*The Goddess sarasvatii said: *
अस्मिन्_रणवरे राजन्_मर्तव्यम् भवताधुना । प्राप्तव्यम् प्राक्तनम् राज्यम्
सर्वम् प्रत्यक्षमेव ते ॥1॥
*In this great battle, Your Majesty, you are about to die;*
*and then, milord, to return to your former realm.*
*All of this will appear to you.*
कुमार्या मन्त्रिणा च_एव त्वया च प्राक्तनम् पुरम् ।
आगन्तव्यम् शवी-भूतम् प्राप्तव्यम् तत्-शरीरकम् ॥2॥
*The minister and his daughter will come with you to your former city,*
*once you have taken your corpse.body for embodiment.*
आवाम् याव: यथा_आयातम् वात-रूपेण च त्वया ।
आगन्तव्य: स देशः_तु कुमार्या: मन्त्रिणा_अपि च ॥3॥
*We two will go just as we came,*
*taking the form of wind;*
*and you, the minister, and his daughter,*
*will come unto that country too.*
अन्या_एव गतिर्_अश्वस्य गतिर्_अन्या खर-उष्ट्रयो: ।
मद-स्विन्न-कपोलस्य गतिर्_अन्या_एव दन्तिन: ॥4॥
*Just so the horse goes his way,*
*there's another way for ass or camel,*
*and another too for a rutting elephant.*
*vasiSTha** said:*
प्रस्तुता: इति कथा यावत्_मिथस् मधुर-भाषिनो: ।
तावत् प्रविश्य संभ्रान्त: उवाच_ऊर्ध्व-स्थित: नर: ॥5॥
*As she was giving this account in her mellifluous voice,*
*just then,*
*entering in confusion,*
*a man spoke, from the saddle, thus:*

देव सायक-चक्र असि-गदा-परिघ-वृष्टिमत् । महत्-परबलम् प्राप्तम्_एक अर्णव इव

*there have been showers of missiles:*
*discuses, and swords, maces, and clubs*
*sent by a mighty foe:—*
*a sea of weaponry!*

