THE CONSTANT LOVERS

jd:

The King

has caught the two lovers in their passion

.

he has put them through tortures worthy of the Christians

(sometimes the tortured, sometimes the torturer)

.

His Royal Beingness

will even get His Holiness the Sage *bharata

to curse

the wicked pair

(after a trial)

.

then

the Lotus-King

again addressed a *muni of the *bharata family,

who was sitting nearby

:

*jd.1 - अथ इन्द्रेण एवम् उक्तः असौ – So by this *indra it was spoken. = राजा राजीव-लोचनः – The lotus-eyed King = मुनिं भरत-नामानं – to the Muni among those named "*bharata" = पार्श्व-संस्थम् – sitting in Court = उवाच – he said: -1-

* #bharata –m.- "to be or being maintained" , N. of अग्नि (kept alive by the care of men) RV.; a priest (= ऋत्विज्Naigh. Ii , 18; an actor , dancer , tumbler _yAjJ.; a barbarian , mountaineer (= #zabara शबर) *Lex.; of various teachers and authors (esp. of an ancient मुनि supposed author of a manual of the dramatic art called नाट्य-शास्त्र or भरत-शास्त्र).

~sv.1-3 THE SUN continued: Lord, the king thereupon approached the sage *bharata and pleaded that he should punish the recalcitrant couple by cursing them.

THE KING declared

Lord.bhagavan,

you

know right from wrong

.

I

see a very wicked soul before you

look at that fierce face,

that shocking arrogance

!

look, Lord,

behold that man who

raped

my wife

!

+

Great.muni,

you must cast a curse on all such sinners

or _you_ sin,

you

penalize the innocent if you abandon justice

!

*jd.2 - भगवन् सर्व-धर्म-ज्ञ – O lord, all-dharma-knower = पश्यामि सु-दुर्-आत्मनः – I see a very wicked soul = भृशम् – fiercely = अस्य मुखे – in his face = स्फारं धार्ष्ट्यं – shocking arrogant = मद्-दार-हारिणः – my-wife-raping *jd.3 - पाप-अनुरूपम् अस्य आशु – his sin-according-with at once = देहि शापं महा-मुने – give a curse, o great-Muni = यद् .वध्य-वधात् पापं – what is a sin, is un.punishable/innocent-penalty to penalize the innocent, = तद् एव हि वध्य-त्यागात् – that indeed is renouncing punishment.

~vlm.2. The king spoke:--Lord, you are acquainted with all morality, and seest this ravisher of my wife, and hearest the arrogant speech, that he utters before our face.

~vlm.3. Deign, O great sage! pronounce thy fulmination upon him without delay; because it is a breach of justice to spare the wicked, as it is to hurt the innocent. ~vlm.4. Being thus besought by the great king, *bharata the best of the wise munis; considered well in his mind, the crime of this wicked soul *indra.

~sv.1-3 THE SUN continued: Lord, the king thereupon approached the sage *bharata and pleaded that he should punish the recalcitrant couple by cursing them.

then

the muni *bharata,

~vlm.6. Then they both replied to the king and his venerable sage, saying,--" what fools must ye be, to have thus wasted your imprecation, the great gain of your devotion, on our devoted heads, (knowing that our souls are invincible).

~sv.3-4-5-6 And, the sage pronounced a curse upon the couple. However, they said to the sage and to the king: "Alas, you are both of little understanding. By thus cursing us you have squandered the merit acquired by penance.

*jd.6 - ततस् तौ -  Then those two   प्रत्य्-ऊचनुः राज-भरतौ -  replied to the RAjA and *bharata = इदं वचः -  with these words. सु-दुर्-मती युवाम् -  Ill-valued by you   याभ्यां क्षपितम् -  what you have used up   दुश्-चरं तपः -  hard-won Tapas merit.  *jd.7 - अनेन शाप-दानेन -  By this curse-giving   भवति किंचित् अवयोः -  is nothing at all to us two   देहे नष्टे -  though the body be destroyed  नौ किंचित् -  not for us at all

The inner principle of the soul, can never be destroyed by any body and anywhere; owing to its inscrutable, subtile and intellectual nature.
