नभः-स्थलाद् गिरि-ग्रामं गच्छन्त्यौ कञ्चिद् एव ते

ज्ञप्ति-चित्त-स्थितं भूमितलं ददृशतुः स्त्रियौ ॥३।२५।१॥

Out of the sky they descended toward a certain mountain town:

in  visionary forms the two women came down to earth.

ब्रह्माण्ड-नर-हृत्पद्मं दिग्-अष्टक-दलं बृहत्

गिरि-केसर-संबाधं स्वामोद-भर-सुन्दरम् ॥३।२५।२॥

They saw,

within the brahma.Egg,

the heartLotus of nara*, and

the Eight Directions* were its eight petals extending. The mountains

resembled its many pistils exuding a sweet aroma.

* nara - the primeval Man. Eight Directions - N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW; the Ten Directions add Above and Below.  

 

सरित्-केसरिका-नाल-मध्ये ऽवश्याय-बिन्दुकम्

शर्वरि-भ्रमरी-भ्रान्तं भूतौघ-मशक-आकुलम् ॥३।२५।३॥

Its rivers ran like golden lotus-hairs amid the falling flakes of snow,

and bees bumbling in the evening,

mosquitoes humming in a horde.

अन्तर्-गुण-गणाकीर्णं सुरन्ध्रैः सुषिरैर् वृतम्

उह्यमान-पयः-पूरैर् दिवसालोक-कान्तिमत् ॥३।२५।४॥

Within its outspread rings there ran a channel, flowing with sap.

It was a blossom overrun with nectar, that was bright as the light of day.

**vlm.4 Its long stalks, white as bright daylight, are composed of fibers serving for food, and of tubes conducting the drink to living beings.

 

रसार्द्रं खे भ्रमद् धंसं रात्रि संकोच भाजनम्

पाताल पङ्क निर्मग्न नागनाथ मृणालकम् ॥३।२५।५॥

It was like a swan drifting in the moist nectar of the sky:

it drifted in the close of evening,

its root sinking down through the mud

to the Netherworld of the Serpent Lord.

कदाचिद् आस्पदाम्भोधि-कम्प-कम्पित-दिग्-दलम्

अधो-नाल-गतानन्त-दैत्य-दानव-कण्टकम् ॥३।२५।६॥

Sometimes it makes the earth quake,

as its petals stretch in all the eight directions.

But its understalk is supported by a serpent.

Its thorns are demon dAnava‑s.

असुर-स्त्रैण-वल्लर्या संभोग-सुकुमारया

प्राप्य भूभृन्-महाबीज-हृदयं भूत-बीजया ॥३।२५।७॥

The Darkling women, those dear daughters, sinuous as creeping vines,

begot the seed, the heart of the mountain, the seed of the Beings.

जम्बूद्वीप इति ख्यातां विपुलां तत्र कर्णिकाम्

सरित्केसरिकानालां नगरग्रामकेसराम् ॥३।२५।८॥

This is jambU.dvIpa Roseapple.Land, the pericarp of the lotus,

where the rivers are the stalks,

and the cities and towns are the filaments.

कुल-शैल-ईश्वरोत्तुङ्ग-बीज-सप्तक-सुन्दरीम्

मध्यस्थोच्च-महामेरु-बीजाक्रान्त-नभ-स्थलीम् ॥३।२५।९॥

Surrounded by seven mountain.ranges,

members of his family,

the great Mount meru stands amid them,

under the downturned bowl of the sky.

सरः-प्रालेय-कणिकां वन-जङ्गल-धूलिकाम्

स्थलेष्वामण्डलान्तस्थ-जन-जालालि-मण्डलम् ॥३।२५।१०॥

The lakes are dewdrops,

and the woods and jungles pollen;

and upon the tablelands, standing within the maNDala,

the people cluster like a humming swarm of bees.

तां योजन-शत-कारैः प्रतिराकं प्रबोधिभिः

सागरैर् भ्रमरैर् व्याप्तां दिक्-चतुष्टय-शालिभिः ॥३।२५।११॥

This Land is many hundreds of leagues around,

and is pervaded everywhere with seas

like a swarm of bees filling four quarters of the earth.

