अस्ति कज्जल-पङ्क-अद्रेर् इव -उग्रा शाल-भञ्जिका हिमाद्रेर् उत्तरे पार्श्वे कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी ॥२॥

looks like a muddy mountain cloud

an Ogress

as fierce as any temple demon

विषूचिका-अभिधाना नाम्ना -अप्य् -अन्याय-बाधिका

viSUcikA-abhidhAnA ca nAmnA_apy_anyAya-bAdhikA |

विन्ध्या-अटवी- इव देहेन शुष्का कार्श्यम् उपागता ॥३॥

vindhyA-aTavI- iva dehena zuSkA kArzyam upAgatA ||3

she has another name also

viShUcikA the Plague

and

she is terribly afflicted,

her body stooped,

—like *vindhya making a bow—

for

she is all dry skin and skinny knobs

.

* #vindhya - a low range of hills separating Hindustan proper from the Dekhan • in  the personified `vindhya, jealous of `himAlaya, demanded that the sun should revolve round him in the same way as about meru, which the sun declined to do `vindhya then began to elevate himself that he might bar the progress of both sun and moon • the Gods were alarmed, and asked the aid of the sage `agastya, who approached `vindhya and requested that by bending down he would afford him an easy passage to the South country, begging at the same time that he would retain a low position till his return this he promised to do, but agastya never returned, and the vindhya range consequently never attained the elevation of the hima.Alaya.

 

महाबल-अग्नि-नयना रोदोरन्ध्र-अर्ध-पूरणी

नील-अम्बर-धरा कृष्णा देह-बद्धा -इव यामिनी ॥४॥

स्थिर-विद्युल्-लता-नेत्रा तमाल-तरु-जानुका वैदूर्य-शूर्प-अग्र-नखी भस्म-नीहार-हासिनी ॥६॥

sthira-vidyul-latA-netrA tamAla-taru-jAnukA | vaidUrya-zUrpa-agra-nakhI bhasma-nIhAra-hAsinI ||6||

निर्मांस-नर-देह-ओघ-पुष्प-स्रग्-धाम-भूषिता सर्व.अङ्ग-उदात्त-संप्रोत-शव-माला-विराजिता ॥७॥

nirmAMsa-nara-deha-ogha-puSpa-srag-dhAma-bhUSitA | sarva.aGga-udAtta-saMprota-zava-mAlA-virAjitA ||7

the foggy dew gives her a gown,

she wears a cloud about her hair;

her bright breasts

dangle like mangoes

as she towers over the darkness,

with eyes fiery as lightning bolts,

and knees like a tamAla tree,

and five-inch fingernails

has

a shrieking laugh like a snowsquall

.

her

floral bouquet

is a chain of meatless human bodies strung together,

a garland of glistening skeletons

decking her limbs

.

~vlm..68.5. A white mantle formed the covering of her head, like the fragment of a cloud; and the long erect hairs of her head, stood like a sable cloud on her crest.

~vlm.6. Her eyes flashed as lightnings, and her sharp hooked nails glistened as sapphires; her legs were as long as tamála trees, and her loud laughter was as a burst of frost. *The black Rákhasas were believed to have been a colony of African Negros in southern India and Ceylon. The Rakhs is Bax, and Sycorax of Shakespere.

~vlm..68.7. A string of dried bones decorated her body, like a wreath of flowers; and the relics of dead bodies, adorned every part of her body.

~VA.5 hidden in the covering of mist, cloud as here head-dress, shining moon is like a hanging mango fruit, long dark erect hairs????

~AS.  the second line says: Smiling with a face like a low lying cloud, with hair like ever present darkness - thus with completely dark hair. I am interpreting nityotthatimira as one word meaning "always risen darkness". • In the first line, the second part should be with a head cover of thick clouds. This could mean that she was so tall that her head was in the clouds.

