the evening sun set on the fading glowing field of _astra Weapons,

sunk in the sea.

 

रण-रक्त-रुचिर् व्योम-दर्पण-प्रतिबिम्बिता जहौ सूर्य-शिरश्-छेदे संध्या-लेखोदभूत् क्षणम् ॥2॥

The rosy radiance of the field of battle,

covered with the shards of broken heads,

was reflected in the sky-mirror.

Night drew near.

 

भू-पाताल-नभो-दिग्भ्यः प्रलय-अब्धि-जल-ओघ-वत् समाजग्मुस् तनत् ताला वेताला वलया इव ॥3॥

Then from the sky, the Earth, and all its Hells,

gathering like the floods of Ocean at Doomsday,

they came together, clapping time,—

Zombies,

_vetaalas dancing in a ring.

 

मृष्ट-ध्वान्त-आसि-वलिते दिन-नागेन्द्रमस्तके संध्या-राग-अरुणं कीर्णं तारा-निकर-मौक्तिकम् ॥4॥

Like the face of an elephant besmeared with mud,

the day grew dark

and evening drew on,

colored with fiery stars flashing like pearls.

 

नि:सत्त्वेषु तमो-अन्धेषु रसना-रस-शालिषु संकोचम् आययुः पद्म-अमृतानां हृदयेष्व् इव ॥5॥

In the unsattvic pitch-darkness,—

it was like lotuses buzzed by bees,

closing their petals at night,—

the heart-lotuses of the dying.

**AS. This is a complicated analogy. On one hand, it is saying: In the lakes which cherish life (rasazAliSu) but now were devoid of life (niHsattveSu) and overcome with darkness (namo-'ndheSu), the lotuses closed up (padmA saMkocam AyayuH) as when hearts of the dead shrivel up. On the other hand, the army formations (called padma) which were fond of yelling(rasanA-rasa-zAliSu) as they became devoid of energy - or men (niHsattveSu) and blind with confusion (tamo'andheSu) got folded up (saMkocam AyayuH) as when hearts of the dead shrivel up.

 

मीलत्-पक्षाः क्षणात् सुप्ताः कृच्छ्र-प्रोच्छ्रित-कन्धराः कुलायेषु खगा आसञ् छव-अङ्गेष्व् इव हेतयः ॥6॥

Quickly they fell asleep,

the birds in their nests with wings folded about their necks—

and the decapitated corpses on the battlefield.

 

आसन्न-चन्द्र-सुभगा लोकाः कुसुम-पङ्क्तयः उल्लसद्-द्-हृदया जाता वीर-पक्षेष्व् इव श्रियः ॥7॥

The moon was beautifully near,

white as the lotuses below,

raising the hearts of heroes

high

that rose in their battalions.

 

रक्त-वारि-मयी सायम् अङ्ग-गुप्त-शिली-मुखा संकुचद् वक्त्र-पद्माभूद् रण-भूमिर् इवाब्जिनी ॥8॥

Over the blood-red sea,

evening  looked.down upon  folded arms hiding stone-cold faces.

O they lay upon the battle-ground like lotuses.

 

उपर्य् अभूद् व्योम-सरस्-तारा-कुमुद-मण्डितम् अधस् त्व् अभूद् वारि-सरः स्फुरत् कुमुद-तारकम् ॥9॥

Above, the sky was like a lake, with lotus-petal stars;

below, the lake was like a sky, sparkling with lotuses  as bright as stars.

 

तमस्य्_अपेत-भीतानि भूतानि मिलितान्य्_अलम् पयांसि_इव विसेतूनि प्रसृतानि दिशम् प्रति ॥10॥

In darkness,

they were free from fear,

those beings

who had closed their eyes,

sunk in the waters to which they had come from everywhere.

 

आसीद्_रणाङ्गणं गायद्_वेताल-कुल-संकुलम् क्वणत्_कङ्काल-काङ्क-स्थ-कङ्क-काकोल-केलिमत् ॥11॥

The battle-field was crowded with the singing, crying Zombie clan,

and jangling skeletons....

And herons and ravens,

sporting and waiting.

 

अथ काष्ठ.चिता-ज्वाल=सतार-अम्बर+भास्वरम् । पचत्-"पच-पचा"-शब्दि-मेदस्-मांस.मय-अनलम् ॥12॥

And then the wooden pyres burned bright,

starry with sparks, bright as the sun,

cooking:

a "pacha-pacha" sound, of crackling fat and meat on fire.

 

सर्वाङ्ग-अस्थि-स्फुट-अस्फोट-स्फुटच्-चिति-चय-उन्मुखम् वेताल-ललन-आरब्ध-जल-लीला-तिरोहितम् ॥13॥

As limbs and bones crackled and sparked and sizzled in the funeral pyres,

Zombies cavorted in the water, playing hide-and-seek.

