CANTO 1.2: A Visit from Brahma
VALMIKI THE ANTHILL MAN
1.2.1 In heaven, on earth, and in space, outside me, inside me
too it shines as the illumination of the Self: to that Self of All I
give praise!
2 "I am bound and I would be free!" Whoever knows this certainly;
who is not wholly ignorant,--and neither is a Know-it-All,--is
qualified for this Shastra. 3 This is the story-telling path, the
path of Enquiry and Freedom; and one who enquires into Wisdom is
free from the pains of Rebirth.
4 FoeSlayer, after "Rama's Way" I have written this Way of the
Supreme Vasishtha. Follow it! 2.5 I taught it to Bharadvaja Skylark,
my clever student, in its entirety; and it is like an ocean that is
full of pearls. 6 And that clever Bharadvaja went to Mount Meru,
where he sang my stories to the lord Brahma, creator of the universe.
7 And the Ancestor of the Worlds Brahma was pleased, and said to
him: "Sonny, ask me whatever you desire and I will grant the boon to
you."
[Has any story-teller ever boasted louder than this?]
BHARADVAJA THE SKYLARK
8 Bhagavan Lord, Master of Beings and Becoming, this favor I
would ask from you: a Way that leads people out of Sorrow, that
anyone, everyone, can follow.
BRAHMA THE IMMENSE
9 Get back to the Anthill Ashram and there learn the entire
wonderful and greater Ramayana. 2.10 Hearing it, any man is freed
from every delusion: it is a bridge over an ocean, an icon of
highest virtue.
ANTHILL MAN
11 So saying, that Power of Powers, Maker of Things came along
with my clever Bharadvaja Skylark, here to the Anthill Ashram.
12 I made haste to worship the god, giving him drink, bathing his
feet-and then he spoke, the Great Suchness, friend of all creatures,
spoke to me!
13 "Your tale of the adventures of Rama,--best of munis, do not
get tired, but finish it in its immaculate entirety. 14 It is by
means of this work that the narrow strait of Samsara, this world,
can be crossed easily, as if in a swift clipper ship."
2.15 And the unborn Brahma went on: "I have come here to command
you to relate this entire Shastra for the benefit of this world."
16 And then, within less than an hour's visit, the lord Brahma
vanished, to my amazement, like a wave that softly sinks into the
sea.
17 I was totally overcome by this experience; but then at last
came to my senses, and put this question to young Skylark:
18 "What was it that the Lord Brahma said to me, Skylark? What
did he say?" And the clever Skylark at once told me just what Brahma
had said.
SKYLARK
19 The Ramayana that the Lord Brahma related to you, you are to
tell for the benefit of the whole world of Samsara. 2.20 So tell me,
lord, how they proceeded in this strait of Samsara--the wise Rama
and Bharata the Bearer, and Shatrughna the Foeslayer, Lakshmana
Luckyman, and Sita the Fair, and their Companions and followers. 22
Tell me in plain language how they got free from sorrow, so that I
can do the same, and everyone else of those born into this world.
ANTHILL
23 So Bharadvaja Skylark gave (with due respect) Brahma's
command; and I proceeded thereupon to do what I was ordered to. 24 I
told him, "Listen, Skylark, and I'll tell you what you want to hear;
and hearing it, you will put all bewilderment far behind you!"
2.25 And when I had told Rama's Way: "So, wise boy, you should
carry on like lotus-eyed Rama, with a detached Intellect, happy.
26 "Be like Lakshmana Luckyman and Bharata the Bearer and
Shatrughna Foeslayer, his brothers, all of them great-minded; be
like their mothers, Kausalya and Sumitra, be like Sita the Fair, and
their father, who was the match for any ten chariots, King
Dasharatha Charioteer. 27 Be like Rama's companions Krtastra.
champion of Astra Weapons, and Virodha the Quarrelsome. and wise
Bodhapara; be like Vasishtha the Supreme; like Vamadeva the Divine;
be like the eight great ministers, 28 Dhrshti the Bold, and Jayanta
the Victorious, Bhasa the Bright, Satya the True, and Vijaya the
Victor, be like the frightful Vibhishana, or Sushena the
Sharpshooter, not to forget the awsome jawsome Hanuman!
29 "Those eight great ministers I mention were of equable
detached minds, were great souls, Living Freemen who took the world
just as it came. 2.30 Be like them in your offerings, your charity,
your conduct, your remembrance. Then, son, you will be free of the
sorrows of this world. 2.30
"Fallen into the great ocean, Samsara,
becoming one with the very highest truth,
one does not grieve, but in humility,
free of life's fevers, he rests in contentment. "
