Assistant Commissioner of Performance

The Assistant Commissioner of Performance manages four distinct teams ― Research and Analysis, Data Use and Governance, Accountability, and the Performance Management Division ― that are critical in advancing outcomes for students across the state of Tennessee. The Assistant Commissioner of Performance will serve a critical role in ensuring effective research and analysis and data use and governance, particularly as Tennessee looks to implement interventions to mitigate the effects of learning loss for students. The Assistant Commissioner will also oversee the state report card process and the continuous improvement of TDOE services through project and process codification, implementation, progress monitoring, and evaluation. This work requires close collaboration with the Commissioner, the cabinet, the executive leadership team, and many other internal and external stakeholders. The compensation range for this role is between $120,000-$145,000 and comes complete with state benefits. This role is located in Nashville, TN.

Assistant Commissioner of Communications

The Assistant Commissioner of Communications leads the communications team and serves as the primary liaison from the communications team to the commissioner and the commissioner’s office. The Assistant Commissioner will work to ensure that agency communications and campaigns are implemented with quality, accuracy, and fidelity. The Assistant Commissioner also ensures that the actions and activities of the communications team align robustly with the department’s strategic plan and that both internal and external stakeholders are supported in their partnerships and implementations. This work requires navigating and managing state government contexts — both within the Tennessee Department of Education and with other aligned state agencies, governmental bodies and entities, and local education agencies — and the programmatic goals of the department in order to continuously improve service delivery while following and bolstering internal controls. The Assistant Commissioner must be a dynamic leader who is responsive to day-to-day issues while building office culture and alignment to the strategic vision in order to meet long-term goals that advance educational outcomes for students in Tennessee. The ideal candidate is solutions-oriented, collaborative, strategic, and organized. The compensation range for this role is between $120,000-$145,000 and comes complete with state benefits. This role is located in Nashville, TN.

Chief Operating Officer

Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) leads three divisions — Finance, Information Technology, and District Operations — which involves managing day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives, establishing and maintaining coherence and collaboration, and ensuring that divisional supports meet stakeholder needs, meet performance benchmarks, and align to strategic outcomes. The COO also ensures that operations of these three divisions align robustly with the department’s strategic plan and that both internal and external stakeholders are supported in their partnerships and implementations. This work requires navigating and managing state government contexts — both within the Tennessee Department of Education and with other aligned state agencies, governmental bodies and entities, and local education agencies — and the programmatic goals of the department in order to continuously improve service delivery while following and bolstering internal controls.