 

श्व-काक-यक्ष-वेताल-ताल-कोलाहल-उल्बणम् गम-अगमेन भूतानां समुड्डीन-वन-उपमम् ॥14॥

There were dogs, and crows, and demons, and Zombies,—

a clapping dancing carnival coming and going....

All those beings were like an upflying forest.

 

रक्त-मांस-वसा-मेदो-हरण-व्यग्र-डाकिनि चर्वितासृग्-वसा-मांस-स्रवत्-सृक्कि-पिशाचकम् ॥15॥

Dreadful _daakinii-s were busy stealing the red meat,

glossy with its marrow-fat,

and _pizaacha-s chewed on the bloody flesh,

and sucked the marrow from the shattered bones.

 

मध्य-मध्य-चितालोक-प्रकटासृक्-शव-व्रजम् विरूपिकानीयमान-स्वांस-न्यस्त-महाशवम् ॥16॥

Amid the funeral pyres, gazing avidly at the corpses,

shape-shifters gathered,

hungry,

and shouldering the fallen flesh.

 

उत्ताण्डव-उग्र-कुम्भाण्ड-मण्डल-उड्डामर-उदरम् "छमिच्-छमित्"-प्रलापान्तं मेदो-असृग्-बाष्प-.अम्बुदम् ॥17॥

They danced the _taandava,

those fierce _kumbhaanda Bellyballs,

a crowd of haughty stomachs, chattering "chumm-i-chumm",

as a cloud of smoke carried the smell of fat and blood.

 

वहद्-रक्त-नदीर् अंहो-रूढ-भूचर-रूपिकम् वेताल-कुल-कङ्काल-कर्षणा-कुल-काकलम् ॥18॥

The fast-flowing red river was visited by EarthRovers.

The Zombie clan, a crowing crowd, were tugging at the skeletons.

 

मृत-इभ-उदर-मञ्जूषा-सुप्त-वेताल-बालकम् । विविक्त-एक-रण-उद्देश-पान-क्रीडा-स्थ-राक्षसम् ॥१९॥

The Zombie children took their nap in the warm bellies of elephants.

The _raakshasas had their own new battle over the feast of food and drink.

 

मत्त-वेताल-कलह-चिता-लात-रण-उज्ज्वलम् वहद्-रक्त-वसा-मिश्र-गन्ध-बन्धुर-मारुतम् ॥20॥

Blood-drunken Zombies fought beside the blazing pyres,

where drifting winds

carried the mixed aromas of baked blood and melted body-fat.

 

रूपिका-पेटिका-वान्ता-रणद्-रटरट-आरवम् अर्ध-पक्व-शव-आस्वाद-लुब्ध-यक्ष-उल्लसत्-कलि ॥21॥

Shape.shifter demons chortled their delight

with "rata-ratata",

fighting over the half-cooked corpse.meat

with the cavorting _yakshas.

**AS. The "rUpikA" demons were vomitting in boxes (peTikAvAnta)

with bubbling noises (AraNad-raTaratAravam).

 

तुङ्ग-वङ्ग-कलिङ्गाङ्गतङ्गणाङ्ग-लगत्-खगम् तारा-पातोपम-हसत्-संमुख-ज्वाल-रूपिकम् ॥22॥

And flying Imps attacked the flesh

of Vangas and Kalingas, and Tangana bodies.

They were like a night of falling stars that fell in fiery shapes

as they laughed out loud.

 

पतद्-वेताल-सोल्लास-मध्यस्थ-असृग्-विरूपिकम् पिशाच-आकर्णित-आभ्यर्ण-योगिनी-गण-नायकम् ॥23॥

Flying Zombies filled with delight,

and shape.shifters, knee-deep in blood, and _pizaachas were heard,

beside a gathering _yoginI flock.

 

प्रसृत-अन्त्र-महा.तन्त्री-प्राय-संपन्न-वादनम् पिशाच-वासना-उत्क्रान्त-पिशाची.भूत-मानवम् ॥24॥

The plucked guts sang in perfect tune, like a fine instrument.

Reborn in war as _pizaachas,

some men

vied with born _pizaachas for their blood-prize.

**AS. ... Men were overcome with pizAca-like desires (pizAca-vAsanA-AkrAnta) and as a result became pizAcas themselves!

 

रूपिक-आलोकन-आपूर्व-त्रास-अर्ध-मृत-सद्-भटम् क्वचिद् वेताल-रक्षोभिर् अपरीपूर्ण-मद्रकम् ॥25॥

Gruesomely ghastly shapes overflowed,

dead warriors everywhere.

Zombies and Demons made a most unbeautiful feast of them.

