Dear yMWIA executives,

Please read this letter from Ji Eun Joy Shim, who is a candidate of medical students division. You can see that she is very passionate about yMWIA.
My role is to find the people who can sacrifice and contribute to yMWIA  and get them involved in yMWIA. As our term is three years, I don't want to make the people wait for such a long time. And yMWIA is still in the state of growing and expanding, it should be flexible and have open-minded to all kinds of situation if we can be nurtured and developed from the effects or supports. And if you have any one who can give positive effects us, you can recommend us because other positions like resident divisions or fellow divisions can be considered.

To yMWIA Executive Committee Members,

Hello, my name is Ji Eun Joy Shim, and I am a medical student in my second year at Ewha Womans University, School of Medicine. I was the one who suggested to Dr. Shin that having a student representative might be useful for better organization of yMWIA, and personally expressed interest in the position.

Currently, both medical students and young female doctors are clumped together in one group under the name of yMWIA. With the 29th MWIA congress that took place in Seoul, Korea just last month, medical students began to make up a significant portion of yMWIA, which occurred mainly because medical students who volunteered for the event were given a chance to register for a membership to yMWIA. Other than just a simple fact that medical students who are yet to receive an MD degree are different from ones with a medical license, medical students tend to have different interests and concerns regarding the field of medicine than ones who are already working in the field. I also thought medical students were under-represented in the executive board, which only continues to pose problems for students to voice their concerns to the committee. Because of these reasons I stated above, I felt that there is a need for a student representative among yMWIA, to better represent the medical students' interest to the committee. By having a student representative, and maybe eventually expanding it further into a student division within yMWIA, I believe MWIA can expose and involve young soon-to-be doctors early on in their career with the organization, which will only positively affect MWIA in expansion of their membership.

If the position is to be confirmed, few of my future agenda as a student representative would be as follows:

▶Identify and compile a list of students in yMWIA, which can also be a possible source/pool of volunteers for future conference.

▶Having a student section or an article written from students' perspective included on the annual publication of yMWIA to address interests of wider range of readers.

▶Encourage medical students to join yMWIA and stay more involved, which I believe, would be easier with a student representative.

I believe position of a student representative would be a positive annexation to the executive committee of yMWIA, to not just better represent the current body of yMWIA, but also for the future of MWIA.

If the current executive committee members do not feel the need for a student representative, I will rest my case here.

Thank you very much for considering my suggestion!

Best Regards,

Ji Eun (Joy) Shim

Dear Sisters,
Good day to us all.
Trust we are all doing well in our careers and families, as the case may be.
Just a few questions as we deliberate on creating more executive positions;
Can the medical student, (whom i noticed is likely to be the 3rd member of the executive from Korea, if accepted), please include in her manifesto how she intends to spread yMWIA to;
1. Australia
2. Africa
3. North America
4. Europe
5. Other parts of Asia,
Just to concentrate on at least 5 continents out of 7, which is a very big task ahead of this exco for this triennium.
I am sure she wasn't referring to Korean medical students alone in her write up.
I want to know how much information she has gathered about other medical schools in the bid to pursue this ambition.
I will make my personal contributions and likely rest my case with the response I get on this.
I am sure you understand my interest in this from the perspective of Public Relations.
Thank you so much for taking time to read.
Regards

Dr Ime Okon
Director of Public Relations I,
yMWIA.

Dear fellow executive members,

At this time, I would like to show my support for Miss Ji Eun Joy Shim as our student representative. I have been fortunate to meet with Joy during the Congress and she has already been a big help to Dr. Shin and I in a few events within Korea related to yMWIA.  I commend her diligence and excellent work ethic. She has been delightful to work with.

I believe the medical students in the yMWIA are a special and separate group within the yMWIA. Because they are not yet official medical experts with a licence yet still medical women, these young ladies are in a different position compared to the other young doctor members of the yMWIA. And so, I think having a separate student representative on the executive committee is more than reasonable.

Although we already have a medical student on the executive committee, and may have more in the future, nevertheless, these ladies will have her own set of duties as the particular committee position she holds. And so, having a separate student representative will allow the workload of the committee members to be appropriately distributed when it comes to events related to medical students.

In addition, I dont see the student representatives position to be solely responsible for all things regarding students, for example, such as recruitment of medical student members from all over the world. I think that is a great task that the Public relations director(s) can and perhaps should work together with the student representative.

Now, since there is a student representative, it is understandable for a request for a resident/intern/trainee representative.  However, in my opinion, a resident is already a MD with a licence, and so I dont see the current need for a separate representation in a group that is already of young doctors. Yet, if there is a volunteer, like Joy, who would like to represent the younger doctors in training, I am more that happy to welcome her to executive committee.

And that is my two cents on this topic. I will be happy to hear from you for any comments.

sincerely,

Dr. Seung Yun Lee

yMWIA Secretary 2013-2016
