Mission:
Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Project (ANV) elevates life in Oakland and beyond by challenging oppressive dynamics and environments through urban farming. Founded and led primarily by Black Women and people of color from the surrounding neighborhood and larger community, ANV creates a safe and creative space for children, youth, and families in East Oakland, CA. ANV engages and strengthens young people's understanding of nutrition, food production, and healthy living, as well as strengthens their ties to the outdoors and natural environment.

Position:
As a partner to the Executive Director (ED) and other board members, the Board Chair will provide leadership to Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project as it continues to grow after 10 years of service to youth in East Oakland and beyond. The Board Chair will support and sustain the work of ANV, and provide governance leadership and strategic fundraising support. Specific responsibilities include:
Leadership, Governance, and Oversight
Being a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements ANV’s strategic plan
Developing and managing relationships and communicating with: funders, partners, and other stakeholders
As a board member, approving ANV’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by ANV for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
Coordinating an annual performance evaluation of the ED
Assisting the ED and Nominating Committee in recruiting board members
Periodically consulting with board members on their roles and helping them assess their performance
Planning, presiding over, and facilitating board and committee meetings; partnering with the ED to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
Acting as an ambassador for the organization
Ensuring ANV’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities ANV serves
Ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of the board’s roles and processes.
Partnering with the Executive Director to shape bimonthly meeting agendas and organization priorities.
Partnering with the Executive Director in performing annual evaluations of the organization in achieving its mission.
Coordinating the planning of the board’s activities for the year and ensures that an ongoing planning process exists
Conducting formal evaluation of the performance of the Executive Director regularly and informally evaluating the effectiveness of the Board members.
Maintaining effective relationships with board members, staff and stakeholders.
Making time for their volunteer service a true priority.
Fundraising
In collaboration with the ED, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering ANV’s overall financial health
Personally treating ANV as a top philanthropic priority reflected in an annual financial gift
Ensuring that 100 percent of ANV’s board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity
Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts
Board Terms
ANV’s Board Chair (and board members) will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held every other month starting in January. Committee and training/ professional development meetings will be held every other month starting in February.
Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the success of ANV’s beneficiaries and who has a track record of board leadership. The selected Board Chair will have achieved leadership stature in education, business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in education, business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member or board chair
Track record of building credibility in the funding community that has resulted in major gifts to a nonprofit
A commitment to and understanding of ANV’s beneficiaries and mission preferably based on experience
Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with natural affinity for public speaking
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of ANV’s beneficiaries
Served at least two years as member of a board
Visionary with a proven leadership, has the ability to see the big picture and have the courage to set direction to achieve the organization’s mission
Good strategic and facilitation skills, ability to influence and achieve consensus
Ability to communicate effectively
A trusted advisor relationship with ED and other board members
Service on ANV’s board of directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to board members’ duties.