दिग्-दलाष्टक-विश्रान्त-ससुर-अम्बोधि-षट्पदाम्

भ्रातृभिर्_नवभिर्_भूपैर्_नवधा परिकल्पिताम् ॥३।२५।१२॥

The Regents of the Eight Directions rest in the outer Sea,

the Brightling Sea of Wine,

while nine brother EarthLords divide the Earth nine ways.

लक्ष-योजन-विस्तीर्णाम् आकीर्णां रजो-लवैः

नाना-जनपद-व्यूह-स्थिरावश्याय-सीकराम् ॥३।२५।१३॥

A hundred thousand leagues spread.out beneath the covering sky,

its nations like dust, or a mist.

द्वीपात् तु द्विगुणं मानं लवणार्णव-लेखया

दधत्या वलितां बाह्ये प्रकोष्ठम् इव कम्बुना ॥३।२५।१४॥

The briny ocean

which measures twice as large

wraps it outside, as a bracelet encircles the wrist.

ततो ऽपि द्विगुणं देहं दधत्या वतयाकृतिम्

जगद्-भूतलता-व्याप्तां शाकाख्य-द्वीप-लेखया ॥३।२५।१५॥

Next is zAka.dvIpa Teakwood.Land,

twice the size again,

its form pervaded by a blowing wind.

ततो ऽपि द्विगुणाकारं धारयन्त्या वेष्टिताम्

प्रत्यग्रक्षीरपूर्णाब्धिलेखया स्वादु-शीतया ॥३।२५।१६॥

Then twice the size of it again,

surrounding it, is said to be

the kSIra-abdhi Sea of Milk, so sweet and cool.

ततो ऽपि द्विगुणाकारं धारयन्त्योपवेष्टिताम्

नाना-जनालंकृतया कुशाख्य-द्वीप-लेखया ॥३।२५।१७॥

And twice the size of it again,

contained in a surrounding sea,

with many various peoples,

is said to be kuza.dvIpa, the Land of Grass.

ततो ऽपि द्विगुणाकारं धारयन्त्या वेष्टितम्

दध्यब्धि-लेखया नित्य-संतर्पित-सुरौघया ॥३।२५।१८॥

ततः क्रौञ्चाभिध-द्वीप-लेखयैवं-प्रमाणया

वेष्टितां खात-रचया नवां नृप-पुरीम् इव ॥३।२५।१९॥

And twice the size of it again,

surrounded by an ocean that

is said to be dadhi.abdhi, the Sea of Curds,

the delicacy of the gods,

is what is said to be krauJca.dvIpa Curlew Land,

of like extent,

circled by a moat, like a royal city.

ततो_अपि घृताम्भोधि-लेखयैवं-प्रमाणया

ततो_अपि शाल्मली द्वीप लेखया मल-पूर्णया ॥३।२५।२०॥

Then next.to that moat is said to be

ghRta.ambhodhi the Sea of Ghee,

of like measure;

and then is said to be zAlmalI.dvIpa Redthorn Land,

and it is full of evils.

ततः सुर-महाम्भोधि लेखया पुष्प शुभ्रया

शेषस्य देह लतया हरि-मूर्तिम् इवावृताम् ॥३।२५।२१॥

Here is said to be the great Ocean of the sura Brightling gods,

that is like a belt of flowers,

or the vinelike sinuous body of the sepent zeSa encircling the form of hari.

ततो गोमेदक-द्वीप-लेखयैवं प्रमाणया

इक्ष्वब्धि-लेखया अप्य्_एवं हिमवत्-सानु-शुद्धया ॥३।२५।२२॥

ततो_अपि पुष्कर-द्वीप-लेखया द्विगुणास्थया

अन्ते स्वादु-उदक-अम्भोधि-लेखया_एवं-प्रमाणया ॥३।२५।२३॥

And then is said to be gomeda.dvIpa Jewel Land, of a like extent;

and then is said to be the ikSu.abdhi Sugar Sea,

bordered by snowy mountain peaks;

and then from there is said to be puSkara.dvIpa Flower Land,

twice as great in its extent,

within what is called the svAdUdaka Sweetwater Sea, of like extent.

