Hi Anand,

I would be grateful if you could circulate the following details about a very exciting opportunity we have here at the University of Cambridge recruiting up to 12 Future Roads Fellows.

This is part of a new European COFUND grant, Future Roads,  on which we are recruiting 27 three-year post-doc fellows to work on roads! We already recruited 8 to our cohort 1 who will start in September. We have just issued the call for our cohort 2 to which we hope to recruit up to 12 follows. This then leaves ~7 fellows to recruit in cohort 3.

We are focusing on 5 themes: Digital Twins, Smart Materials, Data Science, Robotics and Automation and Sustainability. I lead the smart materials theme.

Further details on the whole initiative can be found on the following website as well as the specific call details:

The Future Roads Fellowships (FUTUREROADS) is a £5.9m programme supported by EU MSCA COFUND over 60 months. It offers 27 experienced researcher fellowships linked to the thematic areas; digital twins, data science, smart materials, automation and robotics, and sustainability, all in the context of the roads network.

A total of 27 FUTUREROADS fellowships are available for the most talented researchers from around the world. The aim is to recruit, train and support individual fellows over 36 months, who wish to contribute towards a future where advances in data and materials science enable the physical road infrastructure assets to be cognisant of their state, and able to communicate it to their digital ...

I attach the call for applicants (CfA) document. Under the Smart Materials theme, I have adveritsed  8 challenges as selected by sponsoring industry partners (Amey, Galliford Try, Keltbray, Versarien, Balfour Beatty, Telent, Ringway and TRL, National Highways and Costain):

  1. Nano-inspired roads: Role of nanotechnology in the delivery of future roads
  2. Maximising road life: smart materials and sensors to extend the life of existing assets
  3. Oil-free asphalt for future roads: sustainable materials for flexible road pavements
  4. Zero waste roads: capitalising on existing pavements and eliminating the mining of natural resources
  5. Carbon zero roads: decarbonisation of road materials
  6. Digitally enabled roads: enabling proactive asset management
  7. zero and positive impact roads: zero waste and environmentally responsible pavements
  8. Future-proof roads: Materials for durable and climate resilient pavements

These range across the whole spectrum of materials research from material development, synthesis and characterisation, laboratory experimentation and durability testing, Sensors and relevant digital technologies, modelling, big data and machine learning, waste reuse and minimisation, low carbon materials, Life cycle analysis and whole life costing, carbon calculations and environmental impact analyses, and project scale and city scale considerations and studies working directly with the industry sponsors.

I would be grateful if you are able to advertise the call widely. Anyone interested, please could you ask them to contact me directly and asap.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Abir
