Hello Classmates,
With the warmer weather waning, I find myself trying to get to as many remaining outdoor dance events the calendar can provide. This past week saw the first of the Will Nieves hosted 'Salsa by the Water' Wednesday evening offerings. I was not able to make
the September 4 kickoff, but will try to be there for the 11th. Starting next week, the location in Domino Park will be different from the fountain, where all prior events have taken place. Going forward, dancing will be in a newly constructed area called
Domino Square.
If my directions are correct, Domino Square, an acre of open space, is behind the beach volleyball court and a little south of the fountain. The address is supposed to be 320 Kent St., somewhere between South-3rd & South-4th Streets.
I did get a chance to pop by a
newer event hosted by DJ Jayboogie called 'Salsa after Work' happening on Thursdays 6p - 9p at 5210 Center Blvd, LIC, 11101. This is a free event and no tickets or registration are required. Unfortunately, I was only able to catch the last 20 min
of the festivities, but people were definitely having a good time. I did get a dance with a rather enthusiastic follower, right there at the end and am heartily encouraged to return. This place was not easy to find/get to. The closest subway stop may be
Vernon Ave/Jackson Blvd on the #7 line. Parking is terrible, but the view is fantastic, being directly across the river from 34
th St in Manhattan. The dance area is a modern open pier type structure, with a canopy like covering, offering good
ventilation. The surface is made of wooden planks, nicely leveled and well maintained, making for a comfortable dance surface. The music was accompanied by guiro and other miscellaneous instruments that revelers may bring.
Salsa after Work continues through September, but will be suspended on 9/12, according to the host due to a prior booking of the space. Dancing should return on 9/19.
Next week, Putnam Ave on Tuesday ( see prior email ) , Domino's on Wednesday, Time Out with Marlene on Thursday and Carlos Konig at the Central Park Bandshell
behind the fountain on Friday. Get it while it's hot!
