एते चान्ये च बहवस् तत्र भस्मत्वम् आगता: । प्रविशन्त: प्रयत्नेन शलभा इव पावके ॥2॥
During one great battle, there was a terror of rushing men and elephants,
many men crying "me.first-me.first" fell on their way, crushed by elephants.
And all these people—so many!—have become ashes, who entered
into the conflict:
many moths drawn by the light into the flame.
अत्रान्ये मध्य-देशीया जना नोदाहृता मया । तान् इमाञ् छृणु वक्ष्यामि पक्षांल् लीला-महीभृत: ॥3॥

_guda-s, nobles of _azvagha, brilliant and bright; and mad _madhyamika-s;
सालूका-कोद्यमालास्या दौर्-ज्ञेया: पिप्पलायना: । माण्डव्या: पाण्डु-नगरा: सौग्रीवाद्या गुरु-ग्रहा: ॥5॥
an army of the _saaluka-s and _kodyamaalaasya-s,
and those hard-to-know _pippalaayana-s;—
and _maandavya-s, and _paandava-s, and the _saugriiva-s, hard-to-hold;—
पारियात्रा: कुराष्ट्रश् च यामुनोदुम्बरा अपि । राज्याह्वा उज्जिहानाश् च काल-कोटिक-माथुरा: ॥6॥
_paariyaatra-s, and _kuraashtra-s, _yaamuna-s, and _udumbara-s,
and _raajyaahva-s and _ujjihaana-s, _kaala-s, _kotika-s, _maathura-s;—
पाञ्चाला धर्मारण्याश् च तथैवोत्तर-दक्षिणा: । पाञ्चालका: कुरुक्षेत्रास् तथा सारस्वता जना: ॥7॥
there were men of the _panchaala-s, from the _dharma Forest—
both north and south _paanchaalaka-s;—
also _kuru.kshetra-s, and saarasvata-s.
अवन्ती-स्पन्दन-श्रेणी-कुन्ति-पाञ्चनद-ईरितै: । स्पन्दमाना विद्रवन्ती निपपात महाभृगौ ॥8॥
The line of _avantii chariots from _kunti and _paancha.nada,
flowing and wheeling,
fall with a great noise on _mahaa.bhrgu Hill;
कोश-ब्रह्म-अवसानाः_च च्छिन्ना: वस्त्रवती-जनै: । भूमौ निपतीता: सन्त: मिलिता: मत्त-वारणै: ॥9॥
and the _braahmana force also meet their end,
fallen to the ground,
trampled by angry elephants ridden by noblemen in silk.
शुरा दाश-पुरा: शस्त्र-निकृत्त--उदर-कन्धरा: । बाणाक्सितिभिर् आक्रम्य योजिता योजने ह्रदे ॥10॥
Heroes from the Ten Cities
—some with wounded breasts, some with chopped necks—
were finished by the _bana.kshiti-s:
pursued, they were caught at a pool, after running a league or more.
दीर्ण-उदर-विनिर्यात-स्वान्त्र-तन्त्री-नियन्त्रिता: । शान्तिका: शान्त-संचारा: पिशाच-इश् चर्विता निशि ॥11॥
उद्रवैर् भद्रगिरिभि: संग्रामाध्वर-दीक्षितै: । क्षोणि-गर्तेषु निक्षिप्ता मरगा: कमठा इव ॥12॥
Their bellies spouting guts and veins,
the _zaantika-s are resting in peace—
and the _pizaacha Zombies will have a feast to chew tonight.
Uproarious _bhadra.giri-s, unfailing and skilled in battle,
cast them into the ditches like turtles tumbled in a trap.
प्रद्रुता विद्रवद्-रक्ता विद्रावित-महारय: । दण्डिका-स्थानिलोद्धूता हैहयैर् हरिणा इव ॥13॥
Running and dripping blood, chased by powerful _dandika-country warriors, as.if pursued by a fierce wind
the _haihaya-s are frightened deer.
दन्ति-दन्त-विनिर्भिन्ना दरदा दलितारय: । नीता रक्त-महानद्या द्रुमाणाम्_ पल्लवा इव ॥14॥
Gored by the tusks of elephants, the _darada-s, crushed by their foes,
are borne in a cataract of blood
like the fallen branches of trees.
