The Urbanist

KEYWORD SCORE: 34.67. comprehensive plan, density, development, growth, house, housing, income, infill, preservation, project, rent, urban, zoning

A long simmering fight over the environmental review behind Seattle’s long-range growth plan entered a new phase last week, with a number of local environmental conservation groups joining a push to press an appeal intended to force the City back to the drawing board. The appeal in question dates from last winter, one of six that were filed against the environmental impact statement (EIS) conducted on Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell’s “One Seattle Plan.” The updated Comprehensive Plan spells out which areas will see additional housing density as the Emerald City prepares to accommodate at least 11

A Victory for Housing: NIMBYs in Pacifica Can’t Fight Homes with Tax Dollars

YIMBY Law

KEYWORD SCORE: 31.09. development, housing, nimby, planning commission, project, rent, urban, yimby

A ruling at the tail end of 2025 brought with it a rebuke of the few things NIMBYs hold dear: their money and their anti-housing philosophy. In 2020, the small coastal city of Pacifica, California approved eight units of housing, and opponents spent five years fighting to kill the projects. They lost, but they didn’t stop there: the next step was to charge the city $1.2 million in legal fees on the basis that stalling new housing was a service to the public. Thanks in part to YIMBY Law, they lost that argument, too, and will not be rewarded for their years-long effort to block new homes. To mo

It would also be protected end to end, a first for Bremerton. But in a last-minute memo, the City announced plans to remove 52% of plastic flex posts between downtown and the Charleston District, which excludes the part of the pr

(Photo by Adam Gray / AP Photo) Since taking office, the Trump administration has made it clear that going after immigrants is one of its top priorities. In addition to ICE setting a record high of 32 people dying while in its custody last year, at least three more U.S. citizens have been killed by ICE agents this month. Over the weekend, as thousands gathered for a general strike in subzero temperatures to protest ICE presence, federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti. Just wee

Washington Legislature Grapples with Slew of Bills Regulating AI

The Urbanist

KEYWORD SCORE: 19.17. development, house, housing, rent, urban

As generative artificial intelligence (AI) continues to dominate the global technology scene, driven by the hype and investments from big tech companies, Washington state lawmakers are moving to regulate the increasing use of AI in our daily lives. With at least 14 bills in play this legislative session that pertain to AI, the focus on regulating this technology is as strong as it’s ever been. Jon Pincus, the founder of Nexus of Privacy, said legislators are grappling with the implications of AI all over the country. “AI is moving really fast, and no matter what you think of it, it’s really ch
