Hello Salsa Classmates,
Hope you are well and have been enjoying the many socials that have been a part of the summer dance scene here in NYC.
There are still a few sessions left on the calendar at Pier 76 and Washington Square Park in Manhattan and at Abolition Square and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. I expect that the Domino Park social in Williamsburg will close out the season in September, as it has in the past.
I recently became aware of another happening related to the salsa scene, put on by a group going by the name
Dance is Life. This event features predominantly Hustle (formally 'Latin Hustle') but will likely include other related dance styles. Their next social is scheduled for
Wed., Sept 4, from 5p - 7:30p at Manhattan Plaza West off of 9th Av betw W 31 & W 33 Sts. See the link for details. Dance for Life had apparently been putting on events throughout the summer for years, but I am only now discovering their existence.
For those unfamiliar with the history of hustle, born here in the "inner city" regions of NYC, don't go to strangers, check out
Maris Torres as she gives the story in brief.
This video shows a snippet of what it's like at the highest levels.
Ask around in class, as there are one or two "hustlers" in our group.