गदा-शक्ति-भुशुण्डीनाम् वृष्टिम् मुञ्चति तुष्टिमत् ॥7॥
नगरे नग-संकाशे लग्नो_अग्निर्_व्याप्त-दिक्-तट: ।
दहंश्_"चट.चट"-आस्फोटै: पातयत्य् उत्तमाम् पुरीम् ॥8॥
कल्प-अम्बुद-घटातुल्या व्योम्नि धूम-महाद्रय: ।
बल-उत्प्रोड्डयनम् कर्तुम् प्रवृत्ता गरुडा इव ॥9॥
*Insatiable,*
*the showers of maces, and spears, and crowbars *
*are fierce as the _kalpa wind*
*that shatters mountains at the end of time!*
*Within the city*
*it is as within a mountain that's on fire—*
*everywhere burning with a "chata-chata" crackle—*
*tumbling-down.*
*It's like the _kalpa sea,*
*the spacious sky with great mountains of smoke swiftly soaring,*
*like the wings of vishnu's own mighty _garuda.*
*vasiSTha said: *
स.संभ्रमम् वदत्य्_एवम् पुरुषे पुरुष-आरव: ।
उदभूत्_पूरयन्-न्_आशा बहि: कोलाहलो महान् ॥10॥
*Then*
*as he spoke*
*noises arose from all the fearful citizens,—*
*filled the sky with hullaballoo.*
बलाद्_आकर्ण-कृष्टाणाम् धनुषाम् शर-वर्षिणाम् ।
बृंहताम्_अति.मत्तानाम् कुञ्जराणाम् तरस्विनाम् ॥11॥
*Bowstrings were drawn back to the archer's ear,*
*and then a twang!ing rain of arrows,*
*and the maddened cries of raging elephants.*
पुरे "चट.चट"-आस्फोटैर्_दहताम् जातवेदसाम् ।
पौराणाम् दग्ध-दाराणाम् महा-हलहल-आरवै: ॥12॥
*In the city, chata-chata*
*—the crackle of burning; _agni is in the field, reaping his harvest,—*
*and the hullaballoo of citizens.*
तरताम्_अग्नि-खण्डानाम् "टां"कार: कथितो रवै: ।
ज्वलितानाम् परिस्पन्दाद्_"धगधग्" इति च_अर्चिषाम् ॥13॥
*As flying fire crackled tum-tum,*
*the burning flames roared dhag-a-dhag.*
अथ वातायनाद् देव्यौ मन्त्री राजा विदूरथ: ।
ददृशु: प्रोल्लसन्-नादम् महानिशि महापुरम् ॥14॥
*So they watched through the window,*
*those two divine ladies,*
*with the minister, and the raajaa _viduu-ratha;*
*and so they witnessed*
*the crackling, glistering burning, in deep darkness, of the city.*
प्रलय-अनल-संक्षुब्ध-पूर्ण-एक-अर्णव-रंहसा ।
पूर्णाम् परबलेन_उग्र-हेति-मेघ-तरङ्गिणा ॥३।४३।१५॥
*It was a Doomsday Fire,*
*churning,*
*an overflowing ocean,–*
*fast flowing from the enemy line,*
*with waves of weapons falling.*
कल्पान्त-वह्नि-विगलन् मेरु-भूधर-भासुरै: ।
दह्यमानम् महाज्वालाज्वालैर् अम्बर-पूरकै: ॥16॥
*It was the Doomsday fire melting Mount Meru in its glory,*
*bright with flames,*
*in conflagrating sky.*
मुष्टि-ग्राह्य-महामेघ-गर्जा-संतर्जित ऊर्जितै: ।
घोरम् कल-कल आरावैर् मांसलैर् दस्यु-जल्पितै: ॥17॥
*Powerful, threatening, roaring,*
*the great clouds cried kala-kala—*
*raucously,*
*like a band of thieves.*
पुष्कर-आवर्त-संकाश-धूम्र-अभ्र-पिहित-अम्बरम् ।
प्रोड्डीन-हेम-अग्र-निभैर्_ज्वाला-पुञ्जैर्_निरन्तरम् ॥18॥
*Like _pushkara and _aavarta,*
*the smoky clouds covered the sky—*
*gold-tipped arrows,*
*a thick golden multitude of flickering flames.*
तरद्-उल्मुक-खण्ड उग्र-तारातरलित अम्बरम् ।
अन्योन्य-देश-सद्म ओघ-प्रज्वलज्-ज्वलन अचलम् ॥19॥
*Fragmenting flying firebrands broke,*
*spangling the sky like fearsome stars.*
*Below, the houses burned:*
*and they were like a mountain-range set afire.*
हत-सैन्य-पुरापातम् द्रुत अङ्गार अभ्र-कोटर-इ: ।
