Hi DC YIPPS - This is an important and urgent moment to speak in support of a bill to raise min required auto insurance limits for the first time since 1986. If you’re in a position to take an action on this, we hope you will. Thank you.

Hi DC Families for Safe Streets members and allies,

We have an important and time-sensitive opportunity to push forward legislation that would modernize insurance minimums in DC.

In short: we need your voices to call and email Councilmember McDuffie and tell him why you support this bill. You can find scripts here and a sign-up list here

The factsMotor Vehicle Insurance Modernization Act (B26-0057) is a bill pending before the DC Council Committee on Business and Economic Development (chaired by Councilmember McDuffie). A public hearing was held in December 2024 and the next step is for the Committee to hold a vote and refer the bill to the full Council for two votes.

The bill: increases the mandatory minimum automobile insurance limits to $50,000/$100,000/$20,000. FYI, the current $25K/$50K limits were set in 1986.

You can read more about this advocacy and the work of DC-FSS members and our partners here. We circulated a petition on this back in May--thank you if you have already signed!

You can also read the op-ed by DC-FSS member Sam Trumbull here. This includes an explanation of the current and proposed insurance limits--information we wish we personally didn't need to know.

We hope you will take a moment to make a call or send an email, and forward this ask to your friends and networks.

With appreciation,
Jessica Hart
DC-FSS Steering Committee Member