नाराचैश् चर्विताश् चीना जीर्णा जर्जर-जीविता: । जहुर् जल-निधौ देहान् भार-भूतान् इव स्थितान् ॥15॥
The _chiina-s looking like old men,
chopped and chewed by falling missiles,
cast their bodies in the waters, as.if to give them their burden;—
कर्णाट-सुभटोड्डीन-कुन्ताकलित-कन्धरा: । भग्ना नलद-शूराश् च तारका-निकरा इव ॥16॥
_karnaata warriors meet upflying iron javelins that break their necks;
and _nalada heroes are burned, as.if by falling stars.
करीन्द्र-मकर-व्यूह-रंहः-संहत-हेतय: । केशाकेशि-कृतारम्भा विनेदुर् दाशका: शका: ॥17॥
दशार्णा: पाश-निर्भुक्त-शृङ्खला जाल-भीरव: । निलीना रक्त-जम्बाले वैतसास्तिमयो यथा ॥18॥
In Elephant and Crocodile formations the opposing troops
having thrown all their javelins
meet hand.to.hand, and _zaaka-s tear at the hair of _daazaka-s.
Herds of bull elephants are like
schools of sea-serpents wounded by the flying javelins.
_zaaka-s tear at the hair of _daazaka-s
while _dazaarna-s, sucked into snares, terrible nets,
are encompassed in the blood-river,
caught like fish.
गुर्जरानीक-नाशेन गुर्जरी-केश-लुञ्चनम् । विहितम्_ तङ्गणोत्तुङ्गनासि-शङ्कु-शतै रणे ॥19॥
The _gurjara force is destroyed;
_gurjarI ladies shave their heads in grief.
The ready _tangana-s raise swords and pikes by the hundreds.
सिषिचु: शस्त्र-कर्णौघाद् बिन्दुभ्यो निगडा गुहान् । शरधारा-वनानीव वीर-हेति-प्रभाम्बुदा: ॥20॥
They scatter floods of missiles,
bows raised to their ears,
the _nigaada-s firing-on _guha-s:
a forest of archers under a shining cloud of heroic javelins.
भुशुण्डी-मण्डलोद्द्योत-श्यामार्कोत्पात-भीरुषु । आभीरेष्व् अरय: पेतुर् गोगणा हरितेष्व् इव ॥21॥
There is a flashing mandala of crowbars,
brighter than the sun,
flying fearsomely from the _abhiira-s—
and their foes fall like a herd of cattle before thieves.
कान्त-काञ्चन-कान्तासीत् ताम्र-संग्राम-वाहिनी । भुक्ता गौड-भटेनाङ्ग नख-केश-निकर्षणै: ॥22॥
The _taamra-battle-group, arrayed in golden armor
—such beauty!—
are eaten-up by the _gauda braves—dragged from the field by the hair.
रणे नगनयासंख्य-कवच्-चक्र-निकृन्तनै: । तङ्गणा: कणश: कीर्णा: कङ्क-गृध्रेषु भासकै: ॥23॥
And countless elephants are led to battle,
and cut down.
Whirling discuses fell the _tangana-s,
a fragmented and scattered force—
like herons ripped by vultures' beaks.
लगुड-आलोडन-उड्डीन-म्_ गौड-म्_ गुड-गुड-आरवम् । श्रुत्वा गान्धार-गावो_अग्रे दुद्रुवुर् द्रविडा इव ॥24॥
Shaking and whirling their stone clubs,
the _gauda-s gurgle their battle-cries of "Gooda-gooda";
hearing which,
the _dravida-s run before them, like a stampeding _gaandhara herd.
आकाशगार्णव-प्रख्यो वहच् छक-कदम्बक: । अकरोत् पारसीकानाम्_ घन-नैश-तमो-भ्रमम् ॥25॥
Sky-going waves,
the flying _zaaka-s give the _paarasiika-s a thick night of dark confusion.
मन्दराहननोड्डीन-स्वच्छ-क्षीरार्णवोदरे । वनानीवायुधान्य् आसञ् छत्रु-प्रालेय-सानुनि ॥26॥
The mountain battlefield is as white as _mandara in the ocean of milk
with flying weapons thick as the mountain forests that hide the foe.
यद्_अम्बुदैर्_इवोड्डीनम्_ शस्त्र-वृन्दैर्_नभोङ्गणे । तद्-दृष्टम्_ वीचि-वलनैर्_लोलै: प्लुतम्_इवार्णवे ॥27॥
The multitudes of weapons that cloud the air
appear like waves dancing upon the sea
to the sky-roving watchers from above.
शत-चन्द्रम्_ सितच्छत्रै: शरै: शलभ-निर्भरम् । शक्तिभि: किल नीरन्ध्रम्_ दृष्टम् आकाश-काननम् ॥28॥
The sky contains a hundred moons—
an umbrella of cold arrows.
