jd: SV has omitted this longish Canto in his abridgment, like many of the "kaavya" passages (the Classical style which is characterized by long compounds, sometimes extending to two lines of verse, often using obsolete terms in order to fit the meter).

Some readers may find grounds to be "offended" by the implicit racism of some passages, which portray indigenous tribes in the same way that 20th-century bigots would speak of American "niggers". This does not indicate bias on the part of the author(s), but is a reflection of the bias of the audience. Their treatment recalls Shakespeare's treatment of Shylock and the Jews. (We see it often, as in the description of a peasant village later on).

If you grow tired of this violent stuff, bear in mind that it is as relevant today as then, in a world where war is seemingly without end.

THE THIRD ASTRA WAR

vasiSTha said:

The winds blew,

and they brought a fog of wind-tossed blossoms,

scattered from a crowd of shaken trees,—

a fog that made a _liilaa-grieving dust.

They were like birds

—a confusion of flying trees, falling, smashing, pulverizing the city towers,—

a cloud-forest that shattered walls.

Blown by that terrifying wind,

viduu.ratha's chariot

then began to drift downstream.

It was like a raft of rotten deadwood.

_viduu.ratha, that master of mighty missiles, then released

_paarvata, the Mountain Missile

to counter all the winds and rain.

Faced with those mountains the great winds

came to a standstill.

It was like _viraaj setting consciousness to rest.

Soaring in midheaven, the rows of trees fell back to earth.

They were like a catastrophe of crows pecking upon a corpse-army.

"soot"!

"dat"!!

"bhomm"!!!

snorting, clanging, banging all around,

and wailing,

as city and suburbs and forest

all grew still.

Mountainous weapons flew the sky,

hither-and-yon.

Like autumn leaves they fell:

or like _mainaaka

sinking into the _sindhu Sea.

Now he empowered a fiery Thunderbolt astra.

And out.of that a host of Thunderbolts went.forth,

drinking the mountain darkness

like the fires of the Doomsday conflagration.

These falling Thunderbolts destroyed the Mountain missiles,

hewing.off the heads of hills,

like a hurricane stripping trees of fruit.

Then viduu.ratha released the _brahma missile

to subdue the Thunderbolts,

and when they met, both came.to

an explosive quiescence.

And now _sindhu sent.forth his blackest-black pizaacha.Monster astra—from which there emerged many lines of most frightening pizaacha.s.

As if in fear of sunset

the day entered the darkness as the pizaacha.s came.down to Earth

as.if carrying that darkness.

They come like columns of black smoke

—like soaring tossing palm-trees—

huge forms that, though clearly visible, cannot be held by any hand.

They look like

some spike-haired, skinny-limbed, scraggly-bearded,

black-bodied, unwashed, peasant-like night-rovers.

Fearful and stupid-looking,

they are up to nothing good.

They bear their cruel hammer-swords,

but look as poor as any villager.

They hang.around the trees and bogs and roadways,

they enter empty houses and homes.

They're ghosts that lick their lips like some black-bodied whore.

They make a swift and furious attack

against the forces of the enemy now dancing like trees in the wind:

weaponless in the field,

they shit and piss themselves

soaking their garments.

A line of kings

—pizaacha kings—

viduu.ratha subdues them all,

like a wise man who discerns mAyA.

And now the EarthLord empowers his own pizaacha.Monster astra,

and sends it at the hostile force.

Then to protect his forces from the Monsters,

angrily he returnes a _ruupika.Changeling astra.

These flying Changelings raise their heads,

with terrifying eyes sunk in their sockets, their butts big as banana-bunches.

Their youth's in tatters,

their soft limbs wrinkled,

their arses' glory gone,

their bellies swelling with passion.

Dark dusky bodies, they hold human skulls besmeared with blood.

Their mouths hold half-eaten meat,

and fresh blood flows from their sides.

They wiggle, twist, and turn,

bodies as hard as stone,

wry-faced,

with crooked backs and twisted legs and limbs.

They look like dogs, or crows, or owls,

with broad mouths and flat cheeks and bulging bellies,

and their hands were full of human skulls and guts.

The Changelings catch the Monsters

as men catch little boys,

and melt into them, making one body,

joined together,

dancing and singing with outstretched arms and mouths and eyes,

now hand in hand,

now chasing each.other,

at play.

They stick long tongues out.of disgusting mouths,

and lick the blood that streams from the dead bodies' wounds.

They dive into the pools of blood as thick as pools of ghee,

they scrambled in the blood-puddles

with playing feet, and uplifted arms.

They roll.about most playfully,

a crowd cavorting in the mix of meat and blood,

and make it swell

like Milk Ocean being churned by the _mandara strring-stick.

Once again he sent forth his mAyA-tools,

and this time carefully he sent

his _vetaala.Zombie weapon,

which made the dead bodies,

with or without their heads,

to rise up in their ghostly shapes.

The joined forces of Zombies, Monsters and Changelings

made a dreadful appearance as ugly as _kabandha*,

ready to destroy the Earth.

* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabandha

And now the EarthLord sent his own mAyA against sindhu.

He activated _raakshasa,

the Demon astra,

ready to conquer the Three Worlds.

These huge-bodied Demons rose.up high as the mountains,

and they seemed like hellish fiends

appearing from Netherworld in their horrid forms.

And now a mighty ruckus rose

–enough to terrify Brightlings and Darklings alike —

war-songs and war-dances by ther headless trunks of kabandha.s.

The vetaala Zombies, yaksha Protectors, _kushmaanda.s

together ate the fat and meat of the dead in a great feast,

and drank blood as their wine as they

continued in their dance of war.

Hopping and leaping, the _kuuzmaanda.s

in their war dance in streams of blood

splashed its scarlet drops into the air,

so that they seemed to make a bridge

into the crimson evening clouds

over the sparkling sea.
