~vlm.2. The sky which had reflected the blood-red flush of the field of blood, was now dimmed by the setting of the glorious sun, and darkened by the veil of evening.

~vlm.5. The busy buzz of Creation being silent in the dead darkness of night, like the humming of bees over the surface of the waters, the hearts of men were closed in sleep as in death, like the petals of the lotus at night.

~DC. Pitch darkness covered everything like lotos flower, closing with bees inside which come to drink its nectar.

~AS. This is a complicated analogy. On one hand, it is saying: In the lakes which cherish life (rasazAliSu) but now were devoid of life (niHsattveSu) and overcome with darkness (namo-'ndheSu), the lotuses closed up (padmA saMkocam AyayuH) as when hearts of the dead shrivel up. On the other hand, the army formations (called padma) which were fond of yelling(rasanA-rasa-zAliSu) as they became devoid of energy - or men (niHsattveSu) and blind with confusion (tamo'andheSu) got folded up (saMkocam AyayuH) as when hearts of the dead shrivel up.

मीलत्-पक्षाः क्षणात् सुप्ताः कृच्छ्र-प्रोच्छ्रित-कन्धराः । कुलायेषु खगा आसञ् छव-अङ्गेष्व् इव हेतयः ॥६॥

~vlm.6. The birds lay with their folded wings and fallen crests in their nests, as the dead bodies were lying in the field, covered with their wounds and weapons.

आसन्न-चन्द्र-सुभगा लोकाः कुसुम-पङ्क्तयः । उल्लसद्-द्-हृदया जाता वीर-पक्षेष्व् इव श्रियः ॥7॥

white as the lotuses below,

raising the hearts of heroes

that rose in their battalions

~DC. beauty of raised moon was like sight of white lotuses, and it made human hearts happy like splendour of battalions?

~AS. With the advent of rising moon (Asanna-candra.subhagAH), people like lotuses (lokA: kusuma-paGktayaH) were excited - literally with blooming hearts- (ullasad-hRdayA: jAtAH), as the fortunes rejoice on the side of the brave. The last phrase is a bit involved to explain, but here is what I see. zrIya: might be a genitive sing. of zrI and might mean zriya: lokA: - the various Goddesses attendant to zrI. Just as they rejoice in the company of the brave (probably gone to heaven(:-))
~vlm.7. Then the fair moonbeams shone above, and the white lotuses were blown below; the hearts of men were gladdened, and the victors felt joyous in themselves.

रक्त-वारि-मयी सायम् अङ्ग-गुप्त-शिली-मुखा । संकुचद् वक्त्र-पद्माभूद् रण-भूमिर् इवाब्जिनी ॥8॥

over the blood-red sea,

folded arms hiding stone-cold faces

they lie upon the battle-ground like lotuses

~DC. Evening covered battle ground with red waters of sunset, bodies were hidden by arrows, and heads were like lotuses. ~AS. Again, it is a full analogy! On one hand, it is a pond of lotuses (abjinI) which has acquired reddish water due to sunset (sAyam raktavArimayI) , it has hidden its bees (inside its lotuses - aGgaguptazilImukhA) whose face shriveled up (saMkucad-vaktra-padmA abhUt). On the other hand, it is the battle ground in the evening, with blood like water, with arrows (zilImukhAH) hidden in its grounds, which had actual faces instead of lotuses (vaktra-padmA) became shriveled up.

~vlm.8. The ruddy evening assumed the shape of the blood-red sea of battle, and the fluttering bees now hid themselves like the faces of the fallen soldiers.

they are free from fear,

those beings

who have closed their eyes,

sunk in the waters which they had attacked from every direction

~vlm.10. The bodies that were thought to be lost in darkness, were now recovered in light, as the gems hid under the water, are found scattered about in moonlight.

आसीद्_रणाङ्गणं गायद्_वेताल-कुल-संकुलम् । क्वणत्_कङ्काल-काङ्क-स्थ-कङ्क-काकोल-केलिमत् ॥11॥

the battle.field is crowded with the singing, hollering Zombie clan,

~vlm.11. The battle field was filled by the Vetála demons, howling with their hideous cry; while bodies of vultures, crows and owls, were tearing the carcasses and sporting with the skeletons.

अथ काष्ठ.चिता-ज्वाल=सतार-अम्बर+भास्वरम् । पचत्-"पच-पचा"-शब्दि-मेदस्-मांस.मय-अनलम् ॥12॥

as limbs and bones crackle and spark and sizzle in the funeral pyres,

~vlm.13. The fire burnt the bodies with their bones to ashes, after which it extinguished itself as if sated with plenty. The female fiends now began to sport in the water.