कर्कश-आक्रन्द-निर्दग्ध-लोक-पूग-उग्र-गर्जितम् ॥20॥
*Fallen-soldiers;*
*fallen city;*
*a fire-storm blazing everywhere;*
*and the harsh pitiful outcries of burning people—multitudes!...*
कृशानु-कण-नाराच-निरन्तर-तर अम्बरम् ।
बहु-हेति-शिलाजाल-लुठद्_दग्ध-पुर-उत्करम् ॥21॥
*The fire-arrows sparkle, crowding the sky.*
*Mountains of fallen missiles bury the burned city.*
रणद्-द्विरद-संघट्ट-कुट्टित उद्भट-सद्भटम् ।
विद्रवत्-तस्कर-च्-छेद-मार्ग-कीर्ण-महाधनम् ॥22॥
*Rushing elephants, clashing, pound the mighty warriors.*
*Fleeing thieves scatter their loot along the road.*
अङ्गार-राशि-निपतन्-नर-नार्य्-उग्र-रोदनम् ।
स्फुतच्-चटचटा-शब्द-प्रलूठत्-स्फुट-काष्ठकम् ॥23॥
*Firebrands are flying everywhere,*
*and men and women crying out their pain*
*amid the sparkling chattering everywhere.tossing flames.*
विपुल-अलात-चक्र ओघ-शत-सूर्य-नभ-स्थलम् । अङ्गार-शिखिर् आकीर्ण-समस्त-वसुधा.
तलम् ॥24॥
*Outspread fans of firebrands and discuses flood the sky*
*like a hundred suns.*
*Earth wears a charcoal head-crest: ash and embers scattered everywhere.*
दग्ध अग्नि-काष्ठ-क्रोंकार-रणज्-ज्वलन-वैणवम् ।
दग्ध-जन्तु-घन आक्रन्द-रुदत्-सकल-सैनिकम् ॥25॥
पांसु-शेष आत्त-राजश्री-वृद्ध-तृप्त-हुत-आशनम् ।
सकल-ग्रसन-आरम्भ-स.उद्योग-अग्नि-महाशनम् ॥26॥
*The crumbling burned wood,*
*the crackling burned bamboo,*
*the crowds of burned people,*
*loud cries rising from the burned soldiers,...*
*and ashes,*
*and treasures heaped-up,*
*the fire sated with sacrifice,*
*the all-devouring Fire Feast!*
यदृच्-छात्कार-डात्कार-कठिन-अग्नि-रटद्-गृहम् ।
अनन्त-जन्तु-भोज्य-अन्न-वह्नि-भुक्त-इन्धन-स्पृहम् ॥27॥
*Thus, crackling chat-a-dat, houses crashed noisily, and burned.*
*People burned,*
*fuel for the hungry fire.*
अथ शुश्राव तत्र_असौ गिरो राजा विदूरथ: ।
योधानाम् दग्ध-दाराणाम् पश्यताम्_अभिधावताम् ॥28॥
*And then he heard there the voices.*
*The raajaa _viduu-ratha heard*
*cries from the burning wives fleeing,*
*and cries from the soldiers looking ahead.*
हा मत्त-मरुद्-ऊर्ध्व-स्थान्_अङ्गार गृह-पादपान् ।
रणत्_खरखरम् नीरजालाम् आतप-पन्थिन: ॥29॥
*And O the crazed wind blew over the orchard with a rustling cry of war,*
*leaving no branch to shade*
*a traveler in that great heat.*
हा दग्ध-दारा: प्रालेय-शीता देहेषु दन्तिनाम् । मग्ना मनस्सु महताम् इव विज्ञान
-सूक्तय: ॥30॥
*O the burned wives, snow-cold in their bodies—*
*sunk in their thoughts like Sages singing Wisdom Songs.*
हा तात हेतयो लग्नास् तरुणी-कबरी-तृणे ।
ज्वलन्ति शुष्क-पर्ण उघा इव वीर अनिल-ईरिता-: ॥31॥
*O all the fiery missiles fired by heroes to the air;*
*and O the fire that clings to the braids of a girl, flaming like autumn
grass.*
आवर्तन-नदी-दीर्घा वहत्य् ऊर्ध्व-तरङ्गिणी ।
पश्य- इयम् धूम-यमुना व्योम-गङ्गाम् प्रधावति ॥32॥
*The long, churning river is flowing with rising waves—look at it!*
*A _yamunaa of smoke flows.forth that hides the Milky Way.*
वहद्-उल्मुक-काष्ठ-ऊर्ध्व-गामिनी धूम-निम्नगा ।
वैमानिकान् अन्धयति पश्य-अग्नि-कण-बुद्बुदा ॥33॥
*The flying firebrands in their flight made such rivers of smoke—*
*blinding the watching riders above in their skycars.*
