The New Rule

 

vasiSTha said:

 

हतो राजा हतो राजा प्रतिराजेन संयुगे ।

इति शब्दे समुद्भूते राष्ट्रम् आसीद् भयकुलम् ॥1॥

"The King is dead, the King is dead,

the other King downed him at war!"—

such was the cry that overcame

the entire realm with growing fear.

 

भाण्ड-उपस्कर-भाराढ्यं विद्रवन् छकट-व्रजम् ।

स.आक्रन्द-आर्त-कलत्राढ्यं द्रवन् नागर-दुर्गमम् ॥2॥

पलायमान-साक्रन्दं मार्ग-आहृत-वधू-गणम् ।

अन्योन्य-लुण्ठन-व्यग्र-लोक-लग्न-महाभयम् ॥3॥

The streets flowed with crowds of wagons,

bearing housewares and furniture;

and there were wives wailing with pain,

as they ran down the war-torn roads:—

they were fleeing, crying for help!

Women were raped on the roadways,

cringing in terror,

fearful of being robbed by their own neighbors.

 

पर-राष्ट्र-जन-अनीक-ताण्डवोल्लासम् आरवम् ।

निरधिष्ठित-मातङ्ग-हय-वीर-पतज्-जनम् ॥4॥

There was much noise as soldiers of the enemy danced their uproar—

and out-of-control elephants and horse-warriors trampled people.

 

कपाट-पाटनोड्डीन-कोशान्त-रव-घर्घरम् ।

लुण्ठिता-संख्य-कौशेय-प्रावृत-अभिभट-उद्भटम् ॥5॥

The doorways of the Treasury cracked with a snap,

revealing its precious treasure of silk and gold.

They stole it all while the guards watched.

 

गृह-अपहृत-भोज्य-अन्न-भोजन-उन्मुख-पामरम् ।

स-हेम-हार-वीर-ओघ-पाद-आहत-रुदच्-छिशु ॥6॥

Their guts uprooted,

there they lie,

the royal women:—

daggered, dead,

they rest in the Inner City,

freed from the dog-eating rabble.

 

गृह-अपहृत-भोज्य-अन्न-भोजन-उन्मुख-पामरम्

-हेम-हार-वीर-ओघ-पाद-आहत-रुदच्-छिशु ॥7॥

The houses were looted of their provisions by that human trash,

gaping at such a feast,

those gangs of mighty warriors stealing gold.

They would kick babies with their feet!

 

अपूर्व-तरुण-आक्रान्त-केश-अन्तःपुरिक-अङ्गनम् ।

चोर-हस्त-च्युतान्_अर्घ्य-रत्न-दन्तुर-मार्गगम् ॥8॥

There were young girls dragged by the hair—

the anta:pura girls.

Their pearls were scattered by the hands of thieves,

their jewels overflowed the road.

 

हय.इभ-रथ-संघट्ट=व्यग्र.सामन्त-मण्डलम् ।

अभिषेक-उद्यम_आदेश-पर-मन्त्रि-पुरःसरम् ॥9॥

And now the horses, elephants, and chariots in a throng came by

preceded by the Ministers,

obedient to the new Prince.

 

राज-धानी-विनिर्माण-सारम्भ-स्थ-पति-ईश्वरम् ।

कृत-वातायन-श्वभ्र-निपतद्-राज-वल्लभम् ॥10॥

The Royal Engineer began building a Palace,

with ways for the wind,

with windows like elephants' eyes,

where the king's favorites could watch.

 

जय-शब्द-शत-उद्घोष-सिन्धु-राजन्य-निर्भरम् ।

असंख्य-निज-राज-ओघ-धृत-सिन्धु-कृत-अस्थितिः ॥11॥

There were cries of Victory from the crowds

as _sindhu issued his first Royal Proclamations

and neighboring kings whirled in a flood as tributaries of _sindhu.