A locust-cloud of lances falls in attack on the sky-forest.
वीरासव-समाक्रन्द-कारिण: केकयै: कृता: । कङ्कै: कङ्क-कुलाक्रान्त-व्योमोद्धूलित-मस्तका: ॥29॥
Those heroes, drunk on war, crying, lamenting, loud as elephants
—kekaya-s against _kanka-s—
they sprinkle the sky with severed heads.
किरात-सैन्य-कन्याणाम्_ कामम्_ कलकल-आरवै: । अङ्गैर् अनङ्गताम्_ नीत्वा भैरवैर् इव गर्जितम् ॥30॥
The tiny _kanya soldiers cry their blood-lust with "kala-kala";
as.if the god of love were disembodied by fierce _bhairava-s.
काशैस् तद्-देहका: क्रान्ता अदृश्यैर् मायया खगै: । निर्धूत-पक्षै: क्षुभितै: पवनैर् इव पांसव: ॥31॥
The _kaaza-s
dressed in kaaza grass
appear like feathered birds
flapping their arms like wings in their alarm,
raising clouds of dust in the wind.
उन्मत्ता: सु-विनिर्धूता-स् त्यक्त-हेति-रण-अम्बरा: । नार्मदा नर्म-निर्मातृ ननृतुर् जहसुर् जगु: ॥32॥
Crazed in pursuit, the _naarmada-s' javelins fill the battle-sky,
as they make merry,
as they prance
and dance
and laugh and run about.
प्रक्वणत् किंकिणी-जालम्_ शक्ति-वर्षम् उपागतम् । साल्वबाणानिलोद्भूतम् अगमत् पृषद्-आकृति ॥33॥
The _saalva-s charge with tinkling bells,
after a shower of fire-arrows
that spangles the sky like comets.
शैब्यस् तु खण्डिता: कौन्तैर् भ्रमत् कुन्तैर् विघट्टिता: ।
शवी-भूता दिवम्_ नीता दृष्टा विद्याधरा इव ॥३।३७।३४॥
The _zaibya-s, pierced with javelins by the _kaunta-s,
run heavenward.
As corpse-beings they take the form of newly-born _vidyaadhara-s.
धराधरण-धर्मिण्या धीरया हीन-सेनया । लुण्ठिता: पाण्डु-नगराश् चलनोल्लास-मात्रत: ॥35॥
The strong supporting force of heroic _hiina troops come on.
The cities of the _paandu-s are quickly and easily plundered.
तम्_ देहका: पाञ्च-नदैर् दलिता मत्त-काशिभि: । कुन्त-दन्त-द्रुम-उद्दमा नगा इव मतङ्ग-जै: ॥36॥
The corpulent _tandehaka-s
are crushed by _paancha.nada-s
and crazed _kaazi-s;
and the _kunta tuskers deal with them as snakes are crushed by elephants.
ब्रह्मावत् सनका नीपैश् चक्रै: कृता गता महीम् । सहया: क्रकचोत्कृत्ता वृक्षा: कुसुमिता इव ॥37॥
The _brahmAvat-sanaka-s are brought-down to earth
by the _niipa discuses,
and _sahaya-s are severed like flowering trees brought-down by saws.
श्वेतकाकाननम्_ लूनम्_ कुठारैर्जठरेरितै: । एतद् ददाह पार्श्व-स्थो भद्रेश: शर-वह्निना ॥38॥
The heads of the white _kaaka-s,
lopped by battle-axes,
fast grow old.
Their neighboring _bhadra Lord is burned in a blaze of fire-arrows.
काष्ठ-योधे निरालानम्_ मग्ना जीर्णा मतङ्गजा: । लयम् आजग्मुर् आयुद्धम् इद्धेग्नाव् इन्धनम्_ यथा ॥39॥
Those warrior-troops once let-loose are like old elephants stuck in the mud,
brought to destruction,
overcome like kindling in a blazing fire.
मित्र-गर्तास् त्रिगर्तात् ता भ्रमित्वोर्ध्वम्_ तृणोपमम् । विविशुर् व्यस्त-मूर्धान: पातालान्तम्_ पलायितुम् ॥40॥
_mitra.garta-s meet _tri.garta-s, and they are scattered all.about like straw.
With severed heads they seek the gates of hell as refugees.
मन्दानिल-चलाम्भोधि-भासुरे माघधे बले । निर्मग्ना वनिला मन्दा: पङ्के जीर्ण-गजा इव ॥41॥
It is a gentle, wind-rocked sea of terror.
