as for the nature of the astra, some modern Translators try to equate them with atomic weapons. but considering that they so.far we have seen fighting mainly with catapulted rocks and war-hammers, this seems unlikely.

"obtained (or found- prAptaM) in front (puraH)". Having found sindhu in front with raised head, the King (vidUratha) was overcome with great fury surpassing the heat of the mid day Sun. Thus the King was angry to see the proud raised head of sindhu in front.

~vlm.3 He drew his arrows from his dark quiver and shot them like the rays of the sun rising from the womb of night.

~AS. The analogy is indeed rather twisted. tUNir-rajanI compares his arrow case with night. zilImukha has two meanings, arrows or bees. The flying swarm of arrows is being compared to swarm of bees trapped in night. The standard poetic convention is that a bee gets trapped in some lotuses which close at night and comes out when the Sun arises.

 

एक एव विनिर्याति गुणात् तस्य शिली-मुख: सहस्रम् भवति व्योम्नि गच्छन् पतति लक्षशः॥४॥

like ocean.water at full tide or the radiant beams of the morning sun

vlm 8 Showers of shafts poured forth constantly from the hands of Viduratha, like the ceaseless torrents of rivers, or billows of the sea, or the endless radiation of solar rays.

vlm 9 Shells and bullets were flying about like sparks of fire struck out of the balls of red-hot iron, and falling like flowers of forests blown away by gusts of wind.

a cloudburst, or the splash of a cascading waterfall.

the conflagrated city sparked and sparkled, bright and terrible

vlm10 They fell like showers of rainwater, and like the rush of water-falls, and as plentifully as the sparks of fire that flew from Viduratha’s burning city.

hearing it, both fearful armies grew quiet as still waters

vlm11 The jarring sound of their bowstrings hushed the clamor of the two armies, like a calm quiets the roaring of the raging sea.

vlm12 The course of arrows, was as the stream of Ganges (the milky path) in heaven, running towards the King of Sindhu, as the river runs to meet the sea (Sindhu).

vlm13. The shower of arrows flying from the golden bow of the king was like a flood of rain falling under the variegated rainbow in the sky.

 

 

वहन्ति स्म शरापूरा गङ्गापूरा इव_अम्बरे

सिन्धोर् अभिमुखं युद्धे घर्घर-आराव-रंहस: 12

and so the flood of arrows flows, it's like gangA come down from heaven

वहच् छव-शव.शब्दं निर्ययुर् धनुर् अम्बुदात् ॥13॥

vahac chava-zava.zabdam niryayur dhanur ambudAt ||13

they flash, the golden bolts, the flocks of arrows;

and without a break

—"shava!—shava!"—

they fall upon sindhu, like showers upon the sea

* dhanur ambudAt – a bow from a cloud — [vlm reads this as indra-dhanu, a rainbow, but there is no variety of colors in a cloud of arrows. AB has nothing to say. jd] — [vlm is clearly mistaken. Here the bow of the King (vidUratha) is compared to a cloud (ambuda). The shower of arrows fell from the cloud – his bow – on the ocean – the King sindhu! AS]

 

बाण-मन्दाकिनी-पूरं व्रजन्तं सिन्धु-पूरणे

bANa-mandAkinI-pUram vrajantam sindhu-pUraNe |

वातायनात् तम् आलोक्य लीला तत्-पुर.वासिनी॥14

vAtAyanAt tam Alokya lIlA tat-pura.vAsinI ||14

~vlm. Then from the window, the lIlA who was the native of that city saw the darts of her husband rushing like the currents of the Ganges against the Sindhu forces resembling a sea.

 

 

तेन बाण-समूहेन जयम् आशङ्क्य भर्तरि

tena bANa-samUhena jayam AzaGkya bhartari |

उवाच वाक्यम् आनन्द-विकसन्-मुख-पङ्कजा 15

uvAca vAkyam Ananda-vikasan-mukha-paGkajA ||15

that flock of arrows makes her doubtful of the victory of her husband,

and

she cries to the Goddess, her face blooming with joy like a lotus

:

~AS. AzaGkya is often "having doubted", but here it is used in a positive sense. The meaning is: Having wagered on the victory to her lord (based on ) that flock of arrows, her face blooming with joy, she spoke: mukha-paGkajA does not have to be face-lotus, it is a standard poetic device and can be dropped in translation. [jd. Omission makes paraphrase rather than translation. you read the arrow.cloud as from her husband; I read it as from sindhu; her joy is at the sight of the Goddess].

