Thoughts about the responsibilities of governments?

As Simon said (I'm largely paraphrasing him here), its only when we the people gently and knowingly let our politicians and governments know that the times are changing, that we are moving into a closer, more connected and well knit fabric of society, that we can hope to see them change.
