The South African NGO sector has no shortage of challenges. A
struggling global economy, changing donor priorities, and a general
lack of appreciation for the work of the sector are all factors
affecting the activities and sustainability of the sector. There are
100,000 nonprofit organizations in South Africa, and only a small
number have the information and communication technology they need to
operate efficiently. We are pleased to announce that David Barnard,
director of TechSoup Global partner NGO SANGONeT—an online technology
donation portal--will run the Sahara desert October 2–8 to raise funds
that support four South African NGOs. Those includeEndangered Wildlife
Trust, Cancer Association of South Africa, Starfish Greathearts
Foundation for orphaned children and SCOREsports for community
development.