The _maaghadha forces drown the weak _vanila-s
like aging elephants stuck in mud.
चेदयश् चेतनाम्_ जह्नुस् तङ्गणानाम्_ रण-अङ्गने । पुष्पाणाम्_ पथि शीर्णानाम्_ सौकुमार्यम् इवातपा: ॥42॥
The _chedi-s lose lives battling _tangana-s.
They are fallen blossoms scattered about the road,
fading in their beauty.
कौसला: पौरवारावम् असहन्तो ऽन्तका इव । तैर् उन्मुक्त-गदा-प्रास-शर-शक्त्य्-अनिवृष्टय: ॥43॥
The troops from _kosala,
hearing the war-cries of the _paurava-s,
heard death approaching,
with unloosed maces, roundspears, arrows, and javelins.
बभूवुर् भल्ल-कृत्ताङ्गा_अ.विस्मया विद्रुम-द्रुमा: । इव_अद्रौ विद्रवन्त्य् आर्द्र-सान्द्रा-सृक्-सूर्य-मूर्तय: ॥44॥
Their bodies riddled with fire-arrows,
their force like a hill stripped of trees,
they make a run for the mountain—
like a setting, sizzling sun.
नाराच-ओघ-महाहेति-मारुताभूत-मूर्तय: । बब्रह्मुर् भ्रमर-अनीक-भासुरा जलदा इव ॥45॥
Arrows in floods,
and huge missiles catapulting in a great wind
fill the sky:
it is a swarm of terribly angry black bes.
शरधारा-धारा मेघा: शरोर्णापूर्ण-मेषका: । शर-पत्रावृता वृक्षा भ्रेमुस् तद्-गर्जना-गजा: ॥46॥
A cloud of archers bend their bows—
their feathered arrows are a flock of sheep,
or leaves of a forest.
Elephants roam and roar.
वन.राज्य-जरा.जीर्णा: कन्दाक.स्थल-जन्तव: । अत्रुटन्-परम-आकृष्टा: पेलवा: इव तन्तव: ॥47॥
The _vana-raajya Foresters are old and ailing,
like the line of Kandaka Plainsmen:
and they are as delicate as aging cloth
that splits with just a little pulling,
just a little push.
शाल-ताल-वनम्_ प्राप्य जनता-वलनम्_ वनम् । भुजावकर्तनम्_ चासीद् उत्तालम्_ स्थाणु-काननम् ॥49॥
Those people are a forest of _zaala and Palm trees, where they met.
Their branches shorn,
it is indeed a field of arms—
a formidable fixed forest.
ननर्दुर् नन्दनोद्याना-सुन्दर्यो मत्त-यौवना: । वनोपवन-देशेषु मेरोर् वीर-वराश्रिता: ॥50॥
And those watching above—
they shriek,
the beauties of the _nandana Garden,
mad with youth,
from the wood-lands and green groves of Mount Meru—
each choosing her brave champion.
तावत् तारारवम्_ रेजे सैन्य-काननम् उत्तमम् । यावन् न पर-पक्षेण प्राप्तम्_ कल्पानलार्चिषा ॥51॥
They roared an overwhelming roar—
that excellent soldier-forest—
and they are not taken,
there is no roaring of the _kalpa Fire.
छिन्ना: पिशाच-संयुक्ता भूतापहृत-हेतय: । पातयित्वा ययु: कर्णान् दशार्णास् तर्णका इव ॥52॥
Beset by the _pizaacha-s,
chopped,
their spears stolen by the _bhUta-s,
they rush in flight from the _karna-s:
the _dazaarna-s can run like calves!
जहुर् भग्नेश्वरा: कान्तिम्_ ताम्_ जिगीषवन्-औजसा । कासय: कमलानीव शुष्क-स्रोतस्विन्-औजसा ॥53॥
The burned Lords give.up their brightness
to those who coveted their strength:
the _kaasi-s are like lotuses drained of their sap in a dry pond.
तुषाका मेसलै: कीर्णा: शर-शक्त्य्-असि-मुद्गरै: । विद्रुता नरकै: क्षिप्ता: कटकच्छलना अपि ॥54॥
_tushaka-s mix with _mesala-s,
with arrows, spears, broadswords, and clubs.
Wounded by _naraka-s,
they flee;
the shifty _kataka-s also.