~vlm. 15 She understood the flight of those darts to promise victory to her lord, and then spoke gladly to Saraswati, with her lotus-like mouth.

 

जय देवि जयत्य्_एष नाथो_अस्माकम् विलोकय किम्._अनेन शर-ओघेण मेरु:_अप्य्_एति चूर्णताम् ॥१६॥

jaya devi jayati_eSa: nAtha:_asmAkam vilokaya | kim.ca_anena zara-ogheNa meru:_api_eti cUrNatAm ||16||

"All hail the Goddess, and all hail our Lord!

Look how his arrows flood

it's enuf to powder Mount Meru!"

~vlm. 16 "Be victorious O goddess, and behold victory waiting on the side of my lord whose darts are piercing the rocks and breaking them to pieces."

 

तस्याम् एवं वदन्त्यां तु घन-स्नेह-रव-आकुलम्

tasyAm evam vadantyAm tu ghana-sneha-rava-Akulam |

प्रेक्षण-व्यग्रयोर् देव्योर् हसन्त्योर् मानुषीं हृदा 17

prekSaNa-vyagrayor devyor hasantyor mAnuSIm hRdA ||17

then just.when she speaks these words all full of love,

the Goddess smiles upon that smiling woman

with her great humanity of heart

~vlm. 17 As she was uttering these words full of affection, the goddesses eyed her sideways and smiled at her womanish tenderness of heart.

*AS: AB is giving the hint. mAnuSI means immature, like an ordinary man. [!!! jd: I will never translate 'immature'. love may be many things, but "immature" is not one of them.] The syntax is indeed complicated here. The meaning goes thus: prekSaNa-vyagrayor devyor hasantyor (in front of the two Goddesses (saraswati and Lila 2) engrossed in watching and smiling) tasyAm evam mAnuSIm hRdA ghana-sneha-rava-Akulam vadantyAm tu (as she (Lila 1) was thus expressing her natural feelings with voice indicative of her great affection).

*jd. - tasyAm evam vadantyAm tu – But as she was saying this —ghana-sneha-rava-Akulam – all full of love —prekSaNa-vyagrayor – her eyes intent upon ??? —devyor hasantyor – of the two smiling women —mAnuSIm hRdA – human at heart. ???

 

 

तच् छर-अर्णवम् आमत्तम् अपिबत् सिन्धु-वाडव: ।

शर-उष्मणा ह्य् अगस्त्येन जह्नुर् मन्दाकिनीम् इव ॥18॥

tac_chara-arNavam Amattam apibat sindhu-vADava: |

zara-uSmaNA hy agastyena jahnur mandAkinIm iva ||18

a crazy wave

—the vAdava Submarine Fire of sindhu—

sucked

—with the heat of its arrows—

everything dry,

just as agastya and jahnu drank the waters dry

~vlm.18 The flaming fire of Sindhu swallowed the raging sea of Viduratha’s arrows like an undersea fire consumes water, and like Jahnu drank the stream of Ganges. 19 The Sindhu missile weapons thwarted the thickening arrows of his adversary, and drove them back broken and flying as dust in the empty air.

 

बाण-वर्षेण कणशस्_तम् सायक-महाघनम् छित्त्वा तनुरज: कृत्वा चिक्षेप गगन-अर्णवे ॥१९॥

छित्त्वा तनुरज: कृत्वा चिक्षेप गगन-अर्णवे 19

chittvA tanuraja: kRtvA cikSepa gagana-arNave ||19

the arrow-shower drop-by-drop met the mighty missile-cloud.

the cloudburst made metallic dust that filled the whole sky-ocean.

~vlm.19 The Sindhu missile weapons thwarted the thickening arrows of his adversary, and drove them back broken and flying as dust in the empty air.

 

यथा दीपस्य शान्तस्य परिज्ञायते गति: तस्य सायक-सङ्घस्य विज्ञाता तथा गति: ॥२०॥

yathA dIpasya zAntasya na pari.jJAyate gati: | tasya sAyaka-saGghasya na vijJAtA tathA gati: ||20

as an unflickering snuffed lamp

gives no help on a darkened path,

the company of swordsmen could not see the weapons come their way

~AS. Just as the movement of a lamp is invisible (na parijJAyate gati: ) if it does not flicker (dIpasya zAntasya), one could not perceive the speed of that swarm of arrows (sAyaka-saGghasya).