श्व-काक-यक्ष-वेताल-ताल-कोलाहल-उल्बणम् । गम-अगमेन भूतानां समुड्डीन-वन-उपमम् ॥14॥

the red meat,

glossy with its marrow-fat,

and Cannibal pizAca.s chew on the bloody flesh,

the funeral pyres,

gazing avidly at the corpses,

they shoulder the fallen flesh

उत्ताण्डव-उग्र-कुम्भाण्ड-मण्डल-उड्डामर-उदरम् । "छमिच्-छमित्"-प्रलापान्तं मेदो-असृग्-बाष्प-स.अम्बुदम् ॥17॥

uttANDava-ugra-kumbhANDa-maNDala-uDDAmara-udaram | "chamic-chamit"-pralApAntam medo-asRg-bASpa.sa.ambudam ||

they dance the tAndava,

those fierce

kumbhAnda Bellyballs,

a crowd of haughty stomachs,

chattering

"chumm-i-chumm",

as a drifting cloud of smoke

carries the smell of fat and blood

~vlm.17. There came also bodies of ferocious Kumbhándas, and big Dámaras, uttering their barbarous cries of chumchum, and hovering over the fumes of fat and flesh in the shapes of clouds.

वहद्-रक्त-नदीर् अंहो-रूढ-भूचर-रूपिकम् । वेताल-कुल-कङ्काल-कर्षणा-कुल-काकलम् ॥१८॥

~vlm.18. Bodies of Vetálas stood in the streams of blood like earthly beings, and snatched the skeletons with hideous cries.

मृत-इभ-उदर-मञ्जूषा-सुप्त-वेताल-बालकम् । विविक्त-एक-रण-उद्देश-पान-क्रीडा-स्थ-राक्षसम् ॥१९॥

the Zombie children

in the warm guts of elephants

मत्त-वेताल-कलह-चिता-लात-रण-उज्ज्वलम् । वहद्-रक्त-वसा-मिश्र-गन्ध-बन्धुर-मारुतम् ॥20॥

matta-vetAla-kalaha-citA-lAta-raNa-ujjvalam | vahad-rakta-vasA-mizra-gandha-bandhura-mArutam ||

blood-drunken Zombies fight beside the blazing pyres,

where drifting winds

carry the mixed aromas of baked blood and melted body-fat

रूपिका-पेटिका-वान्ता-रणद्-रटरट-आरवम् । अर्ध-पक्व-शव-आस्वाद-लुब्ध-यक्ष-उल्लसत्-कलि ॥21॥

rUpikA-peTikA-vAntA-raNad-raTaraTa-Aravam | ardha-pakva-zava-AsvAda-lubdha-yakSa-ullasat-kali ||

shape.shifter demons cackle their delight

with "rata-ratata",

fighting over the half-cooked corpse.meat with the cavorting yakSa.Guards

~vlm.21. The female fiends (Rupikás), filled the baskets of their bellies with carrion, with a rat-a-tat (ratarata) noise; and the YakSa cannibals were snatching the half-burnt carcasses from the funeral piles, as their roasted meat and dainty food (S. kali A. Kul).

~DC. bellies of eaten ful rupikas were rattling noise rata-rata greedy yakSas were relishing half-cooked corpses and merrily poking each other. ~AS. This is really gruesome!! The "rUpikA" are a certain kind of demons who were vomitting in boxes (peTikAvAnta) with bubbling noises (AraNad-raTaratAravam). The yakSas were lusting after the smells of (AsvAda-lubdha) of these half-cooked corpses (ardha-pakva-zava)
and a fight was breaking among them (ullasat-kali); such was the battleground.

तुङ्ग-वङ्ग-कलिङ्गाङ्गतङ्गणाङ्ग-लगत्-खगम् । तारा-पातोपम-हसत्-संमुख-ज्वाल-रूपिकम् ॥22॥

tuGga-vaGga-kaliGgAGgataGgaNAGga-lagat-khagam | tArA-pAtopama-hasat.saMmukha-jvAla-rUpikam ||

and flying Imps attack the flesh

of vaGga & kaliGga and taGgana bodies

they are like

a night of falling stars that fell in fiery shapes

as they laugh out loud

~vlm.22. Aerial imps (khagas) attacked the dead bodies of the big Bangas and black Kalingas, and flouted about with their open mouths, emitting the blaze of falling meteors.

पतद्-वेताल-सोल्लास-मध्यस्थ-असृग्-विरूपिकम् । पिशाच-आकर्णित-आभ्यर्ण-योगिनी-गण-नायकम् ॥23॥

patad-vetAla.sollAsa-madhyastha-asRg-virUpikam | pizAca-AkarNita-AbhyarNa-yoginI-gaNa-nAyakam ||

flying Zombies

filled with delight,

shape.shifters,

knee-deep in blood,

pizAca.s are heard,

beside a gathering yoginI flock

~vlm.23. The Vetála goblins fell down in the dark and discoloured blood-pits, lying hid in the midst of the heaps of dead bodies; while the Pisácha ogres and the leaders of Yogini sprites, laughed at them for their false step (vetála).