 

वेताल-आवेश-विचलत्-काल-कङ्काल-कुण्डला अर्क-आदान-उत्क-दीर्घ-अग्र-भीम-उग्र-भुज-मण्डला ॥८॥

तस्या विपुल-कायत्वाद् दुर्लभत्वान् निज-अन्धस: अतृप्तो ऽर्णव-लेखाया इव -अभूज् जाठरो ऽनल: ॥९॥

tasyA vipula-kAyatvAd durlabhatvAn nija-andhasa: | atRpto 'rNava-lekhAyA iva_abhUj jATharo 'nala: ||9

her body is so big that she finds it a chore to get her food

her belly's always burning like the *vADava,

the submarine fire that eats the sea

~vlm.9. Her huge body being in want of its necessary aliment, caused her culinary fire to blaze like the submarine flame, which the waters of the deep are unable to quench.

 

*Ott. #vADava, #vADaba, #baDavA, #baDabA वाडवः [वडवाया अपत्यं वडवानां समूहो वा अण्] -adj.- coming from a mare (as milk) • –m.- a stallion, stud-horse •• submarine fire •• a kind of coitus •• the nymph #azvinI (who, in the form of a mare as wife of #vivasvat or the Sun, became the mother of the two #azvin.s • cf #azvinI) • a partic. constellation represented by a horse's head. •-• Oceanographers speak-of two sorts of luminescence in seawater: algae that blink their light (thought to be a means of frightening predators) • and gathered bacteria that glow constantly, for many days. Phenomena of the latter sort are well-known in the Indian Ocean near Somalia. Perhaps this is the origin of this metaphor, which appears frequently in yv/FM. - Somehow the doctors take the word to mean"coming from a mare (as milk)". suSr.

 

 

कदाचन सा तृप्तिम् उपयाता महोदरी वडव-अनल.जिह्वा -इव चिन्तयाम्-आस -एकदा ॥१०॥

but then one day she had this thought

जंबू-द्वीप-गतान् सर्वान् निगिरामि जनान् यदि अनारतम् अनुश्वासम् जल-राशिम् इव -अर्णव: ॥११॥

jaMbU-dvIpa-gatAn sarvAn nigirAmi janAn yadi | anAratam anuzvAsam jala-rAzim iva_arNava: ||11

||

if

I eat all the people who come here to WoodApple.Land

I'll be like undersea fire feeding.upon the ocean-waves

.

 

मेघेन मृग-तृष्णेव तन् मे क्षुद् उपशाम्यति अविरुद्धैव सा युक्तिर् यया -अपदि हि जीव्यते ॥१२॥

meghena mRga-tRSNeva tan me kSud upazAmyati | aviruddhaiva sA yuktir yayA_apadi hi jIvyate ||12

||

as

a rain-cloud ends a mirage,

so too

my hunger would be filled

.

such a recourse would be correct

:

I'd live unpleasantly,

but

I'd live

!

 

मन्त्रौषध-तपोदान-देव-पूजादि-रक्षितम् समम् एव जनम् सर्वम् निर्बाधम् : प्रबाधते ॥१३॥

mantrauSadha-tapodAna-deva-pUjAdi-rakSitam | samam eva janam sarvam nirbAdham ka: prabAdhate ||13

but some of these travelers are protected

by mantra.s

and herbs

and fierce tapas.Austerities before their Gods

who could

(and how would she)

trouble an untroubled people

?

~sv.3.68.13 However, since the people of Jambudvipa are pious, charitable, devoted to god, and endowed with a knowledge of herbs, it is inappropriate to harass these peace-loving people.

~vlm..68.13. All men are well guarded by means of their mantras, medicines, austerities, devotions and charities, from all evils of the world; whence it is impossible for any body to destroy the indestructible devotee.

 

तप: करोमि परमम् अखिन्नेनैव चेतसा तपसैव महोग्रेण यद् दुरापम् तदाप्यते ॥१४॥

tapa: karomi paramam akhinnenaiva cetasA | tapasaiva mahogreNa yad durApam tadApyate ||14

I

will do some  practice of extreme Austerity as a firm commitment,

for

that's what gets what is, without it, hard.to.get

.