 

ग्राम-अन्तर-समाक्रान्त-विद्रवद्-राज-वल्लभम् ।

मण्डल-अन्तर-संजात-नगर-ग्राम-लुण्ठनम् ॥12॥

अनन्त-चोर-मोष-अर्थ-रुद्ध-मार्ग-गम-अगमम् ।

महानुभाव-वैधुर्य-सनीहार-दिन-आतपम् ॥13॥

मृत-बन्धु-जन-आक्रन्दैर् मृत-तूर्य-रवैर् अपि ।

हय-इभ-रथ-शब्दैश् च पिण्ड-ग्राह्य-घन-ध्वनि ॥14॥

Overcome,

the nobility ran for their lives;

and everywhere about the realm

there was looting of the cities and villages.

An endless flow of thieves plundered and plied their trade on the highway.

 

The loss of _viduu.ratha was like a fog at noon darkening the sun.

and people wailed for their dead families,

and the drums mourned the dead,

while the noise of elephants and horses was thick enough to feel.

 

"सिन्धु-देवो जयत्य् एक-च्-छत्र-भू-मण्डल-अधिपः" ।

इत्य् अनन्तरम् आरेभे भेर्यः प्रतिपुरं तदा ॥15॥

राज-धानीं विवेश -अथ सिन्धुर् उद्धुर-कन्धरः ।

प्रजाः स्रष्टुं युगस्य -अन्ते मनुर् जगद् इव -अपरः ॥16॥

"The Divine sindhu has won!

the whole world rests under his one umbrella!"

and then the pounding kettledrums throughout the city

announced sindhu.

His head held high,

he entered the Palace, as.if he came to create a new Age.

 

प्रवृत्ता दश-दिग्भ्यो_ऽथ प्रवेष्टुं सैन्धवं परम् ।

कराः करि-हय-आकारै रत्न-पुरा इव अम्बुधिम् ॥17॥

And now there came,

from everywhere,

elephants and horse-drawn wagons,

and they were full of jewels as the sea is said to be,

bearing their tribute to raajaa sindhu.

 

निबन्धनानि चिह्नानि शासनानि दिशं प्रति ।

क्षनान् निवेशयाम्-आसुर् मण्डलं प्रति मन्त्रिणः ॥18॥

And royal regulations,

seals,

appointments,

edicts

everywhere at once went.forth,

appointing his ministers over his new realm.

 

उदभूत्_अचिरेण_एव देशे देशे पुरे पुरे ।

जीविते मरणे माने नियमः_अयम्_अतः यथा ॥19॥

Soon it became the same,

from place to place,

from town to town,

in life,

in death;

in manners:

the rule was

"Do only what I tell you to."

 

अथ शेमुर्_निमेषेण देश-उपप्लव-विभ्रमाः ।

प्रशान्त.उत्पात-पवनाः पदार्थ-आवृत्तयः यथा ॥20॥

And so there soon came to an end

the troubles and confusions of the country:

the winds of calamity died-down and turned away.

 

सौम्यतामाजगामाशु देशो दशदिगन्वितः ।

क्षीरोदः क्षुभितावर्तो द्रागिवुद्धृतमन्दरः ॥21॥

It soon settled in gentleness,

that land,

in all ten directions—

like the Milk Sea,

after its whirl

when it was churned by _mandara.

 

ववुर्_अलक-चयान्_विलोलयन्तो

मुख-कमल-अलि-कुलानि सैन्धवीनाम् ।

जल-लव-वलन-आकुलाः समीरा

अशिव-गुणान्_इव सर्वतः क्षणेन ॥22॥

And there blew a gentle breeze,

a fluttering of curls,

or bees browsing about sindhu's girls' faces;

it carried their aroma like a drifting cloud

that overcame the evil smells that befouled the place.

**sv.1 VASISTHA continued: Soon after the king Viduratha fell, there was utter post-war confusion and chaos in the city.

**vlm.1 VASISHTHA said:—The loud cry that the king was killed in battle by the rival monarch, struck the people with awe, and filled the realm with dismay.

**vlm.4. The joyous shouts of the soldiers in the enemy's camp, resounded with the roarings of loose elephants and neighings of horses, trampling down the men to death on their way.

