The Heising-Simons Foundation's Finance team seeks a Senior Accountant, with 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, to manage day-to-day financial operations and support a variety of complex accounting activities. This role works closely with the Director of Finance and cross-functional teams to ensure efficient accounting processes as well as the accuracy and integrity of financial data in accordance with GAPP and non-profit accounting principles. Primary responsibilities will include:
  • Month-End Close & General Ledger: Perform and oversee monthly closing activities, including journal entries, reconciliations (bank, payroll, credit cards), balance sheet analysis, and maintenance of general ledger accounts.
  • Payroll & Benefits Administration: Manage semi-monthly payroll across multiple states, ensuring compliance with tax and labor regulations; oversee benefits deductions, 401(k)/457(b) reporting, and coordinate with HR on compensation and benefits changes.
  • Accounts Payable & Vendor Management: Process vendor invoices and employee reimbursements, maintain vendor records, ensure timely payments, and conduct verification calls for grantees.
  • Year-End & Audit Support: Prepare 1099s, assist with audits, and compile information for tax filings, property taxes, and compliance reports.
  • Systems, Reporting & Organizational Support: Maintain financial systems, provide user training, improve accounting processes, prepare ad hoc reports, and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive workplace culture.
The successful candidate must live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, the Foundation has a flexible hybrid approach to work, allowing staff to work from home or the office while maintaining a regular in-person cadence of three consecutive days per month for community building, learning, collaboration, and direction setting. In addition, the Finance team meets in person at least quarterly and as needed to fulfill departmental objectives.  

The target starting salary for this position is $110,000 to $132,000 per year, depending on experience.
