May 9: Garage Sale
Early Reminder: This is a heads up that the church will be holding its
annual garage sale on May 9. We will be looking for clean, gently used
items in good condition, in working order, and which people will be
interested in being and of course volunteers to work at the sale.
★ Invitation: National Moosehide Campaign against violence, 14 May
Canada is in the midst of an ongoing national crisis of violence against
Indigenous women, girls, and 2S-LGBTQIA+ people. The Moosehide Campaign
is a call to all people in Canada to take a stand against racism and for
justice. This year we are hoping for a record United Church turn-out at
the virtual events, local walks to end violence, and fasts to end
violence. See all information about the national campaign at
https://moosehidecampaign.ca.
National events include a sunrise ceremony, educational plenary, and
workshops (all available via livestream). You can register for virtual
events (including livestream links to all the national campaign day
events). Local marches are being organized across the country.
2026 Annual Meeting NWT Community Services Corporation
The N.W.T. Community Services Corporation is a not-for-profit body
established to manage and operate Northern United Place on behalf of its
members.
Each person who is a resident of Yellowknife and on the Historical Roll
of the Yellowknife United Church is a member of the N.W.T. Community
Services Corporation. The Board for the Corporation is made up of 6
Yellowknife United Church members and 3 members from the Yellowknife
community.
Northern United Place provides affordable housing primarily for seniors,
single persons, newcomers, and persons with disabilities. It provides
classroom space for Aurora College Yellowknife Campus and their student
residence. NUP also provides working and recreational space for various
non-profit and community organizations and a place for religious worship
and church activities in the multi-purpose auditorium and the Chapel.
The Annual General Meeting of the members of the Corporation will take
place:
SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2026
Northern United Place Auditorium
Following the Yellowknife United Church service
A package of material to be discussed at the AGM has been mailed to all
members.
At this meeting the primary business will include:
• A review and approval of the 2025 Audited Financial Statements
• An outline of significant activities, priorities, and challenges of
the Corporation for 2025
• The election of three Board members
For those members who are unable to attend in person, proxy forms are
available so you can designate a member to act on your behalf.
Book Club – Our next meeting is Sunday, May 3 when we will discuss The
Rebel Christ by Michael Coren. Christianity’s founder is often
misunderstood and misinterpreted. This book presents the real Jesus: a
rebel, a radical, and a revolutionary. Copies are available at the
public library, on Hoopla, and for purchase at in-person and on-line
bookstores. We will meet at 12:15 in Room 215, all are welcome.
Blue Bins - Thank you to everyone who stepped up to do the bins in April
and May. We are also booking ahead for the months of June, July and
August. This is an important fundraiser for our church and many hands
make light work. If you have students that require community service
hours, this does count and we are happy to sign the required paperwork.
If you would like to help but maybe don’t have a vehicle, that’s ok! We
have people with vehicles who could use an extra pair of hands.
If you are able to help, please contact Marg (
ma...@theedge.ca,
867-444-8362).
Note from Stewardship: At our congregational meeting in February, a
budget of was approved which included $65,000 for local offering,
$18,000 for Mission and Service, and $1,000 for capital for a total of
$93,000 in offering revenue. To meet this budget we will need $7762 per
month. Actual givings to the end of March were $19,346 which averages
out to $6,449. Thank you for you ongoing support.
Mission and Service Story: Anchored in Every Season
In Tobermory, Ontario, the town pulses with the seasons. Summer brings
busy roads, kayaks on the harbour, and lively streets. Winter brings
quiet and long stretches of stillness. Through it all, Tobermory United
Church remains a steady, welcoming presence at the northern edge of the
Bruce Peninsula.
The building is more than a church. It hosts drumming circles, Tai Chi,
bridge games, and poetry gatherings. Worship is shared with St. Thomas
the Apostle Mission. Outside, the annual thrift shop turns donations
into care, offering affordable items to the community and giving freely
to those in need. Hospitality here is intentional, welcoming 2S and
LGBTQ+ people with courage and care. Even the building reflects this
spirit, with cedar-lined walls and clear windows framing the surrounding
forest.
Through Mission and Service, Tobermory United Church is connected to a
wider movement of faith, creativity, and resilience.
We can keep this welcome strong. When we give to Mission and Service, we
help ensure that churches like Tobermory stay open, connected, and full
of care for everyone. Give today and be part of sustaining this vital
community.