**AS. No breaking down doors, pATana here simply means opening up! AB gives the meaning as the cracking sound of the destruction of the treasury flying up from open doors. Thus, the destruction inside was heard as soon as the doors opened.}

**vlm.5. The doors of the royal treasury were broken open by the brave brigands, the valves flew off and the vaults re-echoed to the strokes. The warders were overpowered by numbers, and countless treasures were plundered and carried away.

**VA. Surrounded by agitated leaders, crowded chariots, horses and elephants, attendant minister of sindhu declared his ascention and annointing.

**AS. The first line describes various officers (sAmanta) busy in getting horses, elephants and chariots. The second line describes that they were preceded by ministers following the orders for anointing of sindhu. mantri-puraHsaram means ones for whom the ministers (mantriNaH) were ahead. This is describing the attempt to fulfill the orders of the new king.

**AS. The word is Adezapara – dedicated to the command. Thus the ministers following the command to prepare for the new anointing were moving about. puraHsara is often used as a suffix to indicate leading figures in a situation.

**vlm.9. The chiefs assembled with ardour with their troops of horses, elephants and war-chariots, and announced the installation of sindhu by his minister.

 

And now the horses, elephants,

and chariots in a throng came by

preceded by the Ministers,

obedient to the new Prince. -9-

**vlm.10. Chief engineers were employed in making the decorations of the city and its halls, and the balconies were filled by the royal party attending at the inauguration.

***VA - master started decoration??? or building??? of royal palace, king’s favorites were arriving by created passages???

**AS. sthapati is a civil engineer, a builder. The engineers were busy managing projects of rebuilding the capital. The kings favorite (queens) were entering the newly created viewing windows (to see the city). Thus, sindhu was taking over everything.

**AS.Indeed, AB points this out. The word is sthapati is a single samAsa and this means an architect or master builder, carpenter etc. This is a title still used in India for people who design and build temples. The best are versed in the ancient vAstuzAstra and continue some traditional practices.

jaya-zabda-zata-udghoSa-sindhu-rAjanya-nirbharam - Victory-cries-hundreds-proclamation-sindhu-royal-abounding —

** VA - cries of victory by hundreds, multiple proclamations of sindhu’s royality,

countless neighbouring kings flooded to support sindhu desiring of his order.

**AS. I agree.

**vlm.11. It was then that the coronation of sindhu's son, took place amidst the loud acclamations of victory; and titles and dignities, were conferred upon the noblemen on the victor's side.

**sv.11 The king of sindhu announced that his son would be the new ruler. There was great rejoicing among his subjects and his ministers quickly got ready for the coronation.

piNDa-grAhya-ghana-dhvani – solid-graspable-thick-sound - with sounds thick enough to grasp – or sounds like funeral offerings???

 

***VA - Cries of people, relatives of the dead, cries of dying??? noise of horses, elephants and chariots were making noise thick enough to grasp what is mRta-tUrya-rava in the context??

**AS. I think these are sounds of tUrya - trumpet lamenting the dead - like funeral music. VLM describes them as bitter cries of the dying, but I don't see how mRta can mean dying.

**AB.  … piNDavat-kare grahItuM zakyA aity autprekSikam | ghanA dhvanayo yatra ||

**AS. AB says sound thick enough to grasp and I agree.

 

**vlm.14. The loud lamentations of the friends of the dead, and the bitter cries of the dying, mixed with the clamour raised by the driving cars, elephants and horses, thickened in the air as solid body of sound (pindagráhya).

sindhu-devo jayaty – "Divine sindhu is victorious —

eka-c-chatra-bhU-maNDala-adhipaH – the whole world rests under his umbrella!" —

ity anantaram Arebhe – so constantly began —

bheryaH pratipuraM tadA – the kettledrums then throughout the city.

 

**vlm.15. Loud trumpets proclaimed the victory of sindhu in every city, and announced his sole sovereignty all over the earth.

**AB.  iti udghoSayan bheryaH | cchAndasaH sub-vyatyayaH | vAdayitum Arebhe jana i.z. ||  

 

"The Divine sindhu has won!

the whole world rests under his one

umbrella!" — and then the pounding

viveza atha sindhur – Entered then sindhu, —

uddhura-kandharaH – high-necked — haughty???, —

rAjadhAnIM – the palace —

prajAH sraSTuM – as to create the people —

yugasya ante manur – in the Yuga —

jagad iva aparaH – the world before.

