Dear YKUC Friends:

Hello from Ontario! It's good to be in my southern home, and to have a cat warming my lap as I type. Like many of you, my attention this week has been fixed on BC and the terrible news coming out of Tumbler Ridge. It's hard to find any words in the face of such a tragedy. Please take care of yourselves and one another as you pray and mourn alongside our country this week. The United Church of Canada has released a statement that I found helpful, and I'm sharing it with you at the link below:

You've already been well advised of our double congregational meetings this coming Sunday, February 15th, after church. During worship, we are going to have some elements of Ash Wednesday -- an "Ash Sunday" service, if you will. I'll be with you virtually, reflecting on public acts of piety and prayer, the importance of the ashes, and how that plays out in our world today. Of course, we will be praying for BC as well.

I'm writing to let you know of a few special programs, events, and practices that are coming up as we move into the season of Lent. The Pancake Supper (Tuesday, February 17th) is always our clue that a shift in tone is upon us. Here's what's happening over the next few weeks:

Evening Prayers - every night in Lent (except Sundays) at 8pm MT, Starting Wednesday February 18th
Wherever you are, you are invited to pause every night at 8pm MST for 5 minutes of prayer together on Zoom. This is a prayer practice for the 40 days of Lent. The link will be shared a few times, but here it is:

Wednesdays at 7pm Starting Feb 25th - Let's Talk About Hard Things
Anna Sale is the host of a great podcast called Death, Sex and Money. Her book, Let's Talk About Hard Things will form the basis of a 5-week Lenten Study Series about the importance of having difficult conversations. It's helpful to read the book, but not a requirement to participate. You can order it through Yellowknife Books, the library has a copy or two, or any of the usual online retailers. If you can't get the book, Anna's podcast will give you a good idea of the content. Here are the 5 conversations:

February 25th - Death
March 4th - Sex
March 11th - Money
March 18th - Family
March 25th - Identity

Wednesdays at Noon - Lenten Lunches at Holy Trinity Anglican Church
The Yellowknife Ministerial has hosted Wednesday lunches during Lent for many years. Everyone in town is welcome for a soup lunch and short devotional by one of our local clergy. YKUC will take our turn providing lunch and devotion on Wednesday, April 1st, the final Wednesday during Lent. More details to come about that, but for now, please feel welcome for Lunch starting on Ash Wednesday, February 18th.

Saturday, March 7th - Lenten Labyrinth
Walking the labyrinth is a solstice tradition in this congregation, an important spiritual practice rich in meaning for many of us. Please circle March 7th on your calendar as the labyrinth will be available in the auditorium from 2pm onwards.

Lent is "only" a 40-day journey, but it is always a time rich in prayer, reflection, and study. I hope you can join us for whichever activities will work for you. If you find yourselves far away from Yellowknife these days, please join us virtually! We'd love to see you.

Happy Friday the 13th (for those who observe) and Valentine's Day (for those who observe) and we'll see each other on Sunday.

Alison