प्रसृत-अन्त्र-महा.तन्त्री-प्राय-संपन्न-वादनम् । पिशाच-वासना-उत्क्रान्त-पिशाची.भूत-मानवम् ॥24॥

the plucked guts

in perfect tune,

like a fine instrument

reborn in war as pizAcas,

~AS. ... Men were overcome with pizAca-like desires (pizAca-vAsanA-AkrAnta) and as a result became pizAcas themselves!

~DC. singing in excellent voice with accompaniment of strings of stretched guts, pishacha sang far better than men, ghosts or female pishachas.

~AS. The battleground had sounds as if generated by a great lyre (mahAtantrI) formed from spilled guts (prasRta-antra). Men were overcome with pizAca-like desires (pizAca-vAsanA-AkrAnta) and as a result became pizAcas themselves!

~vlm.24. The pulling of the entrails (antras-ánts), vibrated as by striking the strings of wired instruments (tantras-or tánts); and the ghosts of men that had become fiends from their fiendish desires, fell a-fighting with one another.

रूपिक-आलोकन-आपूर्व-त्रास-अर्ध-मृत-सद्-भटम् । क्वचिद् वेताल-रक्षोभिर् अपरीपूर्ण-मद्रकम् ॥25॥

rUpika-Alokana-ApUrva-trAsa-ardha-mRta.sad-bhaTam | kvacid vetAla-rakSobhir aparIpUrNa-madrakam ||

gruesomely ghastly shapes gathered,

dead warriors everywhere

Zombies and Demons made a most unbeautiful feast of them

~vlm.25. Valiant soldiers were affrighted at the sight of the spectres (Rúpíkás); and the obsequies were disturbed by the Vetála and RákSasa goblins.

~DC. Half dead yet alive warriors were terrified seeing demons-rupikas,

spoiling the feast of vetalas and rakSasas.~AS.First, there is a typo! aparipUrNa->aparIpUrNa. Of course, this causes a problem in interpretation since paripUrNa is not in the dictionary. Perhaps, that is why someone "fixed" it(:-)) However, the meaning of the whole verse is then hard to explain. Here is my solution: The great warriors were half-dead with fear (ardha-mRta.sadbhaTam) due to the fear from the startling stares of the rUpikAs (rupikA-Alocana-apUrva-trAsa); elsewhere (kvacid) festivities were crashed by vetAlas and rAkSas. The explanation of aparIpUrNa is this: apara=other. aparIpUrNa=filled with others. (aparai: pUrNam) madraka=festivities (kalyANotsava: = according to AB commentary).

स्वरूपिकास्कन्ध-पतच्-छव-त्रस्त-निशाचरम् । नभः संघट्टितापूर्व-भूत-पेटक-संकटम् ॥26॥

svarUpikAskandha-patac-chava-trasta-nizAcaram | nabha: saMghaTTitApUrva-bhUta-peTaka.saMkaTam ||

borne on the shoulders of NightRovers,

corpses slip and fall away,

but are gathered in baskets

by the demons watching from below

~vlm.26. The hobgoblins of the night, (nisácharas), got frightened at the fall of the carcasses from the shoulders of the elfs (Rúpikás), who were carrying them aloft in the air; where they were waylaid by a throng of ghostly demons (bhúta.sankata).

अति.प्रयत्न-अपहृत-म्रियमाण-नर-अमिषम् । स्व.भक्ष्य-अपेक्ष-पक्षेषु विक्षिप्त-शव-राशि-मत् ॥27॥

and some are overtaken by fatigue,

drop the dying flesh

the pleasure was not worth their while

they leave the corpses in a heap

~vlm.27. Many dying bodies, that were lifted aloft with labour by the bogies (Dánas), were let to fall down dead on the ground, being found unfit for their food.

शिवा-मुख-अनल-शिख-अखण्ड-उत्थ-मिति-रक्तगैः । समुड्डीन-नव-अशोक-पुष्प-गुच्छम् इव_अभितः ॥28॥

~vlm.28. Pieces of blood-red flesh, fallen from the fiery jaws of jackals, resembled clusters of asoka flowers, strewn all around the funeral ground.

~DC. Raised hair on the heads of jackals was red with blood, as if their faces were surrounded by open red ashoka flowers.

~AS. *anala-zikhA is a flame - like a tuft of hair on the fire! • There were pieces of red meat falling off from mouths of jackals, as if embers from the flames of fires from their mouths; this made it (battleground) look like a bouquet of fresh azoka flowers.

कबन्ध-कन्धरा-बन्ध-व्यग्र-वेताल-बालकम् । यक्ष-रक्षः-पिशाचादि-कचद् आकाश.ग-उल्मुकम् ॥२९॥

kabandha-kandharA-bandha-vyagra-vetAla-bAlakam | yakSa.rakSa:pizAca-Adi=kacad_AkAza.ga-ulmukam ||