~vlm. As an extinguished lamp loses its light in the air, so the flashes of the fire arms disappeared in the sky, and nobody knew where they fled.

 

तम् छित्त्वा सायका-सारम् शरीर-अम्बु-धरम् घनम् व्योम्नि प्रसारयाम्.आस रसाच्_छव-शात-अन्वितम् ॥२१॥

tam chittvA sAyakA-sAram zarIra-ambu-dharam ghanam | vyomni prasArayAm.Asa rasAt_zava-zAta-anvitam ||21

having repelled a rush of ringing* swords,

he now unleashed a thick stormcloud of astras

whose poison made corpses by the hundreds

* SDSingh, Ancient Indian Warfare: "The word <sAyaka> has ... been used to signify a sword, described as adorned with bells." Mbh 4.38.31.

AS: Having broken up the attack of those arrows [??? see above jd] (tam chittvA sAyakA-sAraM) which were like a cloud holding bodies like water (zarIra-ambu-dharam ghanam), he splattered them across space (vyomni prasArayAm.Asa) as clouds with hundreds of corpses as water (rasAc chava-zAta-anvitam). ¶ Perhaps the image is this:The swarm of arrows released by sindhu was followed by his soldiers as well, and vidUratha while breaking up the arrows, killed the soldiers as well.}

~vlm.21 Having thus dispelled the shower of arrows, the Sindhu king sent a thick cloud of his weapons, appearing as hundreds of dead bodies flying in the air.

 

विदूरथस् तम् अप्य् आशु व्यधमत्सायक-उत्तमै:

vidUrathas tam apy Azu vyadhamatsAyaka-uttamai: |

सामान्य-जलदं मत्तं कल्पान्त-पवनो यथा॥22

sAmAnya-jaladam mattam kalpAnta-pavano yathA ||22

||

vidUratha quickly-enough

struck-back with his best archery,

making a mad careening cloud whirling in a Doomsday hurricane

.

~vlm.22 Viduratha repelled them quickly by means of his better bolts, as a hurricane disperses the frightening clouds in the air.

~AS. vidUratha promptly hit him back (tam apy Azu vyadhamat) with his best arrows (sAyaka-uttamaiH), as the Dooms day wind would push back an ordinary cloud.

 

कृत-प्रतिकृतैर् एवं बाण-वर्षैर् महीपती

kRta-pratikRtair evam bANa-varSair mahIpatI |

व्यर्थी-कृतैर् अनयतां प्रहारम् अविचारणै: 23

vyarthI-kRtair anayatAm prahAram avicAraNai: ||23

so back-and.forth they sent their rains of arrows,

those two mighty Lords,

wreaking their ruin as they waged their war,

not showing much good sense

.

~vlm.23 Both kings, baffled in their aims by opposing arms let indiscriminately loose against each another, laid hold on more powerful missiles.

 

अथ_आदधे मोहन-अस्त्रं सिन्धुर् गन्धर्व-सौहृदात् ।

atha_Adadhe mohana-astram sindhur gandharva-sauhRdAt |

प्राप्तं तेन ययुर् लोका विना मोहं विदूरथात् ॥24॥

prAptam tena yayur lokA vinA moham vidUrathAt ||24

but then sindhu loosed

Delusion,

an astra Weapon he received from a gandharva friend

everyone became deluded—

everyone but vidUratha

.

~vlm.24 Sindhu let fly his magic missile that was gift from a gandharva. It kept the army of his enemy all spell-bound except Viduratha himself.

 

व्यस्त-शस्त्र-अम्बरा मूका विषण्ण-वदन-ईक्षणा:

vyasta-zastra-ambarA mUkA viSaNNa-vadana-IkSaNA: |

मृता इव_अभवन् योधाश् चित्र-न्यस्ता इव_अथवा॥25

the weapons scatter through the sky.

the soldiers are struck dumb,

and stop,

a sorry-faced sight,

like dead men, or still as a painted picture

यावद् विदूरथाद् अन्यं मोहो नयति मन्दताम्

तावद् विदूरथो राजा प्रबोध-अस्त्रम् अथ_आददे 26

and when their delusion leads-to stillness,

rAjA vidUratha launches his pra.bodha Wake.up astra

~vlm.26 As the soldiers of Viduratha remained spellbound within their files, King Viduratha employed his instruments of a counter-charm to remove the spell.