 

स्वरूपिकास्कन्ध-पतच्-छव-त्रस्त-निशाचरम् नभः संघट्टितापूर्व-भूत-पेटक-संकटम् ॥26॥

Borne on the shoulders of NightRovers, corpses slipped and fell away,

but were gathered in baskets by the demons watching from below.

 

अति.प्रयत्न-अपहृत-म्रियमाण-नर-अमिषम् स्व.भक्ष्य-अपेक्ष-पक्षेषु विक्षिप्त-शव-राशि-मत् ॥27॥

But some were overtaken by fatigue,

and dropped the dying flesh.

The pleasure was not worth their while;

they left the corpses in a heap.

 

शिवा-मुख-अनल-शिख-अखण्ड-उत्थ-मिति-रक्तगैः समुड्डीन-नव-अशोक-पुष्प-गुच्छम् इव_अभितः ॥28॥

The watering mouths of jackals

pulled at the hair,

and when they were done with tugging.at red veins,

they napped

and became a field of red _azoka blooms.

 

कबन्ध-कन्धरा-बन्ध-व्यग्र-वेताल-बालकम् यक्ष-रक्षः-पिशाचादि-कचद् आकाश.-उल्मुकम् ॥२९॥

The Zombie children played at fitting heads onto headless trunks.

_yaksha-s, _raaakshasa-s, _pizaacha-s

and all the other demons with their fiery torches were like stars in the sky.

 

आकाश-भूधर-निकुञ्ज-गुहान्तराल-पिण्ड-उपमण्डित-तमो-अम्बुद-पीठ-पुरम्

व्यालोल-भूत-रभस-आकुल-कल्प-वात-व्याधूत-लोक-करक-अण्डक-पेट-कल्पम् ॥30॥

The lowering sky and darkening mountains, thickets, and caves,

all fell into gloom as the atmosphere filled with rainclouds.

And the flying beings anxiously flew like a roaring

Kalpa-Wind come to shatter the Brahma-Egg at Doomsday.

With the advent of rising moon (Asanna-candra-subhagAH), people like lotuses (lokA: kusuma-paGktayaH) were excited - literally with blooming hearts- (ullasad-hRdayA: jAtAH), as the fortunes rejoice on the side of the brave. The last phrase is a bit involved to explain, but here is what I see. zrIya: might be a genetive sing. of zrI and might mean zriya: lokA: - the various Goddesses attendant to zrI. On one hand, it is a pond of lotuses (abjinI) which has acquired reddish water due to sunset (sAyam raktavArimayI) , it has hidden its bees (inside its lotuses - aGgaguptazilImukhA) whose face shriveled up (saMkucad-vaktra-padmA abhUt). On the other hand, it is the battle ground in the evening, with blood like water, with arrows (zilImukhAH) hidden in its grounds, which had actual faces instead of lotuses (vaktra-padmA) became shriveled up.

The battleground had sounds as if generated by a great lyre (mahAtantrI) formed from spilled guts (prasRta-antra). Men were overcome with pizAca-like desires (pizAca-vAsanA-AkrAnta) and as a result became pizAcas themselves!

**vlm.24. The pulling of the entrails (antras-ánts), vibrated as by striking the strings of wired instruments (tantras-or tánts); and the ghosts of men that had become fiends from their fiendish desires, fell a-fighting with one another.

**DC. Half dead yet alive warriors were terrified seeing demons-rupikas,

spoiling the feast of vetalas and rakshasas.**AS.First, there is a typo! aparipUrNa->aparIpUrNa. Of course, this causes a problem in interpretation since paripUrNa is not in the dictionary. Perhaps, that is why someone "fixed" it(:-)) However, the meaning of the whole verse is then hard to explain. Here is my solution: The great warriors were half-dead with fear (ardha-mRta-sadbhaTam) due to the fear from the startling stares of the rUpikAs (rupikA-Alocana-apUrva-trAsa); elsewhere (kvacid) festivities were crashed by vetAlas and rAkSas. The explanation of aparIpUrNa is this: apara=other.
aparIpUrNa=filled with others. (aparai: pUrNam) madraka=festivities (kalyANotsava: = according to AB commentary).

**DC. Raised hair on the heads of jackals was red with blood, as if their faces were surrounded by open red ashoka flowers.

**AS. Both translations have some "hair", which presumably came from the zikhA.
However, there is no hair here(:-)) anala-zikhA is a flame - like a tuft of hair on the fire!
It seems that the fire (anala) itself was missed because of the typo: zivAmukha-nala -> zivAmukhAnala [typo in KG and VLM] There were pieces of red meat falling off from mouths of jackals, as if embers from the flames of fires from their mouths; this made it (battleground) look like a bouquet of fresh azoka flowers.
