Dear YKUC Friends (and especially kids!)
Our Worship and Christian Development Team has been working hard to re-think programming for children at Yellowknife United Church. We strive to include people of all ages in every aspect of our congregational life. In particular, it is a central value of YKUC that children are welcome in worship, and it is our goal to intentionally engage them on Sunday mornings.
Recognizing that our small congregation lacks the resources to sustain a formal Sunday School program, and remaining sensitive to the need to prevent volunteer burnout, we are delighted to introduce the Word & Wonder Program.
There are three anchors to the program:
On the second Sunday of each month (February 8, March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14), we will have a Word & Wonder service that is intentionally designed to be inclusive of children. On W&W Sundays, there isn’t a sermon. The service uses storytelling, hands-on activities, crafts, and simple liturgy that is suitable for every age.
Every Sunday, Word & Wonder kits are available for children to pick up AFTER the all-ages time. They contain a theme-specific children's bulletin, snack, and a variety of tools for kids to work with (at their seats or with their families at the back of the sanctuary) while the worship service is going on. Each Sunday, we will ask for a W&W volunteer who will arrive early to church to assemble the kits for that day.
The Sunday School room is always open for running off energy. Each Sunday, we ask for a W&W volunteer who can be on “standby.” If there is a large group of kids, or if things are getting a little too distracting in the worship space, we ask the volunteer to invite kids to bring their W&W kits along to the nursery to work with them there.
The Word and Wonder (W&W) activity will be added to the Weekly Helper's chart; the weekly handout is located in the church office, and supplies (and instructions) are kept in a large plastic bin in the Supply Room opposite the office.
Remember, wiggles are welcome! We believe that children learn what worship is all about by experiencing worship with us.

See you tomorrow for Word & Wonder!