~AS. While (yAvad) others beside vidUratha (vidUrathAd anyaM) were dulled by confusion (moho nayati mandatAm), (tAvad – in English no counterword to while is needed) vidUratha brought out the "prabodhastra" the Wake.up astra. A+dA has the meaning of taking up, not sending. The idea is that he pulled it out from his collection!

 

तत: प्रबोधम्_आपन्ना: प्रजा: प्रातर्_इव_अब्जिनी विदूरथे भवत्_सिन्धु: क्रुद्धो_स्र्क इव राक्षसे ॥२७॥

~vlm. this awakened the senses of his men like morning twilight reveals a bed of lotuses, and the rising sun opens their closed petals to light. The Sindhu king fired his rage at them like the raging.

which binds the body like a noose;

and so the sky becomes filled with snakes

in heaps

like mountains.

the earth is slithering with snakes—

~vlm.28 He flung his serpentine weapons upon them, which bound like a band around all their bodies, encircling the battle ground and air like snakes wrapped round crags and rocks.

 

सर्पैर्विलसिता भूमिर्मृणालैः सरसी यथा

the earth is slithering with snakes—as a pond crawls with its drifting

lotuses. The mountains sport their new blankets of crawling black-snakes

~vlm.29 The ground was filled with snakes like a lake with the spreading stalks of lotuses, and the bodies of gigantic warriors were bound by them like hills by huge and horrible hydras.

~AS. The ground covered by slithering serpents was like a lake full of lotus stalks, all mountains appeared to be wearing a blanket of black snakes.

 

पदार्था: सर्व एव_इमे विष-उष्म-खिन्नताम् ययु: सपर्वत-वन-आभोगा ययौ विवशताम् मही ॥३०॥

~AS. Everything in the world was suffering due to the heat of the poison. The earth became desperate due to its forests and mountains covered in serpents.

~vlm.30 Everything was overpowered by the sharp power of the poison, and the inhabitants of the hills and forests were benumbed by the venomous infection.

 

 

पूत-अङ्गार-समाकीर्णम् विष-वैषम्य-शंसिन: ववू: रूक्ष-उष्ण-नीहार-वाता ज्वलन-रेणव: ॥३१॥

pUta-aGgAra-samAkIrNam viSa-vaiSamya-zaMsina: | vavU: rUkSa-uSNa-nIhAra-vAtA jvalana-reNava: ||31

the stench of white-hot coals

scatters

before a bitter poison-cloud that blows a torrid mist,

a wind of burning dust,

a fog of fire

~vlm. The smart poison spread a fiery heat all around, and the frozen snows like fire-brands sent forth their burning particles which were blown by the hot winds in the air.

~VA. stinking coals were all around, promising poison sorrows, winds blew sour, hot fogs of corroding dust.

~AS. Winds bearing hot harsh fog, with particles of embers made everything filled with bright hot coals, giving the painful experience of poison.

 

विदूरथो_ऽथ सौपर्णम् आददे_ऽस्त्रम् महस्त्र-वित् उदगुर्_गरुड-अस्त्रेण सौपर्णा: पर्वता इव ॥३२॥

rAjA vidUratha

—an astra Master—

took.up the astra sauparNa,

laden with many garuDa Snake-eater missiles,

mighty as mountains

~VA vidUratha, knower of great astras, released now sauparNa astra, spitted out by garuda astra, sauparNa birds were like mountains

*AS. SauparNa and GaruDa are the same astra – both refer to GaruDa the famous eagle who was the sworn enemy of snakes. From this astra, birds arose (udagur garuDa-astreNa sauparNAH) which were like mountains (in size).

~vlm.32. The armigerous Vidúratha who was equally skilled in arms, had then recourse to his Garúda or serpivorous weapons, which fled like mountainous eagles to all sides.

 

काञ्चनी.कृत-सर्व.आशा: सर्व.आशा-परिपूरका: पक्ष-पर्वत-सम्रम्भ-जनित-प्रलय-अनिला: ॥३३॥

the sky is golden everywhere,

spilling in all directions with those astra wings that beat the air,

and shake the mountains like the Doomsday Wind

~vlm.33 Their golden wings spread in the sky on all sides, and embroidered the air with purple gold. The flapping of their wings wheezed like a breeze that blew the poisonous vapor far away into the air.