कौन्त-क्षेत्रा: प्रस्थ-वासै: स्थित्वा योधिभिर् आवृता: ।
गुणा इव खलाक्रान्ता गता व्यक्तम् अशक्तताम् ॥३।३७।५५॥
The troops from _kaunta country
are surrounded by the dwellers in _prastha—
how often are the virtuous overcome by wickedness!
द्विपयो बाहुधानानाम्_ क्षणेनादाय मस्तकम् । भल्लै: पलाय्याशु गता विलून-कमला इव ॥56॥
The elephant corps are adept at severing heads from bodies
with crescent-flat.head arrows in fast flight:
it's like plucking lotuses!
मिथ: सारस्वता नीत्वा आदिनान्तम्_ कृताजय: । पण्डिता इव वादेषु नोद्विग्ना न पराजिता: ॥57॥
The opposing _saarasvata-s
meet one-to-one
with no winner—
like _pandita-s making arguments
that neither party hopes to win.
खर्वगा: खदिता: क्षुद्रा यातुधानै: परावृता: । तेज: परमम् आजग्मु: शान्ताग्नय इवेन्धनै: ॥58॥
The hobble-gaited,
eaten-up,
puny _yaatu.dhaana-s,
though they are surrounded,
come to great heat,
like dying fires getting fresh fuel.
कियद् आख्यायत एतज्
जिह्वा-निचयै: किलालम्-आकुलित: ।
वासुकिर् अपि वर्णयितुम्_
न समर्थो रणवरम्_ राम ॥59॥
What more is there to tell of this story ?
Even with all his many heads,
the multi.tongued serpent _vaasuki
could not tell all about this battle, _raama!

Just two comments. aniloddhUta is an adjective for the deer not the Dandiki warriors. Also, the word needs to break as daNDikA-sthA aniloddhUtA and there would be no sandhi as written. On the other hand, without sandhi, the meter breaks! Hence the AB commentary suggest "sandhir ArSaH" - a euphemistic way of saying "the sandhi is mistaken!"

Without thi-s, I cannot see any meaning for the first word taM. All
commentaries are silent on this(:-)) The tandehaka-s who were boldly fighting with
their lances, elephant tusks and treelimbs (kunta-danta-druma-uddAma) were
pulverized (dalitAH) by the pAJcanada and wild kAzis elephants pulvarize trees.

**vlm.49. The multitude of stalwart warriors meeting in the field, had given it the appearance of a forest of tála [**tula?] and tamála trees; but their hands being lopped off by weapons, they made it appear as a mountanous wood, with its clumps of tapering pine trees.
**DC - Waving
forest of people was like forest of zala and tala, with trunks devoid of
branches, - great firm forest. AS->Here the AB commentary is well worth
reading! It is explaining that the gathered masses of people (janatAvalanam)
was like a forest of zAla and tAla trees (zAlatAlavanam vanam) and due to the
war causing branches to be chopped off the zAla-s became like standing tAla-s
(bhujAvakartanam uttAlam) and when toppled the tAla-s became like a stone
garden (uttAlam sthANukAnanam)! The zAla and tAla are both tall trees, but zAla
has branches, while tAla is more like a pole. Thus, the war turned zAla-s into
tAla-s and tAla-s when toppled into lying stonelike structures.

of great warrior forest was not as great as fire of destruction, taking up by
the enemy lines. **AS-> Again, the main analogy is missed. The great roar
prevailed (tAra-Aram_ tAvat reje) until the burning flame of the end
of the world (yAvat kalpAnta-arciSA) in the form of the the opponents
(parapakSeNa ) was not met
(na prAptam). This is actually a passive construction saying "until they
were not met by ...".

**DC - here is no detectable metre here! How it can be chanted then?
**AS->There
indeed is a well known meter here! It is called AryA. The problem is that it is
not an akSaragaNavRtta, but a so-called mAtrAvRtta. That means you count the
mAtrAs in each half of each line (two lines, four halves). To count a mAtrA,
count 1 for laghu and 2 for guru. You should get a count of 12,18,12,15. You
need to note that the line halves are not properly encoded and the syllable at
the end of a line can be guru in count, even though it appears laghu. The
correct break should be: kiyad AkhyAyata etaj, ... &c. You did not mention
the meaning. It is kind of nice: Even though relating different pieces (kiyad
etad AkhyAyataH) with multiple tongues (jihvAnicayaiH), indeed even vAsuki is
very tongue tied ( vAsukirapi kila alam AkulitaH), thus, even he cannot
describe this great battle (raNavaram_ varNayitum na samarthaH) O Rama!