*"Look at the fire-sparks glittering!"*
अस्या माता पिता भ्राता जामाता स्तनपा: सुते ।
अस्मिन्_सद्मनि निर्.दग्धा दग्धा_एव_असत् समिन्धने ॥34॥
*These mothers and these fathers,*
*these brothers and in-laws and nurslings and sons—*
*all in this fortress*
*burned,*
*mere kindling for a fire that is not so.*
हा हा हा आगच्छते शीघ्रम् एतद् अङ्गार-मन्दिरम् ।
इत: प्रवृत्तम् पतितुम् सुमेरु: प्रलये यथा ॥३।४३।३५॥
*"O! Oh!! Ohh!!!"—*
*coursing cries of grief there*
*quickly come to this burned house,*
*as it begins to fall–*
*it is like Mount _sumeru at Doomsday.*
अहो शर-सिलाशक्ति-कुन्त-प्रास-आसि-हेतय: ।
जाल-संध्या-अभ्र-पटलम् विशन्ति शलभा इव ॥36॥
*O the arrows,*
*and Oh the stones,*
*and Ohh the spears and javelins, roundspears, and swords:—*
*and the missiles cover the twilight like a cloud.*
हेति-प्रवाहा ज्वलनम् नभस्यन्त्याम् विशन्त्य् अहो ।
वडवानलम् उज्ज्वालम् अर्ण: पूरा इव- अर्णवात् ॥37॥
*The arrow-flow of flames within the sky*
*makes a deadly entrance.*
*O*
*it flames as the submarine fire flamed,*
*once,*
*when it flooded-up out of the bubbling ocean.*
धूमायन्ति महाभ्राणि ज्वाला: शिखरि-कोटिषु ।
सरसान्य् अपि शुष्यन्ति हृदयानि इव रागिणाम् ॥38॥
*Smoking great clouds,*
*flaming with koti.s of flickering thunderbolts,*
*making the lakes and rivers dry,*
*like the hearts of the passionate.*
आलानत्व-रुषा_इव_एता दन्तिभिर्_वृक्ष-पङ्क्तय: ।
स्फुरत्_"कटकट"-आरावम् पात्यन्ते कृत-चीत्-कृतै: ॥39॥
*The elephants grew angry at their hitching-posts—*
*the tuskers' trees made a cracking kata-kata noise,*
*attacked by maddened elephants.*
पुष्ट-पुष्प-फल-स्कन्धा गत-श्रीका गृह-द्रुमा: ।
गता निर्दग्ध-सर्वस्वा गृह-स्था इव दीनताम् ॥40॥
माता-पितृ-विनिर्मुक्ता बालकास्_तिमिर-आवलीम् ।
मग्नन्तो_अङ्गेषु रथ्यासु कुड्य-पातेन हा हता: ॥41॥
*Fields of flowers,*
*rich orchards of fruit,*
*all gone to burned-up.property,*
*like working-men to poverty;—*
*children abandoned by mother and father—*
*and night settling-down*
*on bodies in the roadways or under fallen walls,—*
*O the slain!*
वात-विद्रावितात् त्रस्यन् करिण्यो रण-मूर्धनि ।
पतद्-अङ्गारक-अगार-भारिण: कटु-कूजितम् ॥42॥
*They run with the wind,*
*they're fearful,*
*the elephants at the head of battle,*
*they flee the flaming sparks,*
*as houses burn,*
*sharply shrieking.*
हा कष्टम् असि-निर्भिन्ने स्कन्धे सन्न-दृढ उल्मुके ।
पतितो यन्त्र-पाषाण: पुरुषस्य अशनिर् यथा ॥43॥
*O the misery,*
*their shoulders slashed by swords,*
*dead under fallen flames and catapult-stones—*
*as fierce for men as indra's fast thunderbolt.*
गव अश्व-महिष इभ उष्ट्र-श्व-शृगालैडकैर् अहो ।
घोरै रणम् इव आरब्धम् मार्ग-रोधकम् आकुलै: ॥44॥
*The cattle, horses, buffalos, elephants, camels, and dogs,*
*—and jackals chasing the sheep—*
*O, Oh, the terror*
*—like a battle's charge—*
*as the road grows thick with those crowds.*
पटै: पटपटाशब्दजलजालालिमालितै: ।
आक्रन्दन्त्य: स्त्रियो यान्ति स्थलपद्माचिता इव ॥45॥
स्त्रीणाम् ज्वालालवा: पश्य लिहन्त्यलकवल्लरी: ।
कुर्वन्तो,अशोकपुष्पाभाम् करभा इव पन्नगी: ॥45॥
स्त्रीणाम् ज्वालालवा: पश्य लिहन्त्य् अलक-वल्लरी: ।