 

घोण​-अनिल​-जव​-आकृष्ट​-श्वसद्-भुजग​-मण्डला: महा-घुरघुर​-आराव​-पूरित​-अम्भोधि-खण्डका: ॥३४॥

ghoNa-anila-java-AkRSTa-zvasad-bhujaga-maNDalA: | mahA-ghuraghura-ArAva-pUrita-ambhodhi-khaNDakA: ||34

the serpents' noses hissed their wind

:

that ring of snakes made a great growl,

like waves grinding against the shore

~vlm. ... resembling the gurgling of waters in a whirlpool in the sea.

 

ससुपर्ण-घनो_अपात्तम् सर्प-ओघम् भू-प्रपूरकम् कष्टम् शल-शलायन्तम् अगस्त्य इव वारिधिम् ॥३५॥

sasuparNa-ghano_'pAttam sarpa-ogham bhU-prapUrakam | kaSTam zala-zalAyantam agastya iva vAridhim ||35

a cloud of vultures ate the nest of snakes that filled the battleground,

sucking.up all those horrors

just as agastya sucked.up the sea

~AS: The eagle-cloud (sasuparNa-ghanaH) drank up (apAt) the flood of serpents (sarpa-oghaM) covering up the grounds (bhU-prapUrakam) and somehow slithering about (kaSTam zala-zalAyantam); just as agastya had drunk up the ocean.

 

सर्पकम् बल-निर्मुक्तम् भू-मण्डलम्_अराजत चिरात्_तम् _वनि-रन्ध्रम्_इव निर्वारि-राशि ॥३६॥

sarpakam bala-nirmuktam bhU-maNDalam arAjata | cirAt tam avani-randhram iva nirvAri-rAzi ca ||36

freed from its covering of snakes,

the battlefield again grows bright

&

in a while

the circle of the horizon looks like coming rain

.

~vlm. .. like the surface of the earth reappears to light after its deliverance from the waters of the deluge.

 

ततस् तद् गरुड-आनीकं क्वाप्य् अगच्छद् अदृश्यताम् ।

tatas tad garuDa-AnIkam kvApy agacchad adRzyatAm |

दीप-ओघ इव वातेन शरद् एव_अब्द-मण्डलम् ॥37॥

then the garuda formation quite disappeared

—a row of lamps extinguished by the wind—

or else a cluster of clouds in autumn

~vlm.37 Afterwards the army of garuDas disappeared from sight like a line of lamps put out by the wind, and like an assembly of clouds vanishes in autumn.

 

वज्र-भीत्येव पक्ष-ओघ-पर्वत-प्रकर: पुर: ।

vajra-bhItyeva pakSa-ogha-parvata-prakara: pura: |

स्वप्न-दृष्टं जगद् इव संकल्प-पुर-पूरवत् ॥38॥

svapna-dRSTam jagad iva saMkalpa-pura-pUravat ||38

||

as when the flying mountains flew from indra's fearsome thunderbolts,

the town became a world of dream,

full of imaginary citizens

.

~vlm.38 They fled like flying mountains fearing the bolts of thundering _indra_, and vanished like the impermanent world seen in a dream, or as like a castle in the sky built by fancy.

~VA. as many flying mountains from fear of lightning, like town seen in dream, like world full of imaginary cities? (continuation of description in previous verse how garudas disappeared?) ~AS. Yes, indeed! In the first line, the word is vajra the famous weapon of Indra. It is alluding to the mythological stories when Indra attacked flying mountains. The second line is talking about two separated things: world seen in a dream imagined city flooded by imagination.

 

ततस्_तमो अस्त्रम्_असृजत्_सिन्धुर्_अन्ध-अन्धकारदम् तेन_अन्धकारो ववृधे कृष्णो भूजठर.उपम: ॥३९॥

and blinding darkness spreads everywhere,

dark as the dark heart of the Earth

~vlm.39 Then King Sindhu shot his shots of dark smoke that darkened the scene like the dark cave under the ground.

 

रोदोरन्ध्रे प्रविसृत एक-अर्णव इव_अभवत् ।

rodorandhre pravisRta eka-arNava iva_abhavat |

मत्स्या इव_अभवन् सेनास् ताराश् च मणयो_अभवन् ॥40॥

matsyA iva_abhavan senAs tArAz ca maNayo_'bhavan ||40

at midheaven it is all ocean

—the armies are like schools of fish—

and the stars

are wishing-stones

sunk in the ocean.sands

.

~vlm.40 It hid the face of the earth and sky like flood waters reaching to the sky’s face. It made the army appear like a shoal of fishes, and the stars like gems shining in the deep.

