Hello Classmates,
Well, as of this writing, the Summer of '24 has unofficially come to an end, but that doesn't necessarily mean that outdoor dancing has stopped. I was recently told that my old block in Bed -Stuy is having a "Salsa Night" on Tuesday, Sept 10 from 6p-8p. The
flyer is attached. The original plan may have been to just listen to the music, but if dancers show up, the band will be quite appreciative. Please see attached for more info. That's Putnam Ave, between Lewis and Stuyvesant Avenues, Bed-Stuy proper! Let
me know if you plan to go.
I did get to finally go to the outdoor social at Washington Square Park on Wednesdays. Garibaldi Circle is slightly east of the fountain, or if you are entering from W 4th St, facing the fountain, it is to your right. A raised stage or platform
where the DJ and accompanying equipment are to be found is tangential to the circle. The crowd is spread pretty evenly throughout, with a good concentration of attendees near the stage. Music is mostly salsa dura, which seemed fine with the majority of dancers,
who were working up quite a sweat as the music played. The heat was a factor the night I was there. Perhaps as the evenings get cooler, things will be a little more comfortable. The followers were (mostly) quite friendly, and once you got your bearings,
it was fairly easy to determine who really came to dance. There was one male dancer who was actually pointing out the followers who were and weren't likely to accept an invite to dance, and he was usually correct! Definitely a strong consideration for a
Wednesday night out dancing in Manhattan.
