Managing Director, Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, UC BerkeleyThe Managing Director oversees administration for the institute, including staff, budget and finances, and facilities, and is responsible for the day-to-day management of core programs within the institute, including:
- a curriculum of 6-8 design-focused courses offered fall, spring and summer, for which the institute recruits lecturers and faculty;
- a makerspace staffed by professional and student workers which is accessed by 1200+ students each semester;
- mentorship and co-curricular programming for students, such as the Innovation Catalyst program;
- supporting 15+ design and innovation courses from campus departments and 25+ clubs and decals each semester by offering access to high quality teaching, meeting and event space;
- public events and speaker series;
- the Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation, an undergraduate certificate offered in partnership with the Haas School of Business, College of Letters & Science, and College of Environmental Design;
- support for a newly launched professional Master of Design degree, offered in partnership with the College of Environmental Design and housed within the Jacobs Institute;
- and partnerships with companies and international universities.
This position manages both staff working on curricular and public programs, as well as the most active Makerspace on Berkeley’s campus. In addition, the Managing Director provides essential support to the institute’s faculty leadership, and contributes to the development and implementation of the vision for the institute.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with experience managing a cross-functional team, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with administrative roles in higher education is a plus, as is familiarity with design and fabrication practices.