~AS: It (the darkness) became like an ocean entered into the hole between the earth and the sky. The armies were like the fish in this oceans and the stars like the jewels (in the ocean). • The ocean is supposed to be full of jewels, of course; recall the samudramanthana.

 

अन्धकार-प्रवृत्तेन मषी-पङ्क-अर्णव.उपमम् कज्जल-अचल-संभार-उद्भूत-कल्प-अनिलैर् इव ॥४१॥

andhakAra-pravRttena maSI-paGka-arNava.upamam | kajjala-acala-saMbhAra-udbhUta-kalpa-anilair iva ||41

then there comes a blinding darkness

black as eyeshadow,

or a sea of mud,

or a sootblack mountain burdened.with bursts of kalpa.Doomsday wind

~vlm.41 The spreading darkness appeared like a sea of ink or dark mud, or like the particles of Anjana Hill blown by the breeze over the face of nature.

 

अन्ध-कूपे निपतिता इव_असन्-सकला: प्रजा: ।

andha-kUpe nipatitA iva_asan-sakalA: prajA: |

कल्पान्त इव संशेमुर् व्यवहारा दिशं प्रति ॥42॥

kalpAnta iva saMzemur vyavahArA dizam prati ||42

the people seem as.if fallen into a blind well,

they are still and motionless

—just like Doomsday!—

a stillness

stretching everywhere

~vlm.42 All beings seemed to be immersed in the sea or darkness, and to lose their energies as in the deep gloom of midnight.

~AS. All people lay about as if in a dark well, All activities everywhere stopped as if at the end of the Kalpa (doomsday).

 

विदूरथो ऽथ मार्तण्डम् दीपम् ब्रह्माण्ड-मण्डपे अस्त्रम् मन्त्रविदम् श्रेष्ठ: सृष्ट्वा मन्त्रो व्यचेष्टयत् ॥४३॥

seemed like the Death.egg sun in the brahma.egg temple

as he spoke the mantra that sent it forth

~vlm.43 Viduratha the best of the most skilful in ballistics, fired his sun-bright shot which like the sun illumined the vault of the sky.

~VA. now vidUratha, noble knower of mantras for astras, in brahma-anda, released light of sun by uttering the mantra.

~AS. The astra is called mArtaNDa dIpa "Sun lamp" astra. He released it in the sky referred to as brahmANDamaNDapa.

 

अथ_उदित-तमो-ऽम्भोधिम् अर्क-अगस्त्यो गभस्तिभि: अपिबत्_कृष्णम्_अम्भोदम् शरत्.काल इव_अमल: ॥४४॥

atha_udita-tamo-'mbhodhim arka-agastyo gabhastibhi: | apibat_kRSNam_ambhodam zarat.kAla iva_amala: ||44

now

that sun arose,

and his rays drank.up the darkness

—it was like agastya drinking the ocean—

as the autumn sky grew clear

~vlm.44 It rose high amidst the spreading darkness like the sun with his effulgent beams, and dispelled the shades of darkness, as autumn does the rainy clouds.

 

अन्धकार-अम्बर-उन्मुक्ता विरेजुर् अमला दिश: ।

andhakAra-ambara-unmuktA virejur amalA diza: |

भूपते: पुरत: कान्ता इव रम्य-पयोधरा-: ॥45॥

bhUpate: purata: kAntA iva ramya-payodharA-: ||45

the blind sky cleared,

and shone spotlessly everywhere.

the clouds

were like the breasts of nursing girls,

the retinue of an EarthLord

~vlm.45 The sky being cleared of its veil of darkness, manifested itself with its reddish clouds that resembled the ruddy bodices of maidens before the king.

 

ययु: प्रकटताम् अन्तर् अखिला वन-राजय: लोभ-कज्जल-जालेन मुक्ता इव सताम् धिय: ॥४६॥

and there project unto our sight

rows after row of trees

just as when,

from-out.of the sooty net of greed

the thoughts of all good men are freed

now

overcome with anger,

sindhu released the frightening rAkSasa missile

the Demon, a mantra.powered superweapon

~vlm.46. Now the landscape appeared in full view, like the understanding (good sense) of men coming in full play after the extinction of their avarice. 47. The enraged Sindhu then laid hold on his dreadful demon rakshasa weapon, which he instantly flung on his enemy with its bedeviled darts.

~AS. All the rows of forests came into full view, as if the minds of the good people were freed from the soot of avarice.