 

**AS. Yes, with his head held high; so haughty or proud would be good!

**vlm.16. The high-shouldered sindhu entered the capital as a second Manu (Noah), for re-peopling it after the all-devastating flood of war was over.

**AB.  atha putrasya rAjyÂbhiSekÂnantaram | sindhuH sva-rAja-dhAnIM viveza || 

***VA - Then proud sindhu entered the palace (palace which was build in #10?)

like Manu in another world at the end of yuga to create new peoples.

**AS. rAjadhAnI does not mean palace, but the capital - the city. uddhara-kandharaH is  translated as proud, which is appropriate but not literal enough. I would suggest hands raised in victory - like the two finger sign of Churchill!

**jd. When Churchill first made the "V" sign, he held his hand with his palm facing inward. He did not realize that this sign, with a slight upward jerk, was a working-class gesture meaning "Fuck you!" (similar to "giving the middle finger"). Subsequently he made the gesture with the palm facing-out. • The capital and the royal palace are the same thing in a monarchy, just as the ruler and his country are the same thing: Antony is Rome, and Cleopatra is Egypt.

रत्न-पुराः इव अम्बुधिम्  –  as full of jewels as the sea. – The sea is thought to be full of jewels. Cf. Shakespeare, "Full fathom five my father lies;... those are pearls that were his eyes."  -17- 

 

**vlm.17. Then the tribute of the country poured into the city of sindhu from all sides; and these loaded on horses and elephants, resembled the rich cargoes borne by ships to the sea.

 

And now there came, from everywhere,

elephants and horse-drawn wagons,

and they were full of jewels as the sea is said to be,

bearing their tribute to Râjâ sindhu.

**VA - soon it become in every direction and city, in living, in death, in opinions - strict restraining???

**AS.  I think he is cleverly using the word niyama twice! Soon order arose (nityamaH udabhUt) in different regions, different cities, in life and death and honor (of citizens),  just as it happens (yathA ayam niyamaH). VLM seems to see a "god yama ", I don't see where from. he must have omiteed the avagraha and hence made it into "yamataH yathA" meaning as.if it came from Yama himself. But the avagrah turns into ayam.

**vlm.19. His iron-rod was felt in all districts and cities like the inexorable rod of Yama, and it overawed the living with fear of instant death.

**vlm.20. All insurrections and tumults in the realm, soon subsided to rest under his reign; as the flying dust of the earth and the falling leaves of trees, fall to the ground upon subsidence of a tempest.

**sv.20 Immediately the new administration proclaimed martial law in the new state, which restored peace and order to it.

**AS. AB gives a vivid picture. When the wind dies down (pavale zAnte) the things

(like grass, leaves, dust etc.) whirling because of it, settle down.

**vlm.21. The whole country on all sides was pacified to rest, like the perturbed sea of milk after it had been churned by the Mandara mountain.

 

It soon settled in gentleness,

that land, in all ten directions—

like the Milk Sea, after its whirl

**vlm.22. Then there blew the gentle breeze of Malaya, unfurling the locks of the lotus-faced damsels of sindhu's realm, and wafting the liquid fragrance of their bodies around, and driving away the unwholesome air (of the carnage).

**AS. AB takes great interest in the poetic image. The winds caused the curls of hair of the beauties in the sindhu region to flutter away their lotus faces, like bees fluttering about a flower; Intoxicated by sipping drops of moisture from their (of the beauties) faces; The last analogy, however, seems incongruous – like bad qualities, smells.

The AB commentary reuses the word vilolayantaH changing it to viloDayantaH (by using the DalayorabhedaH principle!) and says that the wind is driving away the bad smells  (angry feelings). In short even AB is clutching for something! I can see the adjective azivaguNAn as matching only the alakacayAn and would use it as an adjective of the curls. Perhaps, it only refers to the black color to match the aziva guNa.

 

And there blew a gentle breeze,

a fluttering of curls,

or bees browsing about sindhu's girls' faces;

it carried their aroma like a drifting cloud

that overcame the evil smells that befouled the place.
