Hi all,

These are some guidelines from Geoffrey on your last class.; e asked me to let you know that he will actually talk more about the
"feedback/critique" before the class starts so you ask questions and feel clear on that.

Everybody Teaches
February 13, 2010
Geoffrey Roniger

There is one primary rule when it comes to teaching:

Teach what you know

This statement always begs the question, how do you know what you know unless you try to teach? Joan Didion once said of the writing process, “How do I know what I think unless I write?” So maybe we could say that the second rule of teaching is that through trying to communicate what you think you know to others, you will quickly become aware of what you don’t know. This is how the teaching process becomes maximally educational for the teacher. This is why teaching is best viewed as another form of practice.

In this final Module of The Yoga Loft’s Teacher Training Program, I hope to alleviate any performance anxiety on your part by reminding you that teaching is not a performance. We will practice teaching three yoga poses to our peers so that we can elucidate our understanding of the art of asana and get clearer on what we think is important to share.

The format will be as follows:

·    I will lead an hour-long class designed to get you in touch with your native intelligence so that you will have less interference from your micromanaging mind.

·    Each of you will have 15 minutes to teach three poses of your choice, after which we will have 5-10 minutes of discussion and supportive feedback.

Things to keep in mind:

·    Consider how you want to sequence your three poses (How are the poses related? How would you like people to feel when they’re done?)

·    Keep it simple

·    Use your own voice, not a cryptic “yoga” voice

·    Remember that you are not being graded

·    Remember how many times you practiced triangle pose before you felt like you knew what you were doing

·    Breathe