 

उदगुर्_भीषणा दिग्भ्य: *पुरुषा वन-राक्षसा: पाताल-गज-"फूत्"कार-क्षुब्धा इव महार्णवा: ॥४८॥

~AS. The idea is that the 8 elephants who hold the world up blow – that is the phUt-kAra and this causes the big waves in the world’s oceans. Again, AB has supplied just the right hint, VLM did not get it either(:-)) There might be typo here. It is paruSA not puruSA. The word means "harsh". Thus full meaning is: From all directions, there arose fierce forest demons (vanarAkSAH), like the angry oceans (disturbed) by the blowing of the directional elephants under the earth.

sAvarta-vRttayo vyomni bhIma-cItkAra-"TAm"kRtA: | agni-dAhA mahAdhUma-vilolA iva sa-ulmukA: ||50

bright as a red topknot,

smoky,

sputtering "chaTa.chaTa",

fire

licked

with its sticky tongue

everywhere

in whirlpools churning in the air,

with fearsome sounds of "cheet" and "tumm",

the conflagration spread its smoke,

sparking to torches everywhere

49 They were like the flames of bright fire, with their long licking tongues and ash-colored and smoky curls rising like white hairs on the head, and making a chat-chat sound like that of moist fuel burning.

50 They wheeled round in circles in the air with a horrible tang-tang noise, now flaming as fire and now fuming as smoke, and then flying about as sparks of fire.

 

दंष्ट्रा-बिस-अङ्कुर-आक्रान्त-मुख-पङ्क-आक्ष-देहका: ।

daMSTrA-bisa-aGkura-AkrAnta-mukha-paGka-AkSa-dehakA: |

उदिता लोम-जम्बाला दुष्पल्वल-तटा इव ॥51॥

uditA loma-jambAlA duSpalvala-taTA iva ||51

between the teeth

a lotus.shoot,

a mud-eyed body has hair like sprouting weeds

on the the muckish shore of a cesspool

~vlm.51 With mouths beset by rows of sprouting teeth like lotus stalks, and faces defaced by dirty and moldy eyes, their hairy bodies were like stagnate pools full of moss and weeds.

 

निगिरन्त: प्रधावन्तो गर्जन्त: सर्जिता इव

जटाजाल-तडित्-पुञ्जा जलदा: सजला इव 52

devouring, flowing, roaring, the battle surged.

the sky was like the tangled mass of a mendicant's hair,

flashing with lightning, a stormy cloud

~vlm.52 They flew about and flashed and roared aloud like dark clouds, while the locks of hairs on their heads glared like lightning in the midway sky.

 

एतस्मिन्-न् अन्तरे तस्मिंल् लीलानाथो विदूरथ:

नारायण-अस्त्रं प्रददे दुष्ट-भूत-निवारणम् 53

nArAyaNa-astram pradade duSTa-bhUta-nivAraNam ||53

—in the middle of all this—

lIlA's Lord vidUratha sent.forth

Manway,

the nArAyana Weapon that drives.away all wicked things

~vlm.53 At this instant Viduratha, lIlA’s husband, sent forth his Narayana weapon that had the power to suppress wicked spirits and demons.

 

उदीर्यमाण एव_अस्मिन् मन्त्र-राजे_ऽस्त्र-राजय: राक्षसानाम् प्रशेमुस्_ता अन्धकार इव_उदये ॥५४॥

udIryamANa eva_asmin mantra-rAje_'stra-rAjaya: | rAkSasAnAm prazemus_tA andhakAra iva_udaye ||54

each one was ordered.forth by its ruling mantra,

and the streaking line of astra.s

drove.off the rAkSasa Demons,

as sunrise drives the dawn.struck dark away

~vlm.54 The appearance of this magic weapon made the bodies of the rakshasa demons disappear like darkness at sunrise.

 

प्रमुष्ट-राक्षस-अनीकम् अभवद् भुवन-त्रयम् शरदि_इव गत-अम्भोदम् व्योम निर्मलम् आबभौ ॥५५॥

pramuSTa-rAkSasa-anIkam abhavad bhuvana-trayam | zaradi_iva gata-ambhodam vyoma nirmalam Ababhau ||55

the autumn clouds are gone.away,

the sky is quite immaculate

अथ सिन्धुर्_मुमोच_अस्त्रम्_आग्नेयम् ज्वलित-अम्बरम् जज्वलु: ककुभस्_तेन कल्प-अग्नि-ज्वलिता इव ॥५६॥

atha sindhu:_mumoca_astram Agneyam jvalita-ambaram | jajvalu: kakubha:_tena kalpa-agni-jvalitA: iva ||56

but now sindhu looses the astra

agneya the Fiery,

and it fills the sky with flame,

it sets fire to the horizon,

full Doomsday Fire

~vlm.56 Then Sindhu discharged his fire arms which set fire to the sky, and began to burn down everything like the all destroying conflagration of the last day.