ततो दशगुणेनाथ पाताल-तल-गामिना

निखात-वलयेन_उच्चैः श्वभ्र-संभार-रूपिणा ॥३।२५।२४॥

And then tenfold they saw below

the paths to hell sunk in the ring,

to a cave of extensive form—

-24-

**sv. ... a cosmic hole.

 

पाताल-गामि-मार्गेण वलितां भयदामना

एतस्मात् खलु सर्वस्मात् ततो दश-गुणोच्चया ॥३।२५।२५॥

This is Hellgoer Road, a fearsome path,

leading from here

indeed leading from there and everywhere,

and thus tenfold in amplitude.

आव्योमसु चतुर्-दिक्षु श्वभ्र-संभार-भीषया

अर्ध-उन्म्लान-तमो-रूप-लग्न-नील-उत्पल-स्रजा ॥३।२५।२६॥

Vast as the four directions is that cave,

a gathering of fear,

covered in darkness like a half-withering lotus in the dark.

नाना-माणिक्य-शिखर-कह्लार-कुमुदानया

लोक-आलोकाचल-उत्ताल-विपुल-उद्दाम-मालया ॥३।२५।२७॥

And then there are bejeweled peaks that shine as bright as lotuses,

and here lokAloka Mountain,

half in the day, half in the night.

वलितां त्रिजगल्-लक्ष्मी-धम्मिल्लवलनाम्_इव

एतस्माद् एव सर्वस्मात् ततो दश.गुण-आत्मना ॥३।२५।२८॥

Surrounded by the triple worlds,

it is a ring of braids on lakSmi's head,

from here and there and everywhere,

thus with a tenfold character*; -28-

* Like the Ten Directions.

 

अज्ञात-भूत-संचार-नाम्ना_अरण्येन मालिताम्

एतस्माद् एव सर्वस्मात् ततो दश.गुण-आत्मना ॥३।२५।२९॥

नभसेव चतुर्-दिक्कं व्याप्ताम् अतुल-वारिणा

एतस्माद् एव सर्वस्मात् ततो दश.गुण-आत्मना ॥३।२५।३०॥

it is trodden by no known beings,

from here and there and everywhere —

thus with a tenfold character;

within the spacious sky,

in all the four directions,

it was as.if flooded by the flow of limitless water,

from here and there and everywhere,

thus with a tenfold character.

मेर्व्-आदि-द्रावणोत्केन ज्वाला-जालेन मालिताम्

एतस्माद् अथ सर्वस्मात् ततो दश-गुणात्मना ॥३।२५।३१॥

मेर्व्-आद्य्-अचल-सङ्घातं नयता तृण-पांसुवत्

वहताद्रीन्द्र-विस्फोट-कारिणा जव-हारिणा ॥३।२५।३२॥

निःशून्यत्वाद् अशब्देन मरुता परितो वृतम्

एतस्माद् अथ सर्वस्मात् ततो दश-गुणात्मना ॥३।२५।३३॥

They wished to visit Mount meru and other mountains crowned with flame,

from here and there and everywhere,

thus with a tenfold character,

but meru and its Ranges

blew about

like grass or dust,

traversed the emptiness,

crashing,

crackling,

rushing at speeds surpassing speed;

out of the emptiness,

without a word,

wind blowing all-about,

from here

and there

and everywhere,

thus with a tenfold character,

परितो वलितं व्योम्ना निःशून्येनैकरूपिणा

अथ योजनकोटीनां शतेन घनरूपिणा

व्याप्तं ब्रह्माण्ड-कुड्येन हैमेन_अपि द्वि.पर्वणा ॥३।२५।३४॥

with space surrounding all around —

with emptiness of single form —

a hundred thousand leagues around, was the outer double bracelet,

the shell of the brahma.Egg.

इति जलधि-महाद्रि-लोकपाल-

त्रिदश-पुराम्बर-भूतलैः परीतम्

जगद्-उदरम् अवेक्ष्य मानुषी द्राग्

भुवि निज-मन्दिर-कोटरं ददर्श ॥३।२५।३५॥

So it was:

having seen the whole womb of the world,

with all its seas and mountain ranges,

and the Regents of the Winds,

and thirty cities of the gods,

they swiftly returned,

and came again to lIlA's own home.

