KRCC News sent detailed surveys about some of the most critical issues facing city leaders to the candidates running for Pueblo City Council. Here’s how District 1 candidate Dianne Danti responded, in her own words. What is your elevator pitch for why you are running, and why someone should vote for you? I’m running because Pueblo deserves leadership that listens, collaborates, and delivers real results. I attend City Council meetings every week and have seen too much division and not enough accountability, and I want to change that. My priorities are transparency, responsible spending, and pr

In Brief: Mobile, Ala., Mayor Sandy Stimpson is retiring after 12 years in office. He’s overseen improvements to the city’s credit ratings and an annexation of neighboring areas. The city recently celebrated the return of Amtrak passenger service to New Orleans and a deepening of a channel serving the Port of Mobile. Sandy Stimpson worked in the south Alabama lumber industry for nearly four decades, including as an executive and chief financial officer, before becoming mayor of his hometown of Mobile at the age of 61. Twelve years later — after deciding against running for a fourth term — he’s

KRCC News sent detailed surveys about some of the most critical issues facing city leaders to the candidates running for Pueblo City Council. Here’s how candidates responded, in their own words. What is your elevator pitch for why you are running, and why someone should vote for you? I’m not running to play politics — I’m running to shake things up. I’m a small business owner from the East Side who’s seen how our city forgets the little guys while the big ones get all the breaks. Pueblo needs someone who’s not afraid to speak up, question the system, and fight for real change. I believe in us

In a Friday campaign event, Seattle mayoral candidate Katie Wilson harkened back to her younger street-musician days when she used to busk at Pike Place Market. Wilson told a gathering of Market workers and community members that she understood their struggles; she has lived them, and Seattle’s mayoral frontrunner told them she is fighting for the little guy. Emily Pike, who works at a bookstore in the market and helped organize the event, said Wilson’s story resonates with them, and connects with the spirit of Pike Place Market, a tight-knit community of laborers, independent local merchants,

Bruce Harrell has a new line on the campaign trail, establishing himself as a champion of multimodal transportation and touting success reducing traffic fatalities in Seattle. But the lofty rhetoric, employed at several recent candidate forums in Fremont and Bitter Lake, obscures the full picture on the ground, with Harrell cherry-picking outdated data points to make his case. Transportation has been far from one of the most prominent issues over the past few months, as Harrell finds himself in the fight of his political life against Transit Riders Union founder Katie Wilson, who beat Harrell

Apartment rents in Denver are dropping more than the official data suggests, according to a new report from the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. The average rent in Metro Denver fell 5% in a year to $1,816 at the end of the third quarter. It’s also down from the second quarter’s $1,832 monthly rent. But those are reported rents, Mark Williams, AAMD’s executive vice president, said Tuesday during a news conference. Landlords have been offering more concessions than ever before, mainly discounts. Add in such concessions, and you get what’s called the “effective rent.” “If you go back just
