Cities frequently claim that there’s little they can do to address housing affordability. But look inside and look up, especially in multi-family housing. City requirements for stairs and elevators have a lot to do with whether its economical to build “up.” Most cities require two separate exit stairways for every unit in a building, a requirement that invariably results in much of a building’s area being dedicate to long, sterile, boring–and expensive. Buildings with just a single stairway can be much more flexible, interesting, varied and better ventilated–and are still safe. Thanks to Mike