**vlm.3.25.1 THESE ladies then alighted from the sky in their forms of intelligence, and passing over the mountainous regions, saw the habitations of men on the surface of the earth.

**vlm.3.25.2. They saw the world situated as a lotus, in the heart of the first male Nara (Brahmá); the eight sides forming the petals of the flower, the hills being its pistils, and the pericarp containing its sweet flavour.

They saw, within the BrahmanEgg, the heartLotus of Nara*, and

the Eight Directions were its eight petals extending. The mountains

**vlm.3.25.4. Its long stalks which are as white as the bright daylight, are composed of fibres serving for food, and of tubes conducting the drink to living beings.

**vlm.3.25.5. It is wet with moisture, which is sucked by the sun, resembling

the swan swimming about in the air. It folds itself in sleep in the darkness of night in absence of the sun.

**sv.3.25.5-14 It was like the lotus of the heart, with the directions for its petals, the netherworld for the mud in which it grows, held by the divine serpent which is the root.

 

It was like a swan drifting in the moist nectar of the sky: it drifted in the close of evening, its root sinking down through the mud to the hell of the Serpent Lord.

**vlm.3.25.6. The earth like a lotus is situated on the surface of the waters of the ocean, which make it shake at times, and cause the earthquake by their motion. It is supported upon the serpent Vásuki serving for its understalk, and is girt about by demons as its thorns and prickles.

**sv.3.25.6-14 It was like the lotus of the heart, with the directions for its petals, the netherworld for the mud in which it grows, held by the divine serpent which is the root.

**DC - sometimes its petals of directions shake because of the roughness of the ocean abode or because troubled demons shake the stalk. AS-> Sometimes the petals of directions shaking due to waves in the underlying ocean, with numerous demons like thorns on its lower stems. JD has related ananta to the famous serpent, but it could also be simply used as infinite - or numerous.

 

Sometimes it makes the earth quake, as its petals stretch in all the eight directions. And its understalk is supported by a serpent, its thorns the demon Danavas.

**vlm.3.25.7. The mount meru (and others) are its large seeds, and the great hives of human population; where the fair daughters of the giant race, propagated (the race of men), by their sweet embrace (with the sons of God). * This means the demons to have first peopled the borders and skirts of the earth. See Hesiod. Works and Days Book I. V 200. * That the meru or Altain chain in Soythia, was the great hive of human race is an undisputed truth in history. So Moses speaks of the giant race in Genesis chapter VI. V 2 and 4. "And there were giants in the earth in those days".

**DC - What is being meant here??! Every word seems to have a meaning, all together - it is gone :o(( In the centre, here is a great world-base (mountain), grown with vines of female asuras with fair daughters of pleasure and seed of beings.

**AS. The female demons are compared to be parts of a vine which was ready for intercourse and having acquired the seed of kings (bhUbhRt-mahAbIjam became impregnated with life (bhUtabIjayA). Thus, it is describing the demons being born due to kings.

**sv.3.25.8-14 In this lotus, they saw what is known as Jambudvipa, in which there are very many countries and continents. It is surrounded by a salty ocean.

**DC - In eight leaves-directions rests ocean with suras, by 9 brothers-earth lords divided into 9. Cannot make sense of SaTpadAm and all... Is it 8 petals-directions resting like drunk bee??? Or! is it earth like a bee drowned in wine-ocean with 8 petals of directions... 8o))) OR Does it relate to 6 2-fold increments described further??? But here are more than 6 layers... The Regents of the Eight Directions rest in the outer Sea, said to be of Wine, while nine brother EarthLords divide the Earth nine ways: -12- a hundred thousand leagues outspread under the covering sky, its nations like ice in a pond; -13-

 

**DC. (earth) is spread out by thousand miles and is full of different human races and nations, many like drops in rain.

**AS. I agree with you, except lakSa is 100 thousand and yojana is not exactly a mile. It varies between 2 and 8 miles(:-)) Also, you don't have the covered with dust particles (AkIrnAm ca rajolavaiH). These can also be interpreted as life since rajas is related to life. The next line might be taken to described what kind of life,

**vlm.3.25.34. It spreads around to an unlimited extent, and encompasses

the worlds as a golden circlet encircles the wrist, (i.e. the belt

of the zodiac).
