Subject: PhD position on sustainable soil stabilisation at University of Genoa (Italy)
Dear colleagues (apologies in advance for any cross posting),
Applications are welcome for a PhD position on the sustainable stabilisation of soils at University of Genoa (Italy). The title of the project is "Low-carbon Earth-based Materials for Building Applications (LEMBA)” and the main objective is to devise sustainable and bio-based soil stabilisation methods to replace conventional energy intensive alternatives (e.g. cement and/or lime stabilisation). The PhD candidate will work on both the experimental characterisation and modelling of the hydromechanical and hygrothermal behaviour of the stabilised soils. The PhD candidate will also spend a period of six months during the 2nd Year of the project at the company Envirosoil, based in the United Kingdom. The opportunity to apply a selected stabilisation method in the field is envisaged. The position is funded for 3 years commencing from January 2022 (starting date cannot be postponed). The successful applicant will work under the joint supervision of Dr Agostino Walter Bruno and Pr Domenico Gallipoli.
We are looking forward to receiving applications from highly-motivated and curious candidates with a First Class Master’s degree (or equivalent) in civil engineering with a specialisation in geomechanics or other relevant fields obtained before 31/10/2021. Applications should consist of a CV, transcript of marks and a research proposal of about 4-5 pages fitting the above topic. The proposal should include a short description of research interests, context of the proposed project, general overview and plan of research activities. It would also be useful to receive two reference letters or, alternatively, the email contacts of two referees.
Applications must be submitted at the following weblink (the application window will open around mid October and will stay open for only about ten days): http://dottorato.dicca.unige.it/eng/index.html
Given the short time available, prospective applicants are invited to start sending informally the application documentation as soon as possible to two supervisors (they will also have to apply formally at the above link once the call will be formally open).
The contact details of Dr Agostino Walter Bruno and Pr Domenico Gallipoli (please address your correspondence to both) are:

Kind regards,
Domenico Gallipoli