 

धूम-अम्बुद-भराच् छन्ना बभूवु: सकला दिश:

गगने प्रोत-पाताल-तिमिर-आकुलिता इव 57

gagane prota-pAtAla-timira-AkulitA iva ||57

and that smoke-bearing cloud covers the ten directions of the sky:

it's dark as hell

~vlm.57 They filled all the sides of air with clouds of smoke that seemed to hide the face of heaven under the darkness of hell.

 

बभूवुर् ज्वलित-आकारा गिरय: काञ्चना इव ।

babhUvur jvalita-AkArA giraya: kAJcanA iva |

प्रफुल्ल-वन-नीरन्ध्र-चम्पक-ओघ-वना इव ॥58॥

praphulla-vana-nIrandhra-campaka-ogha-vanA iva ||58

now it's a volcano of gold,

or a blossoming forest glade

with everywhere the bright yellow champaka flowers—a flood of gold

!

~vlm.58 They set fire to the woods in the hills which burned like mountains of gold, while the trees appeared to bloom with yellow plumeria flowers all around.

 

ययुर् व्योम-अद्रि-दिक्-कुञ्जा ज्वाल-अजाल-जटालताम् ।

yayur vyoma-adri-dik-kuJjA jvAla-ajAla-jaTAlatAm |

कुङ्कुमेन_उत्सवे मृत्यो: समालब्धा इव स्रज: ॥59॥

kuGkumena_utsave mRtyo: samAlabdhA iva sraja: ||59

||

and so the sky blazed,

and the mountains with their groves:—

the four directions were a fiery net of hair

dressed with red kumkuma powder

at a feast of red.garlanded death

.

~vlm.59 All the sides of the sky above, and the hills, woods and groves below, were enveloped in the flames, as if they were covered under the red powder of Holi with which Yama, the God of the underworld, was playing over the plain.

 

ज्वलिता जनता _एक-शङ्किनी सा नभ:-स्पृशा सहस्र-आकृति-नौ-वेग-चलितेन_इव सागरात् ॥६०॥

jvalitA janatA ca_eka-zaGkinI sA nabha:-spRzA | sahasra-AkRti-nau-vega-calitena_iva sAgarAt ||60

and

the people were scorched with fear

by that sky-touching fire that flew across the sky,

like a thousand ships speeding across the ocean

~vlm. The heaven-spreading flame burnt legions into a heap of ashes like an undersea fire consumes entire ships and fleets in the sea.

 

जित्वा रिपुम् पुनर्_असौ यथा प्रहरते तथा वारुणम् वि.ससर्ज_अस्त्रम् पूजयित्वा विदूरथ: ॥६१॥

jitvA ripum punar_asau yathA praharate tathA | vAruNam visasarja_astram pUjayitvA vidUratha: ||61

then vidUratha once again followed.up with another strike,

sending the astra vAruNa the Watery

as his obeisance

~vlm.61 As Sindhu continued to dart his fire arms against his defeated adversary, Viduratha let off his watery arms with reverential regard.

~AS. Having defeated the enemy-the Agni–astra (jitvA ripum) as one hits back (asau yathA praharate tathA ) the short meaning is "in retaliation ". The vAruNa-astra was sent with a special worship rite, not just casually thrown!

 

आययु: सलिला-पूरास् तमः-पूरा इव_अभित: ।

अधस्ताद् ऊर्ध्वतो दिग्भ्यो द्रव-रूपा इव_अद्रय: ॥62॥

~AS. Your second line translation needs to be amended thus: "the heavenly weapon which protects from floods, and executed it using an arrow." This reference to "arrow" is spurious, all of them seem to be executed by an arrow. Tradition says that the mantra used is the main power, it can be loaded onto an arrow or a darbha or even a handful of water. Some material needs to be essential, however. Nobody just recites a mantra and hopes to get results. Indeed there a story of one agniveza whose water pot was emptied by his enemy and hence could not use his astra!!