*The trickling pata-pata sound,—*
*as, garlanded with tears, they came along,*
*the weeping women were a heap of weeping lotuses.*
*On the women, the flickering flames*
*—"See how they lick the curling vines!"—*
*make hot bright red _ashoka-flowers.*
हा हा हरिण-शावाक्ष्य: पक्ष-लक्षण-पक्ष्मसु ।
कु-मार्गेश्व् इव विश्रान्तिम् एति कार्षानवी शिखा ॥47॥
*O! Oh! Ohh!!*
*those dear deer.corpse-eyes*
*—eyelashes like the wings of bees—*
*now on a bloody road she comes to rest,*
*dressed in her fiery head-dress.*
दह्यमानो विनिर्याति न कलत्रम् विना नर: ।
अहो बत दरु-च्छेदा: प्राणिनाम् स्नेह-वागुरा: ॥4॥
*Burning,*
*she won't go forth,*
*a wife without her man.*
*O lord! such are the snares of love that make us wood for the fire.*
हरी रभस-निर्लून-ज्वलद् अङ्गार-पादय: ।
प्लुष्ट-पुष्करक: कोपान् मग्न: पुष्करदम् सर: ॥49॥
*An elephant runs-from his flaming cuts,*
*with charred feet and scorched trunk,*
*angrily trumpetting,*
*jumping to drown in the cool lotus-pond.*
धूमो_अम्बुद-पदम् प्राप्य विलोल अन्तस् तडिल्-लत: ।
ज्वलद् अङ्गार-नाराच-निकरम् परिवर्षति ॥50॥
*The rolling smoke becomes a sea*
*—a smoky sea with fiery-bright lightning-bolts shot within—*
*a flaming flood of fire-arrows rains down.*
देव धूम-स्फुरद् वह्नि-कण आवर्त-वृत्तिमान् ।
स्थित आपीडवान् व्योम्नि रत्न-पूर्ण इव अर्णव: ॥51॥
*Milord, the smoke spouts sparks of fire,*
*churning whrlpools whirling the air,*
*like the sea showing its jewelry.*
गौरम्_अम्बरम्_आभाति ज्वाला-शिखर-तेजसा ।
मृत्युना इव उत्सवे दत्त: कुङ्कुम-अक्त-करण्डक: ॥52॥
*The golden.red sky shines with fire-flickering heat—*
*as after a death, the funeral is tinged with red.*
अहो नु विषमम् चेदम् वर्तते वृत्त-वर्जितम् ।
ध्रियन्ते राज-नार्यो_अपि वैरि-विरैर् उदायुधै: ॥53॥
*And now this wickedness:—*
*women*
*—even the Princesses—*
*are dragged.away by enemy soldiers,*
*their rising cutlasses erect.*
लोल-स्रग्-दाम-कुसुमैर् मार्ग-प्राकार-कारकै: ।
अर्ध-निर्दग्ध-कबरी-कीर्ण-वक्ष-स्थल-स्तना: ॥54॥
*Garlands of flowers are strewn about the mountain roads.*
*And half-burned-braids are strewn about their breasts, bare hills.*
आलोल अम्बर-संलक्ष्य-नितम्ब-जघन-स्थला: ।
पतन् माणिक्य-वलय-वलित अवनि-मण्डला: ॥55॥
*The mounds of their hips and buttocks*
*are like the rolling sky,*
*and all their fine jewels and bracelets are scattered to the horizon.*
छिन्न-हारलता-जाल-विक्र्ण-अमल-मौक्तिका-: ।
दृष्ट-अदृष्ट-स्तन-श्रेणी-पार्श्व-उद्यत्-कनक-प्रभा: ॥56॥
*It's like a broken-necklace,*
*scattering shining pearls, some seen, some not,*
*on that long line of breasts, rising like a golden mountain-chain.*
कुररी-कर्कश आक्रन्द-मन्दी-कृत-रन आरवा: ।
धार आवाह आस्रुत आराव-भिन्न-पार्श्व-विचेतना-: ॥57॥
*"Kwan-kwan" cries the osprey,*
*cries harsh and slow amidst the battle-roar.*
*And the streams flow from eyes that see the split sides of the senseless
dead.*
रक्त-कर्दम-बाष्प-अम्बु-क्लिन्न-ग्रन्थित-वासस: ।
भुज-मूल-अर्पित-भुजैर् नियमाना बलान् नृभि: ॥58॥
*Their bodies spotted with blood and tears that wet their twisted
clothing,—*
*linked arm-in-arm, subdued by men,—*
क इव अस्मिन् परित्राता स्याद् इत्य् आदीन-वीक्षितै: ।
उत्पल-आली- इव वर्षद्भि: परिरोदित-सैनिका: ॥59॥
मृणाल-कोमल-अच्छ-उरु-मूल-जालै: सु-निर्मलै: ।
स्वच्छ अम्बर-तलालक्ष्यैर् आकाश-नलिनीनिभा: ॥60॥
*"Who would be our rescuer? Who?"*
*Looking like misery,*
*they are bees buzzing blue lotuses when the rains come:*
*such are the tears of the warriors' women,—*
*their faces streaked with tears, stamens of lotuses, all most immaculate.*
*The clearest sky cannot be seen,*
*nor can the space-blue lotuses.*
आलोल-माल्य-वसन्-आभरण अङ्ग-रागा
बाष्प आकुल आतत-चल Âलक-वल्लरीका: ।
आनन्द-मन्दर-निरन्तर-मथ्यमानात्
काम अर्णवात् समुदिता इव राज-लक्ष्म्य: ॥61॥
*Playfully garlanded,*
*covered with jewels,*
*passionate limbs;*
*crowds of tears flowing past twining curls,*
*the stillness of the ocean of love is churned by the paddle of joy,*

