इव मारुत: ॥11॥

This boundless knowing-space becomes un.veiled,

up.led somehow by your own affective citta,

just as the winds arise with spanda Vibration.

is indeed everywhere and always

from citn-ness the world as.if shines forth

svayam eva AtmanA Atmani

itself by the Self in the Self —

 

**vlm.3.28.12. The sphere of the intellect is uncreated, (being a mode of the Divinity itself); it is ever calm everywhere; and is supposed as the world itself by deluded minds.

**sv.3.28.12 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

 

cidAkAzamajaM zAntaM sarvatraiva hi sarvadA |

cittvAjjagadivAbhAti svayamevAtmanAtmani ||3|28|12||

 

cit.Space, unborn, peaceful, is, now,

everywhere, and always. From this

cit.ness, the world as.if shines forth

yena buddham tu tasya etad – But by whom is understood of that, this –

AkAzAd api zUnyakam – from space indeed the emptiness –

na buddham yena tasya – not understood by whom of that –

etad vajrasAra-acala-upamam – this is like a diamond/adamantine mountain.

 

**vwv.1439.y3.28.13. This (world) is more void than even the sky for one by whom it is understood. This is like an adamantine rock for that person by whom it is not understood.

**vlm.3.28.13. He who understands rightly, views the world to be as unsubstantial as air; but whoso is misled by his wrong judgment takes it to be as a solid mountain.

**sv.3.28.13 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

**DC - who understandis it, world is emptiness from space, who does not understands it, world is hard and material.**AS.First, I see a big typo and hence a misunderstanding. The word is vajrasAra-acala-upamam. [corrected]. It means as hard as a mountain made of the essence of vajra. Also, in your meaning, it should be "emptier than space" - not emptiness from space!

 

yena buddhaM tu tasyaitadAkAzAdapi zUnyakam |

na buddhaM yena tasyaitadvajrasArAcalopamam ||3|28|13||

 

For one who understands, all This

is emptier than Space. But for

one who does not understand, This

gRhe eva yathA svapne

in the house just as in a dream –

nagaram bhAti bhAsuram

a city appears clearly –

tathA etad asad eva

thus this is unSuch only –

antaz cid.dhAtau bhAti bhAsvaram

within the cit.basis shining brightly.

 

**vlm 14. As a house and a city are manifested to us in our dream, so is this unreal world presented as a reality to our understandings.

**sv.3.28.14 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

In this house, just as in a dream

a city appears clearly, just

so the unSuch shines brightly here

असत् सद् इव भाति_इदम् तथा दृश्यत्वम् आत्मनि ॥३।२८।१५॥

yathA marau jalam buddham kaTakatvam ca hemani |

asat sad iva bhAti_idam tathA dRzyatvam Atmani ||3|28|15||

 

yathA marau jalam buddham -

as in a desert water is apprehended –

kaTakatvam ca hemani -

and braceletness in gold –

asat sad iva bhAti idam -

the unSuch as.if Such appears as This –

tathA dRzyatvam Atmani -

thus perceptness in the Self.

 

**vwv.1400/15. As water is perceived in a sandy desert and the state of a bracelet in gold, so this unreal objecthood appears in the Self, as.if it were real.

**vlm.15. As is the misconception of water in the mirage, and the mistake of gold in a bracelet; so does all this unreality appear as a substantiality to the mistaken mind.

**sv.3.28.15 9-15 All this happened in pure space: there is no universe, no distance, no barriers.

 

yathA marau jalaM buddhaM kaTakatvaM ca hemani |

asatsadiva bhAtIdaM tathA dRzyatvamAtmani ||3|28|15||

 

यथा मरौ जलम् बुद्धम् कटकत्वम् हेमनि

As in a desert mirage cool water is apprehended;—

as braceletness in gold,—

what is not.So, appearing as.if-So, is This.

**AS. The meaning of grAma-kITaka seems to be confused here. The AB commentary suggests that this was a woman from the outcasts - people who earned as much respect as an insect in the town. However, kITaka is also the name of a mixed caste - born from kSatriya father and vaizya mother and is described as a village bard. I would agree with this meaning, since it is a more respectful description than an insectlike creature(:-)) There is, however, no carriage! rathyA means a path, a road (perhaps meant for a carriage). My meaning would thus be: They saw the walk (krAntarathyam) of the wife of the village bard, with her ears adorned with blossoms, holding part of her flaxen garment by her hand (perhaps to keep it from soiling), weakened with hunger across the road.

**jd: I take her rather as a rat-lady, an outcaste woman who makes a living by killing rats (for the holy Brâhmana-s, who would be polluted by such an act).

Yes, a lot is going on in the samAsa. dAnta means controlled and refers to sages.

They have made offerings and the leftovers are supposed to be disposed off properly. (These are called nirmAlya - literally removed from garlands for the modern pUjA rituals). These are typically dumped under trees and covered with flowers or leaves, left for animals to partake. The mountain crows are falling down to them (coming down from mountains) to get their share! The second line describes grounds in front of the doors filled with flowers of krUra and kuraNTaka trees.

No this is self contained. It is describing flies in various situations! Here is the meaning.

Flies being blown away by fluttering (spandAsta) of one ear of a calf lying on one side

(ekAnta-supta-vatsa-eka-karNa). Flies hovering about (spandi) the corner of the mouth (sRkkvi) made sticky by curds tasted by the cow boys (gopa-ucchiSTIkRta-dadhi-sva)

The concept of ucchiSTa is cultural. Any food touched by mouth becomes ritually contaminated and is called ucchiSTa - literally left over. Orthodox south indian brahmins carry this concept to extreme. When they drink any liquid from a pot, they would not touch the pot with their mouth, even if nobody else is sharing it. This avoid self contamination(:-)) Very cute observations!