 

 

vasiSTha said—

 

इति संचिन्त्य सा सर्व-जन्तु-जात-जिघांसया । तपोर्थम् अथ सस्मार पर्वतम् भूत-दुर्गमम् ॥१५॥

iti saMcintya sA sarva-jantu-jAta-jighAMsayA | taportham atha sasmAra parvatam bhUta-durgamam ||15

so she mused

&

she grew an appetite that craved the blood

of everyone

then

she had a memory

:

a mountain,

remote from everyone,

it was a place where she could practice tapas,

seeking Food*

as the reward for her austerities

*jd. `rAkShasa.Ogres are devourers of all flesh; they'll eat anything, even their own.

 

 


 

आरुरोह तच् छृङ्गम् स्थिर-विद्युद्-विलोचना हस्तपादआदिमद्देहा श्यामला इव अभ्र-मण्डली ॥१६॥

Aruroha ca tac chRGgam sthira-vidyud-vilocanA | hastapAdaAdimaddehA zyAmalA iva abhra-maNDalI ||16||

तत्र गत्वा -अथ सा स्नात्वा तप: कर्तुम् कृत-स्थिति: । अतिष्ठद् एक-पादेन चन्द्र-अर्क-अस्पन्द-लोचना ॥१७॥

tatra gatvA_atha sA snAtvA tapa: kartum kRta-sthiti: | atiSThad eka-pAdena candra-arka-aspanda-locanA ||17

climbed the mountain she remembered,

she

with her unblinking flashing eyes,

and a body

from hands to feet black  as a clustered thundercloud

.and having got there, having made holy ablutions, taking a place to stand,

she

made

tapas

she

stood

balanced

on

one

foot,

and her eyes shone brightly like a Sun and FullMoon

.

 

 

क्रमेण दिवसा: पक्षस् तस्या मासर्तवो ययु: । शीतातपेषु लीनाया: कृताया: इव शैलत: ॥१८॥

krameNa divasA: pakSas tasyA mAsartavo yayu: | zItAtapeSu lInAyA: kRtAyA: iva zailata: ||18

in the course

days

and nights

and fortnights

and months passing.by

—in parade—

that mountainous body

was overwhelmed

with winter cold

summer heat

सा बभूव- अभ्र-मालाया: समासम् स्तम्भित-आकृति: कृष्ण-ऊर्ध्वग-ऊर्ध्व-केशी खम् आहर्तुम् इव- उद्गता ॥१९॥

a chain of clouds hung round her neck

and she seemed to be reaching for the sky

I couldn't understand whether she is a needle in the story, or a disease or both? Why did she decided to become a needle when she only wished to eat everybody? Being only a disease would have sufficient...

*vlm.p.3 She was also known as Vishuchika or Choleric Pain, by which she was ever afflicted, and which had reduced her frame like that of Vindhya Hill which was pushed down (by the curse of Agastya).

#vindhya * a low range of hills separating Hindustan proper from the Dekhan • the personified Vindhya, jealous of Himâlaya, demanded that the sun should revolve round him in the same way as about Meru, which the sun declined to do • Vindhya then began to elevate himself that he might bar the progress of both sun and moon: the Gods were alarmed, and asked the aid of the sage Agastya, who approached Vindhya and requested that by bending down he would afford him an easy passage to the South country, begging at the same time that he would retain a low position till his return * this he promised to do, but Agastya never returned, and the Vindhya range consequently never attained the elevation of the Himâlaya. +

.AS_ the second line says: Smiling with a face like a low lying cloud, with hair like ever present darkness * thus with completely dark hair_I am interpreting nityotthatimira as one word meaning "always risen darkness"_• In the first line, the second part should be with a head cover of thick clouds_This could mean that she was so tall that her head was in the clouds.

*vlm.p. As clouds cool burning sands by their rain, so will I allay the burning fire of my hunger there. It is settled as the best plan to support my life at this critical moment."

and fierce austerities before their Gods

*vlm.p.13. "All men are well guarded by their mantras, medicines, austerities, devotions and charities from all evils of the world. Therefore it is impossible for anybody to destroy the indestructible devotee.

*sv.3.68.13 However, since the people of Jambudvipa are pious, charitable, devoted to god, and endowed with a knowledge of herbs, it is inappropriate to harass these peace*loving people_
