James Rowley is a Software and Electrical Engineer at Marcus Engineering, and has been with the company since January 2017. His skills range from embedded firmware development to desktop software development, to designing, developing, testing, and manufacturing electronic systems, as well as reverse engineering of the same. At Marcus Engineering, he has led the development of products for both medical and commercial applications, and has also led software and hardware reverse engineering efforts. In his spare time, James enjoys working on personal electronics and software projects similar to the ones at Marcus Engineering; often as open-source submissions to engineering competitions.
Kyle Cerniglia is an Embedded Engineer, and has been with Marcus Engineering since 2018. Kyle holds a BSECE from The University of Arizona and has experience with embedded design, low power devices, and lightweight mechanical design. Outside of the office, Kyle enjoys gaming, airsoft, shooting, and hiking.
Marcus Engineering has been a great partner for Lasertel for many years. Patrick and his team offer an amazing breadth and depth of knowledge, which they always seem willing to share. I have had the privilege of working personally with Patrick on a number of development efforts of different sizes. His thoughtful approach to engineering and his attention to detail have made him an invaluable resources for me and my team as we work toward the best engineering solutions. With Marcus Engineering it feels more like a partnership, rather than merely a customer-supplier relationship, which makes all the difference.
Man oh man, microchip was an absolute blast! I feel like neo in the matrix being plugged in for the first time. (Can't say I quite know kung foo yet though). Some of the classes I took that were at a more intro level for me were awesome and filled in a lot of gaps in my learning and answered a LOT of questions. And the classes that were way over my head were great too because they gave me a perspective and a better awareness for how deep the rabbit hole goes. I can't thank you enough, Patrick. That was a really incredible experience, and I plan to keep building on it. I really loved the culture of the company too and how nice all the teachers were.
We contracted Marcus Engineering to help us bring a new optical surface metrology to market. The engineers and technicians at Marcus were key partners in designing the electronics and taking over small run production of our complicated system. They were very responsive to our every need.
We had a need for something that has never been done. A unique and complex system to test our products physical, electrical and thermal capabilities. Marcus Engineering understood our requirements, worked closely with us on the details, and designed and built an efficient and robust manufacturing test device to meet our needs. Robust because it has the hardware and software design that is ruggedized and maintainable in a manufacturing environment. Efficient because it quickly establishes the quality of the tested product, identifies issues and directs the appropriate rework. Marcus Engineering is a great partner to have on our team.

Valuable hands-on learning experience: My first internship experience with John Deere was the most impactful. It was my first opportunity to get industry experience, so I learned a ton! Being a member of the Cloud Security team was amazing at helping bring me up to speed on technologies, standards and how development in the industry works. The experience has given me a great baseline for comparison when exploring other job opportunities.
Plans for after graduation: I will go down to Jacksonville, Fla., with the Navigators for a summer training program to grow in my faith through discipleship and evangelism. After that, I will search for a full-time software engineering position around the Twin Cities for software application development.

ABSTRACT:
The talk will be a short discussion of the personal path of Dr. Marcus from Engineer to Entrepreneur with a specific focus on issues and challenges faced by researchers, faculty and those with engineering and scientific mindsets when translating designs, ideas, and focus from a design mentality to a business venture. This will be an interactive discussion leaving at least half of the time for discussion and conversations related to the move from ideas to application.