"way the way" is a typo. gati probably refers to speed not way! I would
translate:
A horse's speed is different from (better than) that of an ass or a camel;

**vlm.4. Your courses thereto will be as slow or swift as those of horses,
elephants, asses, or camels, but our course is quite different from any of
these.
One goes way the way of the horse, and another the way of the ass and

disks, and swords and clubs, falling upon us as rain, from the hostile
forces, and they have been forcing upon us as a flood on all sides.

The translation seems to have caught most of the meaning, except for

Actually it should be one word with samAsa broken as:

**AS. This verse is indeed hard to analyze, but I think I have the
following alternative take on it. This is different from all commentaries
and worth further discussion and analysis: dagdhadArA(H) refers to the
fallen soldiers - one who lost everything! They are lying snow cold mixed
in with the bodies of the elephants (deheSu dantinAm). They are like the
vijJAnasUktaya: ( the principles of vijJAna ) in the minds of great
persons. As one should recall vijJAna is the knowledge concerning the
material world, it helps one to get over the world, but does not help one
reach the ultimate goal, that only comes with jJAna! Thus in the minds of
the great enlightened souls, the old good thoughts from vijJAna lie dead -
no longer functional or useful in the light of the ultimate jJAna. In this
analogy, the dead elephants might represent the remnants on the material
world itself!
**vlm.30. Woe for the burning of our wives, who were as cold as frost to
our bodies before (by their assuaging the smart of every pain); and whose
ashes now rest in our breasts, like the lime of shells, i. e. in the
sublimated state of spiritual bodies (súkshma-*dehas).

poem of the Book of Songs, the Classical collection of ancient Chinese
