Hi all,

I am starting a grad program in the fall and plan on getting a new (to me) laptop. The requirement is "Students are required to own a laptop or desktop computer that can run ESRI Geographic Information System (ARC-GIS) software." Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

After researching laptops a long time, I concluded that Apple is worth the price premium, given hardware quality and their M chips' battery life and performance. We just got a base model M4 Macbook Pro 14 with the hope of keeping it for a decade. If Apple is an option for you, and you are on a budget, a Macbook Air would be a great laptop. If you have to get Windows or strongly prefer it, Wirecutter and The Verge have good buying guides. But the thing that led me to Apple, even though I had only ever used an iPad before, is that with Windows there are always little questions about reliability and some kind of compromise: The keyboard, the webcam, the speakers, etc.

I would not usually reply all but I put a lot of effort into my search and hope others will find this helpful!

(Side note, if you are interested in missing middle financing, please email me; my friend and I have been working on something to close that gap.)

Cheers all, have a great week!

I was in grad school a while ago now, but I had a MacBook and then had to partition it to run windows & use GIS. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102622

Now I have an HP ZBook that can handle GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and MS office programs. Downside is that it's expensive and weighs a lot so it's a pain for travel.

Good luck and enjoy school!

Even though I've had several Mac laptops over the years, I would probably avoid getting in this case since ESRI software doesn't usually play nice with them (that might have changed recently but that is historically how it's been). You can also get a lot more bang for your buck if you go with a Windows machine.
