The National Wildlife Federation is seeking a Safeguards Intern to support NWF’s Climate Change Safeguards team (
www.nwf.org/climate-smart), which focuses on climate change adaptation as it relates to wildlife conservation. Major team initiatives include advancing climate-smart approaches for conservation with local, state and federal agencies as well as other conservation organizations. The intern will play a key role supporting the Climate-Smart Communities program, which focuses on promoting nature-based approaches to protect people and wildlife from the impacts of climate change. The Safeguards team also is involved in policy and legislative work on issues such as State Wildlife Action Plans, endangered species, invasive species, urban conservation, land protection and management, and conservation funding. The position will start February 2013.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Research, writing, blogging, and editing reports, newsletters, factsheets, and memos on wildlife, climate change, and natural resource conservation.
• Legislative and policy work at the federal, state and local levels including tracking bills and administrative regulations/rulemakings, distributing information to decision-makers in hard copy and e-mail, maintaining target database and policy information and occasionally attending lobby meetings.
• Coalition building with partners, including attending coalition meetings, engaging NWF affiliates and partners, helping with lobby days and trainings, calling activists and like-minded organizations.
• Logistical support in organizing meetings and other events, including arranging travel, taking minutes, updating website, and distributing notes and other materials.
• Administrative duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
• Bachelors degree or experience in natural resource management, conservation biology, or environmental policy/advocacy; interest in policy and legislative affairs desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
• Facility reviewing technical policy and/or scientific documents.
• Website Updating preferred.
SKILLS:
• Computer literacy a must (MS Office suite and internet applications).
• Ability to conduct independent research.
• Good expository writing skills.
• Excellent phone and interpersonal skills.
