As a consequence, a human's greatest happiness must lie in
contemplation: The Gods enjoy a life blessed in its entirety; men
enjoy it to the extent that they attain something resembling the
divine activity; but none of the other beings can be happy, because
they have no share at all in contemplation, or study. So happiness is
coextensive with study, and the greater the opportunity for studying,
the greater the happiness, not as an incidental effect, but as
inherent in contemplation. (Aristotle 1178b25-31)

I would address one general admonition to all, that they consider what
are the true ends of knowledge, and that they seek it not either for
pleasure of the mind, or for contention, or for superiority to others,
or for profit, or for fame, or power, or any of these inferior things,
but for the benefit and use of life; and that they perfect and govern
it in charity. For it-was from lust of power that the Angels fell,
from lust of knowledge that man fell, but of charity there can be no
excess, neither did angel or man come in danger by it.

Urging mathematicians to study nature and natural philosophers to
study mathematics, he argued that if both groups do as he proposes:
the former shall not entirely spend their time in speculations of no
value to human life, nor shall the latter while working assiduously
with an absurd method, perpetually fail to reach their goal. But truly
with the help of philosophical geometers and of geometrical
philosophers, instead of the conjectures and probabilities that are
blazoned about everywhere, we shall finally achieve a natural science
supported by the greatest evidence.
